I've always liked the look of the GG1, though I could never it when I was a kid. I do have a K-Line semi scale that's never been run and I wouldn't be able to build a layout now and can't afford to have one built. That Williams model is quite impressive for its size and I'm glad that it works pretty well. Fairly good sound in the bell and horn, too. Looking forward to seeing the improvements you make (if any) to this beast.

Nice show and tell. I had one like yours but a different color. I was disappointed with my head light and markers. So I bought a strip of LED lights. You can cut at every three lights and solder wire to the old light socket. Because I put the LED right up the plastic lens of the head light, it made the head light brighter. Also the marker lights as well. Hope this is helpful. JH

I once accidentally bought a car from eBay throwing a ridiculously low bid and nobody else bid on it. As a matter of fact I had to drive from Kentucky to Pennsylvania to get it lol. Very nice purchase! You can’t hardly go wrong with Williams!

Nice ! I have a K-line GG1 like yours and a 1948 2332 as well. The 2332 is Brunswick green but the gold bands and numbers are both faded away with age and the K line is Tuscan red. I love them both but I would like a scale one too at some point. Congratulations and enjoy!

I got a Williams GG-1 last winter at a train show that might be described as an accidental purchase too. It wasn’t something I was looking for, but the price was just so low that I couldn’t pass it up! A tuscan 5 stripe version. Interestingly, mine also had the shell on backwards too.

@wayneantoniazzi2706 Ай бұрын
For an accidental purchase you did just fine Dave! A suggestion, instead of flipping the shell have you tried turning the engine around on the track? I noticed the engine sequence being "reverse-neutral-forward-neutral" when if it's a typical Williams product it should be the opposite. Considering it's a GG1 with one end pretty much the same as the other I have to wonder if a turnaround might be an easy way out? Personally I like a reverse first set-up on my engines if it's do-able, starting in reverse takes up the coupler slack and makes for an easier forward roll. As far as the wheel slip try adding some ballast to the engine if you can, but I'm sure you've thought of that already. And you're not the first to be surprised (If not shocked!) by the size difference between a traditional GG1 and the scale version! Yeah, the bell and horn are typical vintage Williams but you can upgrade later if you choose. Anyway, that's a nice addition to your fleet! Oh, I got my "Dagryffyn Hobby" T-shirt a few days ago. Love it! And it's Gildan folks, top quality! Thanks for posting!

I don't have an impulse issue for William's engines no longer.... While some look great, and I do own a set of FM Trainmasters(w/TMCC&sound/smoke), the fact that they always come with a Hidden Fee of $300+ for an ERR CC and sound board reminds me to keep shopping. lol

Ha, Dave. I bet eBay doesn't consider it an accidental purchase. Nice..., that's quite an impressive looking model. Once, it's had a complete servicing and broke in. I'm confident it'll run much better. I completely break down and pull the motors on every model I buy and clean out all the old grease and put in new for some peace of mind. Because I rarely see instructions, I read the set I got from an engine I received the other day. I don't recall the manufacturer, but It explained that the engine required servicing before running it the first time because they are purposely shipped without adequate lubrication to prevent damage to the finished plastics and paint. I guess this explains some complaints I've seen, especially with Motorcraze, who's been trash-talking Lionels quality control lately as to one of the reasons he no longer buys Lionel trains. While I have the motors out, it gives me a chance to inspect and tighten the motor mount screws on the bottom of the can motors. Even the slightest play can adversely affect smooth running and damage the worm gears. The Williams engines are an ideal candidate to upgrade with controls and sounds. Third Rail is the source for the ERR boards for both the cruise commanders and Railsounds. They have a Railsounds board for the GG1. You can go to their site and listen to the different Railsounds boards they have. They have at least a half dozen different steam boards, and at least that many diesel boards and the electric and gas engine boards. I replaced the Signal Sounds board in my K-line Big Boy with their Articulated Steam railsounds board. I think the control boards are $150, while the sound boards run $129. I think Nick likes using the MTH boards and claims that he gets controls and sounds for $200. Blunami is another option worth looking into, and I think it's around $200. It looks fairly easy to install and has at least 200 sound files to choose from. You'll need a bridge rectifier with capacitor in addition to the Blunami board. Sid with Sids Trains has a how-to video on the installation.

We both use menards track and have a lot of Williams. I run Williams shorty cast shell gg1s with MTH 60’ and less 15” or k line 15”shorty passenger cars with them. If you’ve got all those 70’+ passenger cars obviously you need a scale gg1 to go with. But is the new layout going to have o72-o96 curves to run that stuff? I have one outer mainline of o72 and 2 lines of o54 and 1 inner or o42 loop. The shorty stuff like what you originally had works well and looks good on it all. If you’re moving towards more scale you might want min o72 on mainline ?

Almost $200 I’m sorry I can’t lie, and you ask for comments…………that was a waste of money. The little model looks better, this new acquisition is to long and overhangs terribly.😊😊 what is an accidental purchase? Money burns a hole in your pocket and runs away to somebody that just happens to have something in exchange.😊😊
