15:19 when looking for cracked traces, you can't attack the site like that and expect to 'find' what you were looking for afterwards unless the damage is severe, copper is very soft, so using blades or the rotary tool, you will usually smooth it over and 'repair' micro-fractures, but in a way they will probably oxidize and fail again later if left un-tinned. If you truly need to locate a fault and have confidence it was bad in a spot, usually best to strip back 2 areas slightly away from it and probe at those, so you can't nudge things around. Even poking the copper surface with probes right beside a crack, can cause it to deform from the site and mushroom out in a radius, enough to bridge micro-cracks that were intermittent.

Absolutely - I noticed the "crack" only after I scraped it. I knew it was very unlikely the multimeter would find something because, as you say, copper is malleable and will "fix" a small crack just by touching it. Even though that was a crack, the Mac was kind of working so I suspect the multimeter would have not found anything. Thanks for the tip though, always appreciated!

I'm sure I was not the only one yelling at my screen to unhook the tech step so cool to see that unit back up and running though great video as always

I'm very happy to see the machine repaired and the TechStep in action. Very clear that it is a diagnostic tool that still requires a skilled technician to use it effectively. Two questions: 1) Do you have any problems mixing low-melt and regular solded during your repairs? 2) What are you using to limit current on your mains input power? Thanks for a great demo!
@simontay48512 ай бұрын
For question 2. You use a 100W tungsten filament bulb in series to limit the current.
@tony3592 ай бұрын
Yes, the TechStep is not a magic wand indeed but it gives a lot of help. I add normal solder as well because I need a "blob" to conduct heat and low melt is very expensive so I only add a bit of low melt at the end. Also, I understand that the Low melt + leaded solder will lower the melting temp even more. I use lightbulbs in series :) Take a look here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWnNgqeYZbF0nqM Thanks for watching!

Great apple analyzer. Thanks for showing. I guess they will never make it open source, to have one on my own.... Adrian has an excellent video on the codes (thanks for mention). If codes and protocols were public, we could be able to make a cheap one with a raspi.... Great video and beautiful system !!!

The link or the project is in the description, I don’t know what they’re going to do with it yet. But yes it’d be great to be able to build one ourselves!

Amazing. Thank you for your persistence. I certainly get problem fatigue and have to walk away from my projects for a while. Nice to see this back up and running!

Excellent! Who would have thought a vram chip could corrupt everything! I don't think the official tool was as helpful as I expected it to be, and I think it is not a service friendly computer at least for diagnosing problems. Very good work for a very slow machine that needs boosting, Cheers from Greece, keep up! Jim.

Thanks Jim! Yes, the TechStep was not super-useful but still it pointed me to the right direction. For next time I'll try the serial method! :) Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video, great to see your desoldering techniques, you make surface mount rework look so easy. Please keep showing your process its very interesting. What kind of flux are you using?

Thank you! I am using "Kingbo" but it's a fake brand so you'll get random stuff. I buy it from an Aliexpress store called Riesba and that - so far - has been really good. Every other "Kingbo" I tried was junk.

I was smilling seeing your hapiness when the computer gave you happy MAC sound. But I don't understand one thing. What you have in sockets if 4MB is soldered and total memory is 10MB? Sorry, maybe I'm missing something here as I;m noit familiar with MACs. From a PC user point of view you should have 6MB or 12MB.
@tony3592 ай бұрын
I forgot to mention that: it’s a BIOS limitation of the colour classic. Not the best apple machine apparently And thanks!

You said reproduction techstep? Is there a project around to make one? I have a 575 board i need to fix and this would be very helpful assuming its supported by it?

That chime I believe is for RAM failure, that is where I would be focusing.
@tony3592 ай бұрын
Thanks Scott - it's the generic "FAULT FOUND" chime. Clearly RAM can be an issue but it could sound like that for anything that the self--test routine deems as bad. Thanks for watching!
