The friendship mechanic is really unique, i love it! I agree just gifting the same stuff over and over again is weird and boring, i really like this system!

I just wanted to say that, too. Great stuff, could you mail that idea to the Animal Crossing team? haha Seriously very creative idea on the friendship concept. And a surprisingly "simple" solution.

I love it too, hope it won't become an abusable feature like just using npcs when doing tasks, I think he could combat that by the NPCs taking the items that they get when with you, and maybe they will give you some of the items when you are friendly with them, that way it would only become rewarding after investing time in being with them but idk maybe it works even without that.

yeah, i like it too,, had an idea where the npc could check for free time on their schedule for an activity and maybe postponing some stuff depending on priorities but that may be too complex for the game

Sorry that mechanic is too fun for me not use the same idea in some form at some point years in the future. More games should have that kind of simplistic depth to their interactions.

I have to echo everyone else and say your NPC friendship mechanic is brilliant! Maybe in certain situations you could have multiple people follow you? For tough fights or maybe story set pieces? So many cool opportunities and such a unique idea! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

okay I have 2 suggestions. The first is some goblins hang out with eachother as part of their schedule and you can ask to join. They only do things both of them like so you can easily know what those 2 like to do and they will both follow you giving 2 npcs friendship. The second suggestion is another way to gain friendship, community theatre. You build an elevated platform (maybe you can upgrade to get masks and costumes) and you play a story with a goblin like movies in stardew. They have stories they like and characters they like to play. the audience may also get minimal friendship, seems a bit op, right? but there's a catch. every play has a battle where you avoid projectiles. if you don't dodge properly, the friendship point gain is decreased or maybe some is lost. also, the building can change npc base clothing to the costumes. maybe costumes are collectables or are a rare one time drop for each enemy (like one in 500 or something) and looks like that enemy, something you could get from it or something keeping with the theme, so a slime might drop a slime mask or contact lenses that change eye color

The multiplayer is really cool but that friendship mechanic stole my heart. I always thought those gift mechanics lacked depth. It might be interesting to allow gifting as well, but if you don't have a good relationship, it isn't a special day, or if you've already done it too much, it would hurt your relationship. There should be a variety of ways to interact with NPCs, not just one great way. I think a final thing that could really give them life is have them do tasks that you could help with. Maybe one will go fighting and appreciate the help, but maybe one likes to fish alone and won't enjoy the company unless you're already close.

I think you should add events for all the npcs or some of them so they can become comfortable around you before they just hang out with you no questions asked. I also find the gift friendship boring but, you could make it so that their friendship meter grows faster if a present is given. It could be op but you could add a timer to stop people spamming say in stardew you can only give people gifts once a day twice a week.

Here’s an idea, increasing the saturation or changing the colour palette of the Players, since currently their soft green skin blends in with the soft green world. Games like Halo use bright primary colours on their enemies against soft or desaturated coloured backgrounds so they pop out more.

Instead of packing all the data and then sending it to a connecting client, I recommend just sending the seed that was used to generate the world and then generating the world client side. Changes that are made to the world can be sent under a separate packet which will hardly ever exceed the data limit.

I think the power of the bow should creep back down after reaching full draw power. As it would be both more immersive and add some timing skill to it. Holding a traditional bow intended for combat at full draw is actually pretty hard to do. The whole holding your draw thing can only be done for a few moments irl. So you could make it so releasing the bow as it hits the peak deals full damage, but loosing too early does less damage and travels less distance the earlier its released. And holding the shot for too long also reduces its power and range. Giving you a skill based sweet spot for loosing the arrow.

I think you could just delete the block and drop an item on the ground asynchronosously, no need to wait. The server then can keep track on who will recieve the dropped item in inventory. To make things appear faster you could do some predictions/determinations.

The multiplayer block exploit reminded me of Spiffing Brit and I am now resolved to run a campaign to make him try the game when it comes out eventually to try and break it for you ;) Also the hang out mechanic reminds me of Littlewood, yay! There you could get some friendship once a day complimenting the npc (worth noting that in Littlewood the flow of time is linked to your stamina, and a compliment takes some stamina, so the idea of spending "time" is there) and then invite them to hang out. In that game you have a chance to get additional resources when you do an activity the npc enjoys while hanging out with them that scale with friendship. Could be something to consider for balance?

imagine if the npcs gave YOU items once you reach a high enough relationship. These items wouldnt HAVE to be obtained but IF obtained they could add small QoL improvements to the player... like for example an npc that likes fishing gives you their favourite rod adding a sentimental value and a story on the tool you just obtained along with slightly better stats 👀

I'm really curious about the challenge of sending large procedural maps to clients. I'm wondering just how much data you ended up sending. One approach could be to use the same seed and generate the map all over again, no? Alternatively, could you express your map with each tile being represented by a single pixel, like your mini-map, effectively 'zipping' your map down, then recreate it.

not sure if someone already said that, but you actually wouldn't need to transfer the whole map over if the map is procedural generated, you would only need to send the initial seed the host used to generate the map, and the client could generate it from there now you would only have to sync user placed/removed tiles and buildings which should be way less then the whole map :D

I'm not sure if u have this figured out or haven't thought of it yet. But while watching u fix the npc to not get stuck on walls blocking their path, and having a schedule and people can build into environment . This means they can trap the npc if not worked around it by code.
@WattDesigns
@WattDesigns Жыл бұрын
Yes! Right now it looks at the NPCs schedule and decides where they should go (for example, “home at 7:00, beach at 9:30, home at noon, tavern at 15:00, home again at 19:00”). It then checks that there is a path from each destination to the next - if not, it gets removed. So if a the player blocks off a path to the beach and tavern, our NPC will stay home all the time. Every time a tile gets placed, we iterate through the NPCs to see if their schedules are still valid. We only do one NPC per frame tho, since we don’t want a huge lag spike And if the player traps the NPC somewhere, the NPC will unload once the player is about 200 tiles away (about 2 full screen widths). Now that the NPC is unloaded, it’ll appear again once the player walks by it’s scheduled path So the player may return to find the NPC has magically escaped their prison and is now back on track with their schedule, and while that’s goofy, it’s kinda the only reasonable way to deal with it without over complicating things.
@coolman618
@coolman618 Жыл бұрын
Just thinking here, after 2 npcs that are "besties" and you lead one to the other they have a chance of producing offspring. Maybe have similar schedules as the parents and a small chance of picking up a different schedule from all that you have generated. That way, if a npc dies off, there is still a chance that the world could repopulate.

Not sure what you mean by "having an invisible ghost taking an item from the inventory". Do you mean that the item will just vanish from the player's inventory (without the player knowing what happened), or is there actually a ghost character in the game who steals items. The 2nd idea (i.e., having a trickster ghost who steals items) sounds like a fun and clever solution to the multiplayer problem, but the 1st idea (items suddenly inexplicably vanishing from one's inventory) doesn't sound too great, it might just feel like a glitch to players.

Heya, if one wanted to teach themselves how to develop the physics that you have on your bow there, where would you suggest they start? I've made a system with the charge already, which was super fun, but the physics that you have with sliding across a the "top down plane" baffles my brain.
@WattDesigns
@WattDesigns Жыл бұрын
The answer is a bit complicated, and it starts with a problem: all the enemies colliders are at their feet. So I shouldn’t detect a hit when the arrow “art” hits the monster “art” - I should instead detect a hit when the arrows base (where it is hovering above the ground) hits the monsters feet collider. Hopefully that issue makes sense, let me know and I can reiterate. To make the arrow only hit monsters when the base of the arrow hits the monsters feet, I have a gameobject with a rigidbody and a collider. This represents where the arrow is, but without any height, as if it were sliding along the ground. When I shoot my bow directly right at an enemy, this object slithers along the ground from my feet to the enemies feet (or wherever on the ground I aim) Hovering above this object (as a child of it) is the arrow sprite art. The art rotates depending on the direction. To make it look like the arrow “falls” to the ground as it travels, I have the art slowly lower towards our object as the arrow travels. If the arrow was only charged for 1/10th the charge, then it’ll lower 10x faster. Note that as it lowers, it changes angle (as a real arrow would). Then, when the arrow reaches its destined distance (which depends how long you charge) I freeze the position, and change the sprite to a second sprite. This second sprite only contains the back half of the arrow so it looks like it’s “stuck”. After 10 seconds or whatever, it fades out and gets put back in a buffer of arrows

Any indie dev entering into the world of multiplayer has balls of steal in my view, at least from a QA point of view. Maybe not if it's just a run of the mill shooter but if you add procedural mechanics that's a big multiplier. Add physics and you've just added an insane amount of complexity to debugging your game.

This is probably just an oversight by me, but say it takes 2 seconds to break a block. Well, at 1.9 seconds you send the break request command resulting in everyone getting the results at the 2 second mark. This is obviously an issue if there isn't any time to break, but otherwise it could work?
@WattDesigns
@WattDesigns Жыл бұрын
True, unless they cancel the action at the 1.95 second mark (or get hit by an enemy or something). Then the command to break will be sent at 1.9 when they didn’t really finish destroying it by 2.0 But other than that I don’t see any issues 🤔

This is of course a lot easier said than done but why not only send the seed for the map to all other clients and then generate the map on the client?
@WattDesigns
@WattDesigns Жыл бұрын
It was a tough call, but I decided on sending the map because: - if I ever accidentally used non-seeded randomness for dumb stuff (door on the left or the right) it would be different between the two players.. just another thing to debug - since the generation will be so complex, it might take more time to recreate it for every client (maybe a couple minutes) every time than to just send it in 10 seconds. This depends tho, I’m not sure how long generation will end up taking. - would we save just the seed + changes too? What if there’s an update to change the generation algorithm? Any saved seeds would be useless.. if we’re gonna save all the tiles anyway, it’s not TOO much work to transmit them, so overall it’s just easier - also terraria does it this way, and they have bigger maps, so that was good enough for me 🤷‍♀️
