Alaska is known for its abundant salmon fisheries, but few outsiders have ever heard of the yearly hooligan runs.
These fish earned the name "candlefish" from being so fat during spawning, with up to 15% of total body weight in fat, that if caught, dried, and strung on a wick, it can be burned as a candle.
Local subsistence fisherman Warren Jones is a father, a recent college grad, and a Marine Corps veteran who served with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance battalion as a scout from 2002 to 2006.
INDIE ALASKA is an original video series produced by Alaska Public Media in partnership with PBS Digital Studios. The videos capture the diverse and colorful lifestyles of everyday Alaskans at work and at play. Together, these stories present a fresh and authentic look at living in Alaska.

Holy shit... At 0:05 in the back round the black truck and the small aluminum boat is my friends boat and I am in the truck... I go fishing in 20 mile river(45 minutes out of anchorage) for dolly varden, pinks, silvers, and jacks. That is so crazy. The truck is my dads and the boat is our friends.

Hooligan are super good! I’m stark white and love them. They’re super great for canning, smoking, and frying. I spend most of the free time in summers gardening, fishing, and gathering. It helps incredibly for getting us through winter. My kids are learning these skills as well. Harvesting your own food with respect for the animals themselves and the environment is such a critical thing that our society has lost. When the grocery store closes, the fishermen and hunters will continue to survive!

+Doctor Dollars I salt 'em and let 'em set for a bit, I feel like it firms up what is otherwise kind of mooshy flesh. You can half-dry them too but it can't be too hot for that. Then roll them in flour (I add paprika) and fry them in hot oil just like you were doing fried chicken and when they are golden brown all around and stiff let them cool down and I eat them whole, some people like to strip out the spine. Can also split and dry them, if you like fish they make good dried fish. Brine in salt/brown sugar and smoke them with whatever you want, although cottonwood is best.
