You were closer than you thought you were on the Hollywoodland one. The location was inaccurately placed. The actual location of the photo was approximately 3224 Ledgewood Drive. You can tell using the sign, that distinctive house (6182 West Mulholland Highway), and Google Maps 3D. This means you were actually only 165m out.

I think the year was incorrect too - that looks like a Ford Model A judging by the bumpers, and those weren't in production until 1927. The Guardian Angels were a vigilante community organization formed in 1979 to protect citizens against rampant subway crime in NYC. The West Village is currently one of the priciest areas of NYC but was dangerous in 1980. New Zealand completed its switch to metric in December 1976. The Hollywood sign was originally an advertisement put up by a real estate company to promote the sale of land they owned in the Hollywood hills. The surrounding area had been known as Hollywood for some time, but their specific development was called 'Hollywoodland'. The sign became derelict and was going to be torn down in the 40's. But by that point it was a famous landmark, so the city decided to repair and preserve it. But they chose not to spend money saving the 'land' part, because 'Hollywood' was the place's name, but 'Hollywoodland' was just a defunct real estate scheme by then. The whole thing had become dilapidated again by the 70's and had to be completely replaced with more durable, but slightly smaller letters.

Good idea You could also take the angle between the 2 signs and say that it is one angle of a triangle with the 2 cities and our location as the points. We can work out our location from that in a few ways. You could get a line around the world of all the points at the correct angle to those 2 cities; repeat for another pair of cities and see where those interect. My method would be for if you couldn't measure distance but could measure angles. Your method has a much much much lower margin of error. Maybe if you repeated my method for all the cities the errors would average out somewhat.

You can make it out easier in Japanese but the lines are Ginza (銀座線), Nanboku(南北線), Chiyoda (千代田線), and Marunouchi (丸ノ内線). If you can find those lines and where they all intersect you'll come across the station.
