Fred Sokolow is such a great teacher! I have lots of his videos, and they are all great! Thanks Fred and Stephan for sharing these wonderful lessons.

@JohnnyReb2009 He talks about this in the DVD. The finger picks make it possible to play louder, and it is a good idea to start getting used to them. You can still play without them. The DVD is great by the way. It's called "Travis Picking for Beginners". I rented it from Netflix, and it really helped me to de-couple my thumb (bass), from my fingers (melody). I hope this helps.

Great teaching Fred, the best I've found so far, so I've bought the DVD and now practising the moves. The DVD is very helpful and breaks it all down to the basic steps, so you just have to do what he says.

The only problem I've had, is to try a find a cheap electric accoustic with a wide nut to get a clean sound. At the moment I've had to use a capo and detune on the first fret. The guitar I wanted was a Gretsch 5120 but the nut's too narrow at 1 11/16's.

Is it 'Not made by hand' or 'not made by man'?

Either way.

I struggle a LOT with the right hand on this song (and many others like it) -- wish this video went into a bit more how to drill that stuff into you. And it's extra frustrating because if you try to search for more tutorials you get a thousand 'intro to travis picking' videos that are doing baby stuff in comparison to what the Master was up to lol

Finger picks are a good option, but I've seen some great pickers who use only a thumbpick, and some sensational pickers who use only "bare meat". So take your pick!
