@@jjohnson8977 Or a Mafell ERIKA, except it doesn't rotate in place so it's not really a one-to-one tool. It does completely isolate the carriage from the user's clumsy handling though so there's no way to deflect the blade in "chop-saw" operation. It's also a ~$4,000 tool.

Retired cabinet maker here. This review is top tier. I LOVE that your display area is spotless and totally dust free for the video creation. You are very articulate and your explanations are dead nuts on. I was in business for forty years doing high end work in Boston. So so professional you are ( do in Yoda voice ). I wish all of KZbin videos were of this quality. And the way they have designed the movement arms these days is amazing.

So, yes. He's nailed it. Or sawed it, or whatever. Anyway, I think DPEC should be paying him for this spot on review. I called Ridgid seeking information about the R4241, and they referred me to Delta. I was fortunate enough to get a support gentleman who knew his history regarding the power tool company evolution. Everything this review list is accurate. Kudos to his producer. 👍😉

Great review! As an owner of the 12” Delta Cruzer model, I have to agree with each point you made, both the good and bad ones. I am also the owner of the dust chute you designed and am incredibly happy with it! It does make a huge difference in dust control. I no longer get a blast of saw dust in my face when I use it. I was so bad that I got to the point where I was always looking for a suitable alternative to the miter saw when a cut was needed, just to avoid the dust. Now I go straight to the miter saw with no hesitation. Thank you so much for that!

I do not see that as a professional tool. Maybe for a framer. But it's made to fit on a workbench easy which isn't where framers work... From a professional standpoint I would go with the Bosch for the money or the Kapex (gulp) for the quality of cut. From a homeowners standpoint. This would lead me to still want to hire a professional for anything critical. Which might be exactly what you're looking for! I use the Bosch. I saw it as a game changer when it came out. Our company picked one up 10 years ago it seems when we landed a big hardwood job. It's been a workhorse! It even survived a car accident with minimal damage.

Great video! After having a sliding miter saw for years and finding out all will have deflection, I use it less and less and use my table saw for the perfect 90 degree cuts I need. If I had to do it over again, I think I'd just buy a chop saw (save the room and space) to do my rough cutting (and flip over if I need to) and use the TS to get my final pieces. Really the only thing the sliders have going for is convince at that point.

I have the 12 inch Bosch. I think the deflection is something you overcome with technique. I make it a point to be "easy" on the grip and chop instead of grabbing the handle like it's an arm wrestling contest. I do agree with your comment and others should also be aware. Even the Bosch and Festool saws arent really the best options for a glue line cut but they are both impressive machines. Dust collection is lousy (I think it's a rule for miter saws to have crappy dust control) but they are amazing saws. Noted the Festool does have the best factory dust collection as I'm told by other woodworkers at least until we have your version for the Bosch! Great review and awesome content! Shop greatness achieved!

As another Bosch owner I agree with everything you said here. When I first got mine I was really bummed about all the deflection from the video reviews I kept finding when looking for dust collection. At the end of the day I realized it's not sloppy loose fit so the saw won't just give random cuts. It's deflection and a a general rule I just don't push on handles sideways hard enough to select the saw

His Dust Chute is great. I did have to make one modification to it, though. He has you use shelf liner at the front edge, and it worked fine for me while I was using my shop vacuum. Then, I upgraded to a 1.5hp dust collector, and the shelf liner would get sucked up into the chute. So, I had to duct tape a piece of copper wire to the front edge to hold it in position/shape.

I sold my delta cruzer 12" and bough the bosch glide 12", and I experience very similar drawbacks on both models. Then I come to the reliazation that I should not use miter saw for finish cuts for funiture pieces. Track saw or table saw is more suitable for cross cut wide pieces depending on the situation. Miter saw for rough dimensioning is such a great tool.

in my shop I use my non slider dewalt for miters on molding, baseboard, and other trim. so if I get one of these I need a good degree of accuracy when the motor is locked in place. it would be nice to have the extra capacity on occasion, but the deflection is making me hesitate on adding one of these to my shop.

I love this saw. I replaced my Dewalt DWS779R with the Ridgid 12" to save space. I wouldn't call it an upgrade but it worked for me. I was also hit with the bottom miter pivot issue on my miter station. The plans I got from your site that I also love. Luckily I had the room to move the left side of the station over so that's what I did then expanded the center an extra 8". That fixed the pivot issue. Your dust upgrade keeps it much cleaner than when the Dewalt was doing the cutting. It's funny I bought that saw to save space and ended up using more space in my shop. Oh well, it worked out okay and I'm happy.

Travis, I had the same issue as you with being unable to swing my miter saw to full miter deflection, but I came up with a relatively simple solution. I removed the top surface material from my cabinet and reinforced the upper mounting area of the cabinet, then attached some mounting blocks to the underside of the surface material. I installed 8” (200mm) soft close drawer slides I found on Amazon between the new cabinet reinforcements and the surface mounting blocks so my work surface will slide out and give me the clearance I need. If you get the soft closing type of slide, it does a nice job of holding the saw in the “normal” position for the vast majority of your work. I added two additional holes and put a pin on each side of the front to lock it out in the full open position for when I’m doing my full twist miter cuts. And I don’t know if it’s necessary, but I used 2 slides per side for a total of 4 to give me the most “solid” feel to the sliding surface. I hope that helps! Keep pursuing shop greatness!
@cindyhammack68
@cindyhammack68 2 жыл бұрын
That was my thought about the drawer slides. I'm actually working on a workbench that will have about 6 spaces to mount tools to. But, I'm mounting all the tools on platforms and attaching the inside drawer slides to all of the tools so I can take them on and off as needed along with a plain solid platform if you're not using a tool in that spot. Using under the workbench for tool storage cabinet that will have outer drawer slides. Just a way to double or triple work space instead of multiple bases on wheels so you can move them around.

I had the same issue with miters. With the saw set in the work bench. So what I did to fix this was make it slide forward with some heavy duty sliders. Works good i can pull it forward when I need to make those steep miters. And push it back when I need to .

I recently purchased the 12” Ridgid R4222 model saw. I unboxed it, set it up on Ridgid MSUV and thought everything was great. I literally made two cuts and I started having a problem with the blade brake. The blade would not stop rotating. Not to mention it is a huge saw. I liked it, but I didn’t like having something wrong with it right from the get go, so I ended up returning it last week. I had been seeing videos for the Ridgid R4251 . It was on sale on HD website for $379 . The only problem was that it was out of stock and no idea when more would be in. Well long story short, I ended up looking one random day and saw 26 available. I thought I would sleep on it. I woke up to 6 being available and decided to pull the trigger, and boy am I glad I did. From the moment I took out the first piece ( material clamp ) , I knew it was just built different. I don’t know how to explain it. It is just solid. Everything was great right out of box. The glide motion is what everyone has said it is. Like butter… I could not be any happier with this saw. If you are contemplating getting either the R4222 or the R4251 . Get the R4251 . If you have already purchased the R4222… bring it back and get the R4251 . It is a whole different animal and I think Ridgid ( Delta ) hit it out of the park. I personally could care less about the dust collection ✌🏼. Others feel different . I can tell you one thing, that dust collection “issue” hasn’t translated to reduced sales that’s for sure. This saw was hard to find for me here in the North East.

Nice review 😊 Try this on these sawes: Make a under bevel cut across a wide board. Hint - the cut ain't 90 degree. 😂 The saw head is so heavy that the weight cause blade deflection. Which leads to blade kickback. This saw is dangerus to use. This is not an issue with festool KS120

Bro so glad you did this video, I happen to have the 12 inch Ridged waiting for me to buy when I get paid, I tossed around between the 12 and the 10 advantage of the 10 is interchangeable blades with my table saw. Maybe $100 cheaper might sway me some more lol not a tight wad but my last saw was a metabo 12 with zero back clearance like these, that was $500 someone got ( hope they hurt themselves with their ill-gotten gains lol. Take care and talk to you soon.

Thank you for the insightful review on both saws. This was exactly what I was looking for to help decide on which I wanted. On the crosscut length, I believe the claimed depth is based on tilting the work at about a 45* thus giving you the additional 3+ inches of work width. Give it a try and see if it adds up. Thanks again. Oh, and I love your shop! Great layout and love how organized and tidy everything is.

Thanks Travis! I've been looking at that Rigid 12" saw for a while. I've got a construction project starting at my house. I'm thinking I now need to pick one up. When I do I'll have to order your dust collection attachment.

You should consider reviewing the Ridgid R4231 which is a sleeper model that came out at the same time as the R4251/R4241 and is also made by Delta. It's a 12" miter and features a short slider (thus eliminating most of the blade deflection issues). All indications is that it's built on the same chassis as the R4251 and your dust chute is probably a direct fit. Not a bad deal for $349 (I paid $329 and I've seen it as low as $299).

Good information, I've was planning on getting the delta then they mysteriously disappeared and now reappeared as ridgid. But now home depot doesn't have them available again. So if when you're done doing your comparisons and building your dust chute designs and want to get rid of any of your saws I'll take first dibs on what you want to get rid of.

Your suggestion to keep it locked should be something more people notice. A huge percentage of us would be able to make almost all the cuts we need on a regular old non-sliding mitre saw. Cheaper, more accurate, lighter, and easier to keep tuned, non-sliders should be in more shops.

I agree with your observation but not 100% your conclusion. In "chop saw mode" and dialed in, my Bosh Slide makes great cuts. But I don't always need perfect cuts...sometimes I just need the convenience of getting close, especially when cutting long boards. Of course there are times when I need to break down boards that are 7-8 inches wide x 1 1/2" thick, and a non-slider won't do the job. I've long debated whether a non-sliding saw would be sufficient for me, and always conclude that the slider provides flexibility that is great to have when I need it.

I had the 10in Ridgid for 2 days and returned it for the 12in, because it seemed a bit deceptive that the max cross cut length advertised does require setting it into an extended mode. You remove the main fence, and place a sacrificial piece of 2x whatever onto the main platform to raise your piece up higher. Then There are 2 little tabs that rotate around, and a mini metal lip at the back of the circular part that act as the extended fence. Super happy with the saw.

@3:42 thanks for the detailed review. After working with DeWalt's (DW716XPS) shadow line, I don't think I could ever go back. I thought it was gimmicky at first (like those cheap lasers for drills) but it's a complete game changer. Edit: at the end. I *was* wondering why you had so many brand spanking new looking mitersaws. Can't wait for the comparison videos.

@EcoWorms Montreal Yeah, I have a nice blade from CMT. Works really well, although I miss the capacity of sliding miters. But as a DIY/Hobby guy, I can't justify another mitersaw when mine is working so well. And I wanted the blade that Spence of Insider Carpentry recommended, but again, can't justify it as a hobby guy. LOL

A number of DeWalt miter saws have the shadow line as well, they currently call it CUTLINE. My dad's 10+ year old sliding model has it, It works fantastic for lining up your cut perfectly.

I’ve been looking to purchase one of these for my new setup since i sold my 12 inch dewault. Thanks for making this video Travis! I’m a sucker for the Delta brand and since they see to make both, I’m sold on getting that one and getting one of your dust chutes to complete the setup! You’ll see my order in soon!

As of August 28, 2024, the Ridgid 4251 has been discontinued! Was able to get a great deal and bought the display model at Home Depot. Ridgid said they would sell me the missing parts that may have been lost during assembly by HD. Bought one of your custom chutes! Thanks!

Thank you! I'm gearing up to get my shop back in order after many (MANY) years of just being a catch all. My old chop saw had suffered under the Arizona sun even though it was in a shed. Poor thing snapped in half from the heat. The handle just self destructed. I was debating on fixing vs replacing. I believe you helped me make that choice. :)

Very nicely done. Great review. I would buy one IF I had lots of cross cuts to do, but I can use my custom made table saw sled for that also. My old 10" Delta Shopmaster works for the smaller items that I need. I may get one of these in the future though. Thanks
