the comment about the music sounding sloppier at times, it is actually like that, the staff had performers play the songs and trying to be as in character as they can to the character that would play it, and shows in how you see Ryo movements, nijika eyes, bocchi hunching over or kita being fixed on one thing at a time with her gaze, they rotoscoped the performers and add new angles and all to make it the more visually appealing, as well as working on the mixing so it resembles the most what they are doing, with the panning of instruments when they perform in the club or such, even in ep 8, its really noticeable side by side how their first song, is played different and you can feel the out of sync that is being mentioned

3:28 this is the biggest problem of this anime, the less you understand Hitori the less you will enjoy it. I was talking with someone some weeks ago about normal people not begin able to apreciate her growth and he said "did she grow at all?" This was after episode 8 lol. In the words of Ryou: it might not connect with too many people, but those it does, it'll hit deeply. Of course her anxiety is exagerated a little for the gags. Do people throw out due to anxiety? Yep, I know a kid who did this in the church. Do people pass out due to anxiety? Probally, I never heard of it but I can see it happening. Do people randomly freezes when they remember childhood traumas? I don't think so, I think Bocchi time is just an exagerated internal monologue. But as you said it may just be myself projecting my own social anxiety over her. Either way this show works.

I have actually been close to passing out from sheer anxiety a few times. It's not particularly fun when that happens, but thankfully, those occasions have been few and far in between...

Yeah people who don't relate or understand bocchi's character might not like this anime that much and won't be able to see her growth but mannnnn someone with social anxiety it will hit hard i cried watching this anime multiple times even in funny scenes cause it just hit too hard i was crying at one moment and laughing at next and it was a rollercoaster of emotions for me so yeah but for people who don't understand her will just think it's just cute girls doing cute things anime Yes a lot of it for bocchi is kinda over exaggerated but still this anime captures social anxiety perfectly And i think one more thing why this anime hits hard is because bocchi has supportive friends and they helps her grow even if it's really small growth but in reality it's not like that and people suffering from social anxiety will keep suffering and might not get friends like bocchi so that's why this anime hits hard to people with social anxiety cause they want supportive friends just like bocchi at least this is the case for me Idk mannnnnn

I'm a musician, among many other things and this really is on the nose series about being a up and coming musician. Ep1 audition (and EP7&8) shows clearly that it's truly different to play alone in your home, and playing with other people. They're not the same and it's "easy" to be really good studio/home musician, but it's different set of skills to play with others or to be on stage. But you need them both to truly grow as a musician, even if you prefer one over the other. I prefer being at home. Composing, arranging, practicing in my own world and not having to worry about what I sound like or if I make a mistake. Because I know that I can just try again and nobody heard that. I know what I was supposed to do and I can just fix it and move on or I can freely try different variations until I find what I want etc. But if I only had stayed home, I would have limited myself GREATLY as a musician. There are things that you learn through playing with others, things that you realize you need to work on and confidence is gathered through stage performances so that you don't lock up if others are around. And you learn not to care that others are listening... you just do your thing. The EP8 hit hard, it's this horrible sinking feeling when that happens, that you don't play the best you know you can and you see people disinterested or even leaving. The EP6 was nose on, the second Kikuri started playing you could hear that she's clearly adlibbing based on the basic chord structure, but she's clearly done this for years and there's this amazing amount of confidence, routine and feel that she has for playing bass. And the whole story about young, upcoming musician meeting these experienced, professional musicians, who will guide/teach them, support them to reach their potential and give them confidence is spot on, I wouldn't be a musician without help from some amazing professionals that I've had the chance to call friends. And yes, in parts of the show they clearly play sloppily. Even if there's no obvious mistakes, there's this uneasiness, stiffness and tension in their playing and they're not completely in sync... they make choices that you wouldn't when you're relaxed, they rush a bit, then go back a bit, dynamics is all over the place etc. and in EP5 audition there's this uneasy start, clear mistakes, but they slowly get stuff correct and at the end they're really well in sync, same happens with EP8 performance, but at the end of the first song, they're still not really in synch... you can feel that they're not concentrating because they're all so anxious. And that's really hard to do on PURPOSE when you've played for a long time. So hats off to the sound team and musicians who helped them to get it right. There are clearly people in the team making this that have background in music and know what it's like... that's wonderful! And the fact that after their big concert, there's much rejoicing, but at the same time there's the plain fact that it was just one small gig, for small audience and the smallest step on the road of thousands of performances, thousands of miles of travel, thousands of hours honing their craft and it's not like they've arrived anywhere really... and now the real work starts and it can be mundane and difficult, but that's what being musician is about. It's not "sex drugs and rock 'n roll".. it's hard work and even if you do your utmost best, success isn't guaranteed... so do it because you love doing it... not because you want to achieve something. And you'll get there.

3:49 I'm one of those people. Watching Bocchi I have a constant feeling of "that's EXACTLY what it's like for me" and it's my anime of the year as a result. Komi is a show that does nothing but use anxiety as the butt of jokes, and frankly I don't like that show at all. But Bocchi comes from writers who truly understand what it's like living like that. It's interesting to hear you say you thought Bocchi was "over the top" at first because all I can think is how realistic it is.

There's actually a video floating around that splits the audition performance with the more nervous live performance to show the audio work that they did indeed not just replay the same song but created an entirely separate track that reflects their mistakes. Bocchi the Rock for me this season is about an anime that should've been a simple watch but for some surprising reason goes really hard in unexpected ways. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH3QYmN-d7mrmrM

5:48 you are right, in episode 8 for example, everybody in kessoku band was nervous hence why the first song they played sounded off and not synchronized. their next song sounded great and in sync after the solo bocchi did which made the band members regain their confidence. i think it’s a cool minor detail that also adds to the realism of a band playing in front of an audience for the first time

I remembered someone saying on a comment thread I was once where all introverts said "We relate" and he said "But you ain't anxious talking with people on the internet?" Like, isn't that also what Bocchi shows in the anime? She's more open to just playing online than playing publicly more since she doesn't really need to face people while performing, and it gives her absurd imaginations of public prosecutions and stuff. That detail among all the other relatable ones really got me hooked with the anime.

Some Anime really takes time and episodes to release it's full potential; There is also an Anime that got a poor rating in every episode or overall in a Season but exploded it's ratings in Global. There are also an Anime who got a high rating overall in one season but easily forgotten just one week or a month after the season has changed. What I'm trying to say is; Never judge an Anime title from its early ratings and popularity. Bocchi the Rock taught us that lesson and made a big comeback, becoming a *Masterpiece* this season.

Bocchi The Rock! is okay but if there's one Music Franchise about all-female rock bands that I could recommend that would be BanG Dream and out of the 7 bands in the franchise 4 of them has real life counterparts they are Poppin'Party, Roselia, RAISE A SUILEN and Morfonica their seiyuus are real-life accomplished musicians and they are not just voicing the characters they are also the ones who play the songs in live concerts.

I went into this anime expecting to vibe with it and honestly... didn't. And I say this as someone who as some social anxiety. Idk maybe my issue is simply only having "some" rather than an extreme case, but to me, I think the problem is that it just felt like "Social Anxiety, the anime" and Bocchi just felt like "Social Anxiety, the character." I didn't really get a sense of who Bocchi is because everything about here character just felt like it could be summed up with "Sad, lonely, guitar otaku with social anxiety." Sad and lonely are emotions or states of mind, but not personality traits, and Social Anxiety is not a personality either. It's a behavioral trait which makes someone too anxious to show their personality. That's what I felt like I was missing. I was missing Bocchi's true personality. Her spirit. Her soul. And I don't really consider her an introvert. Ryo is an introvert: someone who's true personality is of a quiet person who is perfectly comfortable being quiet and even flat out rudely antisocial, unashamedly. There was never a sense that she was too nervous to show her true self, but that she was just being herself. Because of this, whenever Bocchi was shown trying to improve herself or overcome her anxiety, I wasn't really sure what truer, hidden, self was trying to come forth. As in, I'm honestly not sure who she'd be without the social anxiety. I don't know how she'd carry herself, what her hobbies would be other than music, what she'd eat, how she'd eat, or how she'd interact with others, etc. And I think that's a problem from a writing standpoint. They've never talked about something like the weather or their favorite genres of movies in the show, but I could honestly take decent guesses at those things with each of the other three main girls. With Bocchi tho, I honestly don't have a clue. Idk maybe her inner self was teased in the scene where she was trying to come up with lyrics where she imagined herself as a party person, but it's hard to tell because the anime showed her imagine herself as like 6-7 different things, some of them from different time periods. It doesn't help that I can't even characterize her off of fashion choice because it is literally a one-note pink tracksuit that matches her hair. What do I make of it? That she's a girl..? Cuz it's.. pink..? And she wears it ALL. THE. TIME. At home and outdoors everyday at any time of day. So idk, maybe the point is she's honestly not sure who she is either, which is totally fine for a coming of age story. But even if that's the case, I feel like the question doesn't get addressed in the anime enough, so I wonder if the storytellers actually know who she is without the anxiety either. The question driving her journey should not just be "Will she overcome her social anxiety?" but also "Who is she underneath?" and "Will she find out?" I probs think about this sort of thing more than most people to begin with, but I believe it's all valid, especially because the story has elements of narrative character arc and drama rather than only being a flat out comedy. I mean yeah I'll say it probs doesn't help my enjoyment with the fact that I do feel like the comedy is a bit forced at times. Like I can feel the show trying to get a laugh out of me. But in the end, I feel that it puts all my focus onto the narrative drama aspect of the show, and I feel that it's lacking for the reasons above. Don't get me wrong, I do root for her for her small little wins, but it's lessened by me not knowing who she actually wants to be. This all my opinion anyway. Not like I need others to agree with it. If you like it then cool.
@toekneetalks7153 Жыл бұрын
I mean, fair points, but as you said I think this show is about Bocchi trying to figure out who she is, because even she doesn't know. She doesn't really have an identity because she did nothing until music and then only did music.

@@MGdrifts Yo, my only "expectation" was that I might like it. Not that I was expecting some specific genre or level of quality or type of plot/characters. I went in with no clue what it was about. I simply had a positive impression of the show with the praise it was getting. And why is it so abnormal to have hope for a show you're about to start? If that's such a bad thing than none of these praise videos should exist should they? Anyway I'm a little shocked that all you got from my review was that "I didn't like it simply because some expectation of mine wasn't met." *Nothing* in my entire review was about expectations. I was taking the show at face value and evaluating what I saw. Please don't just invalidate everything i said like that. And if u didn't bother to read it all then don't comment. It's basically an essay after all so I'm grateful for those who do take the time, but I do hope u didn't just stop a short way in before deciding to comment.

@@toekneetalks7153 I've began seeing more of that too. The shows most immediate appeal might be "this show understands you! It understands social anxiety!" but the real journey is Bocchi finding her true self. That being said, I think it would help if maybe we as the audience had a sense of what direction she might be heading. Ofc, she wouldn't know, but in my mind, it would give more satisfying payoff when she does make improvements because we'd have an idea of what she's improving towards. We'd grow more and more hopeful for her because we know there *is* a path for her. This "hope" part might feel like an obvious given no matter what, but I think it really does help when the narrative itself gives us something to wanna reach for and show it to Bocchi saying "this'll be you someday! Just keep trying and don't give up! You'll get to here eventually!" Otherwise, to me it just feels a little empty. Most of the development I've seen is her overcoming her social anxiety. But again, that's not a personality, so its like you strip away the social anxiety and what is she? I don't know and I think that's why I have trouble feeling happy whenever she does make those improvements. I'm fine with her not knowing, but I think it would improve viewing experience even more if the viewer has an idea-- even a faint one. Even for those who already enjoy the show very much.
@rohanali4088 Жыл бұрын
@@lucaspoon4202 I feel the real journey of the show is more about Bocchi coming to terms with her true self not being something that everyone will like or appreciate, and not letting that realization stop her from expressing that more vulnerable side of herself. I do think the show subtly hints at bocchi true self. I would characterize bocchi's true self as someone who is passionate, stubborn, confident, and ambitious and more of a serious and gloomy character. A pretty good detail in the show that reveals this side of her is how she is in her performances. She may not be super expressive with her playing all the time but the lyrics, music, and dialogue do portray that more willful side of someone who wants to be liked and noticed by others. The gags also show that bocchi doesn't really like to communicate the problems, ideas, or preferences she has. She would rather keeps them just as overly exaggerated thoughts because she is scared(anxious) of the vulnerability that comes from revealing those things no matter how trivial they are and the chance that people wont care or hate her for doing that. So all in all I do think bocchi is an interesting character even without the social anxiety because of the passionate and ambitious outlook she has on her life despite being a pretty gloomy and serious person. And I think the main journey of the show is bocchi slowly overcoming her fear of showing her true self and being someone that puts her true self out there socially and musically even if she may be hated or disliked by others.
