I was like.. 7 or something

Dang bro nature is a silent killer and I think we all under estimate its power. I'm prolly the same age as you and over the summer I was working on a fire crew for my county. We were out in wyoming fighting this decent-sized fire in the middle of nowhere. It was a typical deployment and conditions we've handled before, but we had split our team up into 2 groups and I was with 4 other ppl on this slanted ridge tryna dig some line. We had a young lookout 'watching' our position who wasn't apart of our crew so no one knew this guy. After about 20 mins or so, the fire had jumped our line and was burning the crowns of the trees around us and embers/spot fires were beginning to pop up on the opposite side of the line. The dude in charge of our small squad told us we needed to stop what were doing an start running (we didn't have to drop our gear or tools but running is never a good sign). First time in my life I remember feeling genuine fear for my life as running from a wildfire typically means your situation is really really bad. The whole ordeal lasted maybe 2 mins before we reached a safe area and hiked back to the lookout. Our squad boss chewed this kid out cuz he wasn't noting the second teams position so had no idea the fire was on our door step. Alot of things coulda been done to prevent it but like someone commented, 'everyone has 2 lives, and the second one begins when you realize you only have one' Crazy experience and prolly the closest I've been to death. mother nature doesn't play around and it can be hard to remember that sometimes.

This video reminds me of an experience I witnessed with a friend and his mates while they were climbing Mount Arapiles in Australia. It was their first time rock climbing, and during the ascent, my friend was placing a nut(a metal wedge used for protection)when it fell loose. Fortunately, his backup gear was about four meters below him. However, he hit his head on a rock while falling, resulting in a gash that required a trip to the hospital. He returned to our hometown a week later, looking relatively normal despite the bandages on his head. The takeaway from this experience is simple: prioritize safety and preparation. If you’re venturing into something new, check your gear and learn from those with more experience.
