I remember, in 1964 (I think), when I was 12 years old, I was watching 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium' on our little black and white TV set. This programme was live (and therefore time limited) and was the biggest show on TV in the UK. That night was special because The Beatles were the headline act, which went on last. The act before The Beatles on that show was Roy Orbison, and he had such an impact that the audience demanded repeated encores and curtain calls from him. The Beatles were in the wings on the stage and were getting agitated because the longer Roy stayed out, the shorter time they would have to perform. Eventually they acted and, as Roy was about to go out for another curtain call, they grabbed him and then went out themselves. Of course, it didn't affect the later relationship they had with Roy and they were mutually admiring of each other's talents. So much so that Roy and George Harrison later teamed up in the 'super group' 'The Travelling Wilburys'.

Roy was known for performing while standing motionless & wearing black clothes to match his dyed black hair & dark sunglasses. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Running Scared", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Leah" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the rock supergroup "Traveling Wilburys" with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne.
