I am a union member who just received an EEOC right to sue letter. What comes next for me?

I personally know someone a woman whom was a union member and sued for Sexual Harassment. She had to obtain her own legal council (union failed to help her) the union and company actually stood together against her. She prevailed on appeal with her suit and did quite well $$$ and she also got her job back. So it's possible..

The defendant did not respond to my federal court filing. My attorney is now filing for a default judgment. Is this in my favor? If so, how long does a settlement usually take in situations like this? Why would Defendant not respond? They have millions of dollars in assets, liability insurance, and contracts, so I am not worried about the availability of settlement funds even if I have to pursue collections.
