I love this saw. I replaced my Dewalt DWS779R with the Ridgid 12" to save space. I wouldn't call it an upgrade but it worked for me. I was also hit with the bottom miter pivot issue on my miter station. The plans I got from your site that I also love. Luckily I had the room to move the left side of the station over so that's what I did then expanded the center an extra 8". That fixed the pivot issue. Your dust upgrade keeps it much cleaner than when the Dewalt was doing the cutting. It's funny I bought that saw to save space and ended up using more space in my shop. Oh well, it worked out okay and I'm happy.

Hell of a review. You just convinced this hobbyist woodworker to get this saw. I actually got the 779 and returned it because it was absolutely massive. I was going to buy a regular non sliding miter but I knew in the back of my head I’d regret not being able to do wider cuts which would inevitably come up

I bought one of each of this saw (10” & 12”) both Delta for the theater set production department I ran for three years and they have worked out very well. Lots of use over the last four years. The 12” in in a large miter station with 8’ on each side and the 10” is on a mobile stand to be used on stage for last minute work not able to be done in the shop. Everything in your review was exactly what we experienced. I did put high quality blades on them. (Popular Tool brand miter saw blades)

Great review/comparison, Travis~! I have an older 12" Dewalt compound miter saw (non-sliding) and have been looking to upgrade. I've been eyeing the Bosch for quite some time, but now seeing this video, that Rigid looks like a good option as well. I saw the shadow line feature on the Makita saw and I really like it over a laser/LED, but that one is cordless and I don't want to launch into another battery format, since I'm already into Porter Cable, Bosch, & Milwaukee. I'll definitely be doing some further comparison. Whichever way I go, I'll be sure to pick up your dust collection shroud. Thanks much~!

I removed the "Inconveniently Located Handle" from my Cruzer after I installed in my miterstation. It is in the drawer below the saw if I ever need it. This allowed me to bring my 2 1/2 dust collection hose in without interfering with the tilts. Also if you choose to retain the original dust chute, I recommend removing the reinforcement bars in the dust path. Mine consistently clogged. If I purchased this saw now, I would have purchased the Shop Nation dust collector. Since I designed my workstation around the original configuration, I have 4 inch dust collection above and below the saw that does the job. My kids call it the "Chop Saw Shrine" . Way more work than Shop Nation's collector 🙂

Defiantly looking forward to the comparison video. I noticed you didn't include the Makita 12 inch miter. Will that be in the your review? I will be upgrading soon and looking to buy something. The 399 looks appealing for sure as the Makita is super spendy. Like twice the price! Those two were really on my list. The turn off for me is the laser with the Makita. I think a shadow line is super functional. Not that I will be making the fine furniture. Just want something I won't have to rebuy later and is a good saw.

Wait! Hold on… Just a second… I think you said to get a highly accurate crosscut us a tablesaw and sled. Not that I disagree but as a hobbiest hoping to make great stuff someday it seems to me instead of upgrading my non-sliding mitre saw I would be better off getting a second table saw, making crosscut sled, and getting a great crosscut blade instead. Which in all reality sounds both insane and pratical. Use my current miter saw for carpentry, current table saw for rips, new table saw for crosscuts. I like doing dados on a table saw as well. But the crosscut table saw could be selected making sure it could take a dado stack… or use my current saw as I am now. Thanks for the great review. Also I have been following the better dust collector journey. There will be a purchase from me when the weather turns cold. I do the pop up shop because my woodworking shares the garage with my MX-5. In the warm months woodworking is mostly an outdoor experience.

12:08 Yeah. Why would I buy a ~Sliding~ Miter Saw if all I do is use it in the ~locked~ position. Might as well buy one of the cheaper models without the ~sliding~. Which is what I am thinking about right now, get a Miter Saw at all, just a standard 12" one or a sliding one. As you said, wider pieces are best cut with something else like a Table Saw, a Track Saw or even a simple Circular Handsaw with a straightedge. The main reason for a Miter Saw is the accuracy of the Miters it can cut.

Great review! As an owner of the 12” Delta Cruzer model, I have to agree with each point you made, both the good and bad ones. I am also the owner of the dust chute you designed and am incredibly happy with it! It does make a huge difference in dust control. I no longer get a blast of saw dust in my face when I use it. I was so bad that I got to the point where I was always looking for a suitable alternative to the miter saw when a cut was needed, just to avoid the dust. Now I go straight to the miter saw with no hesitation. Thank you so much for that!
@brandonhoffman47128 ай бұрын
I do not see that as a professional tool. Maybe for a framer. But it's made to fit on a workbench easy which isn't where framers work... From a professional standpoint I would go with the Bosch for the money or the Kapex (gulp) for the quality of cut. From a homeowners standpoint. This would lead me to still want to hire a professional for anything critical. Which might be exactly what you're looking for! I use the Bosch. I saw it as a game changer when it came out. Our company picked one up 10 years ago it seems when we landed a big hardwood job. It's been a workhorse! It even survived a car accident with minimal damage.
@TomMustache2 жыл бұрын
Your suggestion to keep it locked should be something more people notice. A huge percentage of us would be able to make almost all the cuts we need on a regular old non-sliding mitre saw. Cheaper, more accurate, lighter, and easier to keep tuned, non-sliders should be in more shops.
@independent9002 жыл бұрын
I agree with your observation but not 100% your conclusion. In "chop saw mode" and dialed in, my Bosh Slide makes great cuts. But I don't always need perfect cuts...sometimes I just need the convenience of getting close, especially when cutting long boards. Of course there are times when I need to break down boards that are 7-8 inches wide x 1 1/2" thick, and a non-slider won't do the job. I've long debated whether a non-sliding saw would be sufficient for me, and always conclude that the slider provides flexibility that is great to have when I need it.

If I had to do it over again, I think I'd just buy a chop saw (save the room and space) to do my rough cutting (and flip over if I need to) and use the TS to get my final pieces. Really the only thing the sliders have going for is convince at that point.

I sold my delta cruzer 12" and bough the bosch glide 12", and I experience very similar drawbacks on both models. Miter saw for rough dimensioning is such a great tool.

You should consider reviewing the Ridgid R4231 which is a sleeper model that came out at the same time as the R4251/R4241 and is also made by Delta. It's a 12" miter and features a short slider (thus eliminating most of the blade deflection issues). All indications is that it's built on the same chassis as the R4251 and your dust chute is probably a direct fit. Not a bad deal for $349 (I paid $329 and I've seen it as low as $299).

Milwaukee and DeWalt for reference only have an 8" cut capacity. I can easily cut through 2x12's or 8" siding at more than 45 degrees. Anyone who has done siding with a miter saw can appreciate the convenience of being able to make these cuts accurately.

Nicely presented evaluation. Interestingly enough, at present , the 10" rigid is more expensive than the 12" . You showed a Bosch glider among your array of saws. Is the dust collection better out of the box with the Bosch? I have seen reviews that thought the Bosch dust collection was fairly descent. So the question is, if the Bosch dust collection is superior, does your dust collection improvement chute, bring the dust reduction close to what the Bosch captures? (Bosch does not have any led shadow or laser line guides). And lastly (sorry for the length) Which 3D printer are you working with? You have a number of well made products..

As I watch this video, I'm thinking there is absolutely nothing either of these saws (or any other similar saw) can do that my 1970's Radial Arm Saw could not do as well if not better. Portability is the only plus I can think of, but being able to rip up to 29" deep into a 4x8' sheet of plywood offsets that IMO (a plus for the radial arm). Oh, and my crosscut is 16" with no weird mods. I never understood why the radial arm saw lost favor and is not mostly extinct except for in limited commercial applications. Yeah, I guess I'm sort of a dinosaur.
