I know and it hurts me so much. Luke is the epitome of never giving up and a reminder to look deeper into people than just their surface. He was supposed to learn from the mistakes of past Jedi and find that it’s possible to follow the will of the Force while staying true to yourself, much like he follows in a lot of his father’s footsteps before him. With the sequels it’s like all of that was thrown away.. even Mark Hamill was unhappy with what they did to Luke’s character. It’s okay though because we can still appreciate good characters and their messages in whatever way we want.

Exactly. It’s beautiful because he knows where his father fell short and he uses that to pick up the pieces and continue on as a better person because of it, for both of them. And Luke doesn’t claim to be some kind of hero of unreachable heights, in fact many say he remains in the shadow of what his father could have been. But Luke still remains true to who he is and his power to restore peace and right the wrongs of the past is truly realized. Luke has a green lightsaber and not a white one, and he takes much after his rebellious father. There is no one path to walk to reach balance. Everyone has their own place in the Force.

Luke represents his fathers redemption in the flesh. This moment in the trilogy is what redeems Vader, after his fall to darkness by the hands of Palpatine, by his manipulation and deceit through the death of Padme, his downfall to the dark side by the false hopes the Emperor fed to him that he could save her, only if he let himself be used as a tool. The moment Luke refuses the Emperor, the moment the emperor strikes him, the moment Vader throws the emperor into the abyss, that’s when Vader dies, and Anakin comes back to life, the loving father and husband he desperately wanted to be, but never was.
