When I saw the title, I knew it was PMV. Honest question. If you have seen birds vaccinated for PMV what is the benefit of vaccination for PMV. Does it lessen the likelihood of it spreading throughout your flock if you vaccinate for it & 1 gets it?

Occasionally a pigeon will get PMV even if vaccinated but it will not spread though out the loft. Maybe only one in 100 will be effected if they have been vaccinated previously for PMV. I also do not vaccinate the really old pigeons once they are seven or eight years old. Those pigeons have been vaccinated so many times in their lives it is not needed.

Frank, have you ever had a run in with the avian herpes virus in your birds? I had it towards the end of breeding season last year, didn't know what it was so I sent a few birds to K-State vet clinic, the top veterinary school in the nation and that is what it came back for. No vaccination I have seen for it...thoughts?

Hi Matt, I have seen Herpes in the pigeons and most pigeons have been exposed and it does show at the end of breeding season. You can buy a Herpes PMV combination vaccine at Siegel. Good stuff and it does help. I have witnessed this years ago in some of my babies late in the season. The last many years they may have built up an immunity or maybe it was the occasional vaccination with Herpes Vaccine. The vaccinated or exposed breeders will pass this immunity to the young.

Ppmv is horrible but I am way more scared of cocidiosis.. I vaccinate against ppmv every year after losing 17 birds to it

Where do you live and why Coccidiosis. I have not treated for coccidiosis in probably 20 or more years. Why is this a problem for you?
