Old school know how beats 'theoretical engine assembly' every time. My cousin graduated with a degree...an actual degree...in mechanical engineering and he worked on one motor. It was an electric motor for a boat for a project. But he can tell his dad, who owns a large European mechanics shop with 12 mechanics and technicians employed, all the things they do wrong. The kid has never worked on a car's engine ever, but that degree he feels gives him the authority of knowledge.

But he never picked up a Wrench His whole life. Now I listen to him talk about his dad's shop...the very shop that paid for him to go to school and get an education...how it's outdated and the men and women working there are uneducated and backwards. Hi Jared, i am surprised the machine shop didn't mention or look into splaying the 2 bolt, essentially making it a 4 bolt, but splaying tends to make them stronger, its very common in drag and circle track motors. I worry with all that work and money you spend, that the 2 bolt may not hold all the pressure you will be applying to it. Thank you for making enjoyable and informative content i always look foward to more episodes!

We had that conversation, but for the actual power output we decided we would be in the good side of things. Since the tires are spinning it’s lower stress than a drag motor

Man, that ring gapping is stressful to watch. I did my first set back in 2018 when I built my truck's 4.7. All my build experience prior was air cooled VWs where I bought pre-assembled jug & piston sets. I guess I got them right though. Over 17k miles on the built now.

You know I think push rod engines are fairly archaic. I've seen them 20 years ago still on the road here. But those where inline 4s. Basically every car here has ohc engines mostly dohc. But that's Germany. I guess they have their advances when used for torque. Not Rpms.

Did you check bearing clearances at all? One tip I also heard is to keep the assembly lube about 1/4" away from the edge of the main bearings. Then do not spin the crank until the caps are torqued. This helps prevent any assembly lube from getting behind the bearings, which might increase the chance of spinning the bearings.

The designation "HP" on the block is just a mold number, it has no significance other than to show which mold pieces Tonawanda used that day to cast it. If the block was a special HP piece it would have bowties all over it or say DART on it. Also, you should weigh the final engine before it goes in (probably too late) take some external measurements to compare with the VG30TT, you might just be surprised.

when building Engines, I like my pistons to end up being .10 down in the hole and a .39 Gasket. If the Block is Good you could just get a Eagle Crank Combo, pre-Balanced Crank, Rods, Pistons W/Rings & bearings, Ready to assemble, which saves Time at a machinist & that saves money. I never buy Custom Engine parts, if it breaks , it could be months for replacement. Your 2 bolt should be good to 6K RPM just my 2 cent's

It's a little disturbing how you talk about this car in the previous Z32 video. Those cars are beautiful, expensive, and hard to find now, so be careful and take pride in it. The Mark IV family is the most well developed internal combustion engine family in the world, and aluminum blocks can and should be had. Unfortunately prices have gone nuts due to the tariffs, but prior to that you could have gotten a conjoined bored aluminum block from Speedmaster for about $3500 ready to build. That's with billet steel main caps, and it'll support a 4.600" bore and a 4.250" stroke, which gives you 565ci, or 9.2L. It would weigh about 500lbs, which makes it no heavier than the TT VG that it came with. Add a TR6060 and get rid of the 4WS and the car could be AMAZING. No idea why the import guys can't understand 2v pushrod tech, it's MORE advanced than 4v OHC designs and came LATER. More displacement with LESS external area and weight. If you do more research you'll learn that this could be an amazing car that shouldn't be spun into a wall to amuse a bunch of tanagers. Please, for the love of god don't cut a hole in that beautiful hood.

don't try to fill the combustion chamber on the head with the Piston use a flat top piston and make the combustion chamber smaller the dome creates a damn for the flame front and then you should soften the head where the flat part of the Pistons going to come up close to it so it has a greater area or it not the supper from any suction when it changes direction which can rob you of a little horsepower if not done

Wow Jared you have MASSIVELY over specd the engine for a burnout car. I don't know what size and diameter tires you are going to use but all you need is a combo that at the very most {for crowd safety reasons} will pull 200 mph wheel speed. That will blitz tires in 30 ~ 40 seconds. Even if you go for 40" tall off road tires they will be gone in a minute. Set your MSD box soft limit to 6500 rpm and gear it accordingly. For many years the Aussie burnout champion car only used a Holden/Buick 3800 V6 and that was before time limits were imposed. The Important factor you have missed is if you plan to do multiple high speed doughnuts you should take a good look at the oil system to prevent starvation at high side G's.

I've spent like $22,000 on mine T^T. Well at least between the engine and transmission at least. The engine was probably +/- $19,000. Everything is brand new. Cast iron 7.0L all forged everything LS of course. I built it myself so I saved some money there. I finally drove it last week after about 2 years of slowly buying parts to put on it, drop it in the car, and iron out problems. The issue I have now Is stopping it. The brakes didn't work as expected so that's the next very important thing to fix. But it moves and drives. Also yes torquing down head bolts/studs is the most terrifying thing.

But one thing I would have definitely done, is to get the inner main caps changed for 4 bolt splayed caps instead of leaving it 2 bolt, thats cheap insurance for these blocks. I would have found a Tall Deck 427 so I could use the bigger stroke cranks and maybe a small base circle cam too.

What's the difference between 2 and 4 bolt main, like do they handle more power etc?
@TheQuestionableGarage
@TheQuestionableGarage Жыл бұрын
On the main caps, it refers to the number of bolts that hold the cap to the block. The 4 bolts tend to withstand rpm and torque better, as they will keep the block more square and resist bending and warping better

Hey Jared, just one question. Are you going to change the designation of your car to a 454ZX Nissan? Thanks for the great tutorial on building a ridiculously overpriced 2 bolt Chevy big block. It should be fine as long as you limit your revs. It should prove to be an incredible burnout or an incredible failure. I love your questionable choices. Thanks and we'll see you next time.

All you need to do is put together the 454 with all the stock parts and new pistons, sell it then buy a dart block for all those good parts

I have a question? Maybe that is for a while video of it own. On the timing chain why not use the dog bone over the chain.

This show should be called - Wrench 24/7 While Sleeping. Slowly disappearing - Art of custom internal combustion engine building. Derek’s great grand kids are going to be amazed - Pops you had to do all that ? That’s way too hard and complicated. Why didn’t you use High Out Put Electric Uranium Super Charged Turbo Ceramic Motor? It has 2500 horsepower and 10,000 Torque !

We had a cricket that took up residence in our en suite bathtub. Every time I would go after him, he would go down the drain. After 2 sleepless nights, I went full napalm on him. I used every chemical I had down the drain and into the overflow
