I was told this once, this may or may not be true: The reason why it only works in some stages, is that there is another object, somewhere in the level, that makes them usable.

It makes sense. Maybe there's a controller object in cherry levels that takes care of spawning the doubles, keeping track of the real Mario, maybe even controlling their "AI".

Double Cherries, a lucky incident during development made into an actual mechanic... it's a pleasure to see them in Bowser's Fury! The camera getting stuck when you lose a clone was particularly strange, didn't expect that at all. By the way, the ending was the best!

I feel like it’s more reasonable that the double clone limit is, instead of being set in a level-by-level basis, is just set in place for the levels that have double cherries, unless there is a 3D World level without them that lets you have more than one Mario. Either way, this implies that the double cherry was at least planned to be in Bowser’s Fury, since the game acts like it is a Double Cherry level with the normal Double Clone cap

Here's a suggestion add Fury Bowser to the background of the Super Mario 3D World levels to make them more crazier (i already suggested this to other modding channels as well)

The reason the camera freaks out after you lose a Mario is because to the game, Mario is recognize as, let's say "[1]Mario = Mario Entity" and when you multiply Mario, the game still recognizes all subsequent Mario a the same single entity. So when you subtract one of them, the game doesn't know how to interpret it and locks the camera as if he died, but keeps the clones alive. It's a wonder the game doesn't outright crash, but that's most likely due to having the same code of the Double Cherry game of origin. Speaking of the Double Cherry, the levels that let you pick them without crashing are the ones that originally have it, so the fact it works in Bowser's Fury means the value for the item has been modified on those levels to disable said transformation rather than the levels themselves being enabled for the use of the item in them exclusively. Otherwise that would meant they enabled the Cherry in Bowser's Fury just for shits and giggles.
