Hey great videos , you are one of the only good s4 channels I’ve had about 10 a4s and just got a b8 s4 , I bought it with trans problems and babied it home, then I saw the next morning that it was leaking trans fluid from the cooler in front…. Thankfully the coolant didn’t mix and I replaced the whole radiator/cooler, then I checked the trans fluid…..empty… lol I pumped about 5 quarts in it and went for a drive, it drives great now! Holds power everything is great, only thing is I get that weird shutter/noise in reverse and going from 1st to second, it feels awful in drive mode but feels great in manual mode. I cleared the codes before test driving it but the old codes might be telling of the issue so not sure yet I’m waiting to see if anything comes up but ive driven about 3 hours and no codes yet. i do have a sport diff malfunction light on the dash but not sure what thats about either yet, the dif itself doesnt look too pretty but im wondering if thats giving those shutters and shit, its only really in reverse or drive. also you have to remember my car was running on very little to no dsg fluid … but the clutches feel great now and holds all the power… may just need to keep learning for itself, i made sure to drive very nice once it was fixed and it only keeps getting better.

I was getting the same harsh chatter noise or stutters in second at low rpm and also reverse. I tried to avoid reverse and drove the car in manual in the city to avoid it. One day I flipped it back in drive and it was gone and so was the chatter in reverse. Do not touch the transmission or mech unit until it gives you a code or actually leaves you stranded.

This is the problem! Fix , Flush all fluid replaced both filters, calibrated transmission! Do a gas pedal relearn first! And then calibration of the clutches! This problem happens because you take to long between fluid changes! Need to keep the magnets clean, or do a ton of local driving on hot weather! All DSG transmission hate low speed and slow shifting you are actually burning the clutch and or heating the fluid. When in local heavy traffic put the car on Sport mode or do your shifting manually! Remember these are not real automatics they are manual with a wet clutch

Thank you for sharing brother. my check engine light came on, and so I have to bring it to Audi for a diagnostic. I never had judder, shaky, or vibration with my car, but Audi says it's the pressure valve, and they need to replace the "Mechatronic Circuit Board" and you're right, it'll cost me an arm and a leg. I was too skeptical about it cause there were no signs of transmission malfunctions. So, I declined the service. I took my car back from Audi, and the check engine light is now "Off". I've been driving the car modestly, haven't try aggressive yet but the car runs smooth and flawless. I was thinking maybe I will try to do the same as you did to your car or just keep driving fairly for now. I'm afraid the engine light lits up again if I hit the redline. I'm running on a 034motorsport stg 2+ ECU, and stg 1 DSG. But anyways, if it does, I will try your remedy. Thanks!

Sadly this fix will not correct that issue. My mechatronic circuit board had already been replaced and I was still experiencing poor drivability. If yours has never been replaced, you will more than likely have to still replace it to 'kind of' fix the issue. It's a terrible part of owning these cars. There has been legal action in the States against Audi. You should get on Google and see if you qualify to be a part of it.

Bro I was just got on my b8.5 S4. I have an identical issue. I can't believe I managed to find such a specific video. I noticed the same thing where during hard acceleration there was no issue but only when you were lazy with the gas that the issue came through. I'm just hoping that transmission holds long enough for me to save the money to fix it. This is me after buying a used german car 🤡

You'll be happy to know that in the end, that's just the way the car drove. What I did improved the drivability, but it never had a single transmission issue for the remaining time I owned it. It worked just fine.

I have a 2010 S4 with 141,000km (86,000 miles) and have the lurching from 2nd to first in "D" but shifting manually to M1 in downshifts eliminates it and accelerating in M1 and then to "D" is smoother. This condition comes and goes so I'm 100% it's a software issue as mechanical issues don't fix themselves - they stay broken. My car is not driven much - but I will try the "training" that you recommended. I also let the car engage gear with an off brake coast a foot or 2 and then give it the gas - eliminates the lurching, shudder and bucking - otherwise looks like I'm driving a manual poorly. I read that DSG transmissions operate this way - need to coast on idle first. I also recently changed gas (91 RON) from Shell to Esso - I wonder if that caused the issue? I also heard a stage 2 tune upgrade will fix it.

This issue is why I got rid of my beloved 2013 S4. 034 Stage 1 tuned on 93 and their matching DSG tune proper service intervals on the DSG. Car was really great but 3 years of driving and this problem grew from occasional to reliable in the heat. I live in Buffalo so it’s usually cold but summer months after driving awhile it always would slam hard from 2-1. When cold and in cooler weather it rarely happened unless I drove 30+ minutes and hammered it. Summer one or two pulls and it was sure to slam down the gear change. Hated it. I loved the rest of the car, but at 100k and three good years I just moved on. I got my worth out of the car. RWD 2018 340i with the b58 and ZF8 replaced it. S4 was a little more handsome, and had a higher quality interior. I also miss the charger scream. But the ZF8 while being a torque converter just makes the DSG seem like a dinosaur. Shifts are imperceptibly slower in the ZF8 (when they’re both tuned) when hammering, and in comfort it blends away into the smoothest experience. None of the funky characteristics of the DSG. Also the B58 might not have the charger whine but the exhaust note replaces that. Over all the S4 was a bit more luxury and the 340i is more performance car. Both great cars but the ZF8 shows why the DSG has essentially been obsoleted. I do prefer the BMW for the driving dynamics/experience but I will always fondly remember the great alcantara seats and charger scream at 7400 (034 tune). The launches were insane also. Good car, probably one of the best tuning platforms of its era. The n54 of course was more insane for tuning but also was one of the least reliable platforms too. The ea837 is nearly as good with orders of magnitude more reliability. Good times.

You can always reset the gearbox by depressing the accelerator for 30 seconds with the ignition on (not engine). Then whilst keeping your foot on the accelerator remove the key and keep pressing the accelerator for another 30 seconds. After, remove your foot, don’t turn on the car for 2 minutes and then finally turn on the car and start driving like you normally would. It’ll relearn your driving profile and might get rid of the jerkiness of low gear/rpm, like it did for my a4 s line.

The transmission code is a DL501. The first generation was in 2010 - 2012 B8 S4's which were the worst. I would imagine an S5 with a 3.0L S/C V6 would have the exact same transmission. The B8.5's though which were 2013 to 2017's had the same transmission but they updated it slightly and saw fewer problems with them

Did you end up getting it fixed properly? I just saw a thread where a guy ran into same problem and Audi refused warranty due to modification, so he picked up the ECS Tuning Mechatronics Repair kit and did it himself. He actually wrote a quick DIY. No pictures or anything, just a numbered step by step. He claims it was easier than he thought, and only ended up costing him around $600 total. Not sure if that is USD, or CAD. I think it might of been Canadian, because he used celcius degrees, when talking about bringing his transmission up to temp.

I have a 2010 B8 S4 with a Mechatronix unit that was replaced by Pfaff Audi in Toronto (Mech....not circuit board) I'm having an issue in Cold weather. When I first start the car, for the first few shifts through the gears, its suuuper herky jerky and has even once dropped the gear and gave me a warning light for gearbox malfunction and no reverse gear. This only happens in sub zero cold weather. After a couple of really light accelerations through the gears, it smooths out and works perfectly. Anyone know if this is a common issue in cold weather, or could this be worn out clutches or circuit board issues. Im here asking because I don't trust mechanics in my area of Toronto.

@@VancityAudi Thanks for the reply. I actually have never had an issue with the reverse gear at all. That was the warning that came up when it dropped the forward gear that one time. Its confusing because the tranny shifts and works properly outside of those first couple of runs through the gears on a cold day. Some people say its common with DSG to have some jerkiness until the fluid flows through the clutches and warms up a little bit. Im in denial of it being a circuit board problem

They have the same issues... it’s been well documented. While some claim it doesn’t occur as often, that’s simply due to B8.5 generally being lower in miles... my B8 is at 144k miles... I’ve had no mech unit issues and I’ve owned it since 35k. Dsg services done every 10k miles myself. It’s been a great car.

Hi Adam, sounds like worn clutch packs. It is naive to think that you "fixed it". DSG adaptations performed with VCDS help for a little bit, but it will not solve your problem. The problem will return. Replacing the mechatronic will not help you IMO. Please get a professional diagnose the problem. Do not waste your money! By the way, I have the reverse gear problem that is solved by replacing the curcuit board. Mine is a B8.5.

I already did get Audi to do an inspection. They told me I would need to replace the transmission, lol. So ya, I've already proven that I won't need to replace anything for the foreseeable future. Down the road though I'm positive the problem will rear its ugly head again and I will have to replace the mech, the clutch packs or something mechanical inside the tranny. Until then I'm happy with my 90% fix seeing as I rarely feel the issue anymore and the car drives extremely well. Also I forgot to mention in the video, the very first thing I tried were a couple DSG adaptations via VCDS. It helped for less than a day, haha.

@@VancityAudi I agree that you will be able to drive for quite a long time before you will be forced to replace anything. I have not had that issue with the DL501 in my S4, but with the DSG in another VAG car (not sold in NA). I had the exact same symptoms-2nd gear judder creeping in traffic. I solved it in the same way-driving in 1st in manual mode. I drove like that for 2 years and about 35,000 km. I could have driven probably 2 more years, but I drive in a lot of city traffic, so got sick of it and replaced the clutch packs, which fixed the issue.

@@Thecarbonhero I have never had a reverse problem. As I explained in this and previous videos it was the previous owner that had to fix the mechatronic.

I don't understand how this fixed anything. Your just avoiding the rpm range where you have a problem. Why did you feel the need to make a video showing people how to avoid grinding in a rev range by just shifting around it. And yea when you accelerate faster the transmission shifts later which is why your missing that range when you do.

@@VancityAudi I shouldn’t have to watch the video so you can explain why your title isn’t true. You said multiple times throughout the video that you “accidentally” fixed it and it says it right in the title. You didn’t fix anything. The title of the video is a straight up lie regardless of how you manipulate and rationalize it. People who are looking for actual fixes to a common issue with the mech are going to be deceived into watching you ramble useless information. This video is pointless and misleading. If your not going to delete it at least change the title.

@@VancityAudi how can you not understand from my comments that I HAVE seen the video. My entire point is that you did not fix anything. How would I know that if I hadn’t seen the video?!?! Your mech issues are not better you are just avoiding them. They will get worse and you will have to fix it properly. Who taught you that not using something that’s broken means it’s fixed. Just because you don’t look at it doesn’t mean it’s not there.
