Hey everyone! A couple of links I forgot to provide: YUMBLtv's Workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2427110846 MaxFC's Workshop: steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198030726872/myworkshopfiles/?appid=255710 City Tips Submission Form: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSea3CFTTT_LWSwDWTT9gnFaSbbJubPNzL8nkGL3QEXlH26XmQ/viewform And I see the comments about CWC and wanted to let you know it's coming soon! We're going to Robert Moses a bit.... for better or worse.... ***STORY*** Founded in the mid-1800s New Yoke started as a rural town surrounding what was lovingly known as Hard Rock. One of the founding companies in the area was Hemlock Logging Co. Immediately spurring on suburban growth. Catching the eye of Luna Marie, a recently widowed heiress who was buying up land for development and industry; and with the surrounding access to water and a booming town, the purchase was easy for her. Luna set about establishing the first farmland and park on Lunesta Shores. Luna Marie became one of the founding members of the newly formed council for the town of New Yoke. With the access to the highway being one of the main throughways for new residents, the council agreed to open a new ferry route to bring more immigration into the city. Foreign Oil Mogul Robert Stark began assessing the land for possible oil pumps near the city. Finding small traces on the mountain he approached the council to purchase the site. The council granted permission with the promise that Stark would develop a small neighborhood for new workers and fund the growing windmill farms around the city. Once oil, farm, and forestry demanded rail access, a big city goal was to have multiple train stops built for each. Upon the completion of the rail, Either Ore Mining Co. purchased half of the western mountain range and built one of their largest quarries. Spurring the development of a warehouse/factory district and Meadow Harbor. Coinciding with the death of Luna Marie. In Luna Marie’s will she gifted one of the largest pieces of land, and what is considered the main area of New Yoke today. She designated large portions for public use, including a master plan for a university, grand park, and zoo. It would be many more years before other investors became interested in these projects. Seṅor Belmont was a developer and an urban architect who saw Luna’s rough layout for the university and began blueprinting the space - taking most of the southside of the land along the river. Meanwhile, Justin Applegate saw the declining Luna Farms and purchased large swathes of land North West of Luna’s initial purchase - creating a large orchard minutes from the city's limits. Belmont, now desperate for financing, went to the city council and presented his plan, the city was eager to begin construction and approached Applegate. They granted Applegate township rights to the south of the city far past city limits in exchange for financing. Stark, now very old, wanted his own town too - and proposed to finance the grand park in exchange for another large development plot to the south on the ocean shores, where he had explored a large oil facility years earlier. Upon the completion of Gaia University, Applegate announced plans to build the Applegate Animal World Zoo fulfilling Luna’s will. The city began selling off portions of land to developers around the university, zoo and park. A banker saw an opportunity to create one of the largest stock exchanges in the world and presented plans to the city. An uproar from Applegate, as most of his orchards would be demolished to build the financial districts. The city appealed to Applegate by allowing him to build two cargo airports near his farms. Hemlock Logging Co declared bankruptcy as it began to sell off land to settle debts. Heather Handson purchased the forest range immediately north of New Yoke and presented plans to open a large logging site with factories. The city was thrilled to begin exporting wood again. The city continues to grow as more and more tech and tourism floods the area. The most recent builds are the launch site in the religious community in the mountains called Mars Town (they believe we are all Martians trying to get home to Mars). And Button Boardwalk, the great niece of Luna Marie, built the boardwalk after spending many summers on Lunesta Shores wishing there was something cooler to do. The city is now awaiting budgetary balance and traffic resolutions before embarking on their next plans, an international airport and a national park.

Robert Mosesing? As a New Yorker, I'm not entirely sure that's ever for the better...technically he did do some stuff that worked out really well, but largely at the expense of poor black people, so...

City Tips is a great series. It's also not something other content creators do the way you do it. There's a tip Captain Ahvious says that applies here. Don't build up to your tile borders in straight, parallel lines. When you zoom out, it stands out a mile. Change road and rail directions, fade out your density, simplify the landscaping, anything to make it less obvious that the game told you you had to stop on that line.
@RobertDoornbosF1

I always make sure the roads are at some sort of angle compared to the border, and then make a road along the border, breaks the grid and looks like a historical road

Healthcare budget tip: No matter the city size, I only use hospitals and medical clinics for aesthetic/build purposes. That's because I am mindful to keep noise and industry pollution absent from my entire city. I do, however, use Elder Lodges and Child Care Centres because, respectively, they prevent pop crashes and boost birthrates. Both buildings also provide enoiugh 'health benefit' to the area of effect to make medical centres and hospitals redundant. Following this guide keeps the health budget very lean!

This is a really pretty build. I absolutely love the boardwalk amusement park across the water from the university. Stunning layout. Even with the nitpicky flaws, the city tour at the end was simply incredible. Very scenic views from all angles. So impressive.

Watching something like this makes me ponder what sort of things you might have to say about my builds. At the very least, watching this has reemphasized that I really need try to incorporate aesthetics and character into my cities rather than working only within the framework of seeking efficiency and maximizing the logistics of the game systems. I know I have a hard time breaking away from a purely grid layout.

I imagine this type of video takes a bit of time to put together and will only be released occasionally. I think part of the problem for Winston Avenue is that it's missing what looks like it would be a really in-demand connection - when you're checking the traffic routes you can see a lot of cars taking that two-lane road just to get onto the arterial (at 12:14, the top-most two-lane road is carrying a lot of through trips for the district). The arterial at the top of the screen at 12:14 doesn't actually directly connect to Winston Avenue - it has to turn onto the local streets first. Connecting the arterial to Winston where it makes that 90 degree turn one street down from the cemetery would streamline the through traffic. Of course... that's all banking on the fact that Winston is fully functional through its entire course, too.

A word on real world gradients. Desired maximum gradient for normal roads is 6%, for roads of 8% or more, escape (run off) roads are needed. and 10% is considered impassible for most vehicles. Desired max for Pedestrians is 5%, and for wheelchairs 2.5%. Desired maximums for Rail are 0.6% in normal terrain, 1% in hilly terrain, with maximum peak gradients on mainlines of 2.5%, and 3.3% on branch lines carrying light traffic only. Achieving these in the game requires some thought and some space, but does make maps look much more realistic, and operate better. With more space, transport operates better too. Just thought some of you might find that interesting.

I think your numbers are a little low. My office backs onto a street at a ridiculous 25% - and while it's a one-way street (down only), I have seen vehicles make it up the hill, so 10% certainly isn't impassable. It was certainly fun when a new apartment block was built on it, watching them trying to manoeuvre big mobile cranes into place. It's less fun walking up it, something I do daily (if only partway). The steepest street in the world is also in NZ - Baldwin St in Dunedin, at a truly unreasonably 35%.

My two cents, Phil. I dislike that there's a Map category. I think that any skilled builder could take any map and make a wonderful city. It wouldn't be an ideal city with all features available, but it would be its own thing. If you want to have a map category and feature whether you think it works for the builder's skill level or not count that score against the overall, I think that would be fair.
