I really love the idea of this device, but I’d genuinely pay more than the asking price if they made it more rugged and usable. If this thing had the build quality of an MC101 instead of a cereal box toy it would be a winner in my book. I love that it has two romplers and basically a full DX7 minus a couple of operators. Hopefully Yamaha doesn’t give up on groove boxes cause this is so close to being great.

I agree with you that it has great sounds. However, it did not convince me this would be a way to create grooves. I ended buying a Polyend Play+ afterwards. Now, I like the way this is working. I’m totally with you on the Circuit Tracks. I loved the design of it and its features. I only didn’t like two things: 1. The sound. The ly all seemed so similar and try as I might I couldn’t find very many sounds that suited me. 2. No screen at all and I know that’s a design choice and that would have worked for me if I didn’t also use so many other devices that I forgot how to use it each time. I finally sold it even though it was so nice in most ways.

Would love if Novation make a Circuit with polyphonic sampled sounds like piano and Rhodes... Yeah the Yamaha is like the Roland MC101 is that way: you can use it as a mere sound module. Actually with TE KOII the stretching is fine so you can play non-synth instruments easily. But then we need something with a sort of keyboard and an arranger right on it, OP-1 is still the only thing that does that but it's way too expensive. SmplTrek is very interesting and has a full-fledged arranger but for some reason instead of using the two-octave keyboard they use for all their other gear they made it into a GameBoy thing. So weird, just when you needed more real estate for the interface is when they chose to make it gameboy size. MPC Keys 37 has all that power but no real arranger. It's such a no-brainer. make an eight-track machine that has it all: two octaves of keys (or offset pads), a decent synth engine, decent sampling facilities including onboard microphone and resampling, plenty of memory to record a full album, plenty of sample sounds and polyphony, looper as well as sequencer, arp, and a decent set of send and mastering effects. SmplTrek comes pretty close but too damn tiny.

The Seqtrak, a good, small MIDI keyboard and an iPad. All you'd need then is a stand for it all, maybe someone could 3D print one. Could be a nice little stack with all of the great sounds the Seqtrak has, a keyboard with velocity sensitivity, some drum pads and a screen for the Seqtrak software. Probably wouldn't be close to what Yamaha had in mind for the Seqtrak with it's compact size. But you can always take the Seqtrak out of the stand if you want to take it somewhere.

Thanks for this review, very well balanced and even handed. Your attention to the workflow was particularly appreciated. I get that, like the Circuit Tracks, there are UI compromises to be made with any device without a display. But inconsistencies like the synth track length are a total turn off - it just demonstrates whoever designed it did not have the end user's experience of the device in mind. Contrast that with novation's products, which, once you learn how to do something it applies everywhere, and often across multiple devices. Shame, as I'd have bought the SeqTrak otherwise. Yamaha: Take notes.

the sounds are definitely the strong part of this machine. I'm not sure what's best for your situation - the seqtrak does rely on lights to convey a lot of information (like step sequencing, notes, scales, which mode you are in etc) Also, I imagine is a little more difficult to orient your hand on the device since there isn't such a distinct separation between the buttons. For the app, that is where the more indepth sound design happens, as well as the saving / customizing of your set. but I wonder what Accessibility features apple has and if those could be applied to the seqtrak app?

I actually have only one complaint. Why only 3 synths? I'm not very advanced and I'm doing covers so far, but I have like bass, pad, solo and that's it - the only other option is to use the sampler. It could be solved by allowing changing instruments between patterns, but it doesn't work too - you are stuck with whatever you assigned to the tracks in the first place. I would literally re-buy the device if Yamaha added like 2 more synths to the setup. Seqtrak 2, please? I actually bought MPC One+ lately, so that I can overcome this obstacle. I guess I'll try to use them both at some point. Now don't get me wrong, I like Seqtrak very much - especially the broad range of instruments (dare I say, the biggest among such devices? - I'm talking about synths specifically), the workflow is quite good (the piano roll in the app is kind of clumsy, but usable nevertheless), key combos requires some getting used to, but when you use them once or twice, you quickly learn and I actually like how the device looks *completely* different than any other Yamaha instrument (and most musical instruments, if we're at it). It's fun to look at people hearing what it can do and asking with amazement: "You really composed it on this device?"

@@Taetro the layout on circuit machines is quite well designed. For me there are two cons: lack of self sufficiency and lack of screen. Deep settings are available via computer app only, for me this is significant point. Also, i know that many folks got used to Launchpad so they natively feel Circuit layout. I realized that i need display with letters and parameters, i need some text to read. Elektrons, EMX, ESX, Rm1x, DX200, even volcas - they all have display based workflow. The only beast that i think i will like among grid based grooveboxes is Polyend Play +. It has both display and grid that work together quite well.

I hope as the technology keeps progressing that little screens will become more standard and affordable! Certainly the latest generation of midi controllers are coming with screens - they’d be MORE useful on the groove boxes.
@PalaceofVision2 ай бұрын
I disagree. I think that now that everyone has at least one device, phone, pad, whatever that is significantly more powerful than the processors in smaller, less expensive devices like the SEQTRAK, companies will be wiser to create midi controllers that are very tactile and easy to use and have far more of the internal processing and screen work done by people’s devices. That’s maybe the way Yamaha can come up with a relatively compact, low cost, high functionality device. If they put a serious screen on it (one people can actually see) the cost of the devices will increase massively. And part of SEQTRAK’s appeal is that it’s not stupidly expensive. Why put a tiny weeny black and white screen on something when I have a phone sized screen, or bigger, in my pocket?

Loved the sounds but the key buttons were so flaky I returned mine. Hoping they will improve build quality and I might buy one again.

Totally…that’s where the midi keyboard comes in handy but then you’re pretty much doubling your footprint

@@Taetro I ended up buying another one after watching this. This one works fine. And paired with the Torso T-1 (which it will power over USB) its a whole lot of fun.

A lot of negative reviews for it though.

Compact? Stand alone? MacBook Air, with a Pebble 2 Mouse and decent headphones.
