I remember riding freeride with my friend when we were young, when he got concussed on the run-up to a jump. He went over the bars of his mtb and hit head to ground. He was wearing a helmet but was unconscious for a good 20-30 seconds. When he woke up, his first question was “where am I?” He didn’t recognize me, and couldn’t remember his name. His memory started off at about 5 seconds long after he woke up. He’d ask “where am I?” And then would ask again seconds later, having forgotten that he just asked the question. The loop started to get longer, but his memory would still wipe after a minute or so, and he’d ask the same questions. It was just me and him on this mountain bike trail, two 14-year-olds, a couple miles from the town streets. I remember hiking out with him and being deeply uneasy walking with my best friend, who I had known all my life and spent almost every day with, who kept forgetting his name, didn’t remember my name or who I was, and didn’t remember why he was on a mountain bike with me.
