By far the most informative gameplay I’ve seen yet, my first play through I’ve petered out in the mid game (Germany causing an age of plague didn’t help early on). I’m pretty confident in the next play through I’m about to start, more expansion!

12:11 "Severely under used power Local Reforms." Checks the comments of every KZbin video of this game and its people screeching at the content creator to use Local Reforms. Great explanation of the game Ursa. I will note that the Influence buff at the start is better than Culture. Influence bonus, first building Dolman, place town after Dolman gives you the big border expansion. Over the course of the game, Influence is a lot harder to get than Culture and while you notice it less, the QoL of expanding into additional tiles quicker is significantly better.

@@UrsaRyanneither is culture to be fair. You also had a great start with a lot of space especially into the woods. The fact you struggled with the tile growth to get to the deer at the start kind of solidifies this point. Also, you HAVE to stop using Raiders as a crutch. There is no universe where Raiders are “in the middle.” You’re huffing copium with that take lol. You had a pretty strong Wild Hunters opener and even a potential Naturalist (though there is 0 shot I pick them in GM). Raiders is just so broken that realistically it doesn’t even make the game fun lol. I think if you branch out off Raiders, you’ll learn a lot that comes from the struggle of not being able to steam roll the entire map. I know you’re an aggressive player in Civ, but I think you’d enjoy using the other 2 top NS in Mound Builders and Wild Hunters.

There is a super fun triple city start Mound Builders strat that abuses the insane regional efficiency bonuses you get from Age of Monuments. Wasn't this start perfect for Naturalists (with all your unimproved tiles and all that forest), bow hunters (had you had 3 deers + other tiles with maybe elephants) or even Olympians with all those tribal villages you could integrate as vassals for very cheap without chaos. I think those 3 were a better choice than the raiders. EDIT : Yeah, raiders are still very OP, they still allow you to conquer the whole map because raiders print raiders and heal all the time while moving super fast. They really need to nerf them! I think they should make them strong to raze and pillage cities, but not to conquer them. Like they could give you a lot of resources to your homeland, but not make vassals. Maybe also make Chaos event way harder to skip, like double the cost.

I think they worked so well because I was so aggressive in age 3 - I'll play other games to show off different strats. Raiders fall down massively against the actual AI, the window for their use is slow. Still, it's the easiest domain to level up on

For clarity's sake I would like to say that barbarian camps may be built by the humblest of barbarians if I am not gravely mislead.I typically find they are spawning on islands off the coast, landing on fog of war and having themselves a barn builder.

24:12 I died on the inside when you didn't take the pioneer. The outpost can be absorbed for a level 2 town which is already is 25 engineering XP saved. The pioneer itself is another 24 XP. You could have just dropped that in the middle of the forest for a 5 forest lumber town that could have already been specialized while focusing your border growth through the forest as quickly as possible which is your highest influence cost around you. The fact the the outpost already has the border growth around it just speeds up the border expansion process immensely.

I would have done the same. There is a lot of things I would have done differently, like not going for the raiders, it was a very good start to either go Bow Hunters, Naturalists (work on forest and unproved tiles... which is Ursa whole starting area), or even Olympians as there are many tribal villages all around you could grab for cheap!

I really hope the devs buff the clay production line. Even if they keep the claypit the same as it is now, they need to buff the bricks and the brick producing buildings. Production is everything, as production becomes research and improvement points, but you cannot turn improvement points into research or other resources, so getting flat production from tiles is better than getting improvement points. Lumber is already better than clay by virtue of that. Then the kiln only turns 1 clay into 1 brick, which is really bad. It should be 3 clay into 3 brick same as the lumber production chain. Then the upgraded version should do something like 4 or 6 and have an added benefit on top to make it a good upgrade. Maybe flat production, maybe more engineering points, just anything to make it better than it is now. Anyway, with how strong vassals are at the moment, none of that would really matter much lmao!

Yes! Lots of different tactics in this game = ) Also wide and tall isn't the only aspect to think about in this game - domain vs vassal is the other. So you can go super wide with only one domain or you can have lots of huge domains but no vassals. It's cool!

Id imagine a nerf to this would be compounding unrest and/or chaos increases based on the amount of vassals and population you have. Also making the Oath to fealty only work up to your regional level. It make it a more realistic feudal system that way.

I had deffo taken the pioner. Not only is it instantly worth 24 xp, but the xp-cost of pioners scale, meaning there is a finite number of pioners you get. Also if you are not looking to defend an early outpost, you instantly get a level 2 town, which can be placed further out than your town with create town option (which you later have to upgrade at more than 20 enginering xp). All that considered outposts are just generally the most broken thing in the game (along with stuff like bowhunters, utility ships etc), because you get resources without investment of workforce. You're still decend at the game though ;)

Yes, this is a strat I actually picked up during this run! I'm still not 100% convinced - I think keeping outposts till late game for castles is a strat, and when you eat them into towns they are gone forever - but early game it might be worth it

Finally someone else who realized how OP the +1 culture start is because of local reform spamming. Not sure I agree with the +1 knowledge over +1 improvement point government choice though. That improvement point takes you from 1 to 3 per turn under local reforms. Even if you wanted to wait on the hunting camp or whatever you could have quickly added foresters, completing the dolman faster to unlock deer tiles to upgrade the hunting on. And then you can always bank some waiting for a bronze age tech if needed. This also helps you build buildings to get knowledge or gov points to get the +1 knowledge and gov reform techs faster. If you needed military more desperately this is definitely the play.

I prefer to tech up faster to unlock the better buildings or improvements but I get the point soon after. Early game often with the local reforms, your city is pretty much at 200% without the camps! Save the points till you need them to grow = )

I think a good strategy for killing scouts with an army is to select the entire army except one unit, attack the scout with the army, and then attack it again with the one unit. The scout always runs away from the first battle, but it should die instantly in the second due to being out of morale

Those vassels are broken 😂 I wish that as city population grew past certain thresholds it expanded into other tiles around it reducing their yields. Or maybe cities grew to tiles near ocean or rivers gobbling ip the tiles as it goes. Seems like for eras it should be 3 techs and a total of past era techs like 16 of 20 from past eras so you arent skipping techs entirely. Just some thoughts from watching.

With difficulty!! You can ask for open borders with the ai but if you're not on good terms with them it migght be tough. Declaring war on the ai would also let you move through Best advice to give is to build a few city guard to suppress the protests a bit to stop it flipping in the first place!

As for what it is, I really do think it's a massive improvement on BE that honestly I feel like is the definitive version of the game (even if that is Civ 5 in space)

Is it just me or does this game just seem to be trying too hard? It doesn't seem to play nearly as nice as civ with too many mechanics that don't interlace well and some don't even seem to be relevant at all and it also looks horrible. Humankind atleast looked really promising but this.. I think I'll stick with civ
