In real life, the planet rotates at something like 40,000mph. So Superman flying around the Earth backwards would reverse its magnetic polarity and cause internal frictional superheating from the mantle and core rubbing against each other in opposite directions, the tectonic plates would smash against each other violently, causing a single global earthquake and a massive tidal wave composed of every body of water on the planet, every living thing would either slam into the atmosphere at 80,000mph, explode from violent pressure changes, or burn to death at escape velocity, the atmosphere would collapse in on itself, and the Earth would eventually turn into a second sun, potentially affecting the planetary motions of the rest of our solar system in inconceivable ways. Good job, HERO.... Time travel, my ass.

Here's the thing about Superman 2. He wasn't making the planet spin backwards, that was just a representation of the passage of time from superman's point of view. He was flying faster than the speed of light which according to the theory of relativity causes you to travel back in time. That he knew the moment to stop I would say is due to his incredible vision and the fact that the speed of light is constant. (So even when you're moving the speed of light, light is coming towards you at the speed of light relative to you in all directions.) Edit: Source: I'm an astronomy nerd that once got a perfect score on a kahoots quiz about space. (Lol)
@Misakyz4 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, but theres a small problem. If his moving faster then light, then he wont be able to see anything right? no matter how good of vision he has. Since vision is the reflect of light on everything around us.
@Pyriana4 жыл бұрын
@@Misakyz light moves relative to you so if you are on a train moving the speed of light and shine a light forward you'll see the light moving away from you at the speed of light. At the same time, someone not on the train will see the light you shine move as fast as the train.

On the semi-discussion around 15:45 (in a level I'm almost certain I've seen before), I want to say that I much prefer a content style like yours, Carl, DGR, to what I've watched of LilKirbs While the Mario gameplay is amazing, and what got me into the channels (although DGR was because of a different game), I enjoy watching them for the person more than the content. Your discussions and comments, Carl's blindness, DGR's failings to be wholesome and his ability to laugh anything off, and it's why when I watch Panga, I sort of prefer his multiplayer videos to the rest (the rest of his stuff is good, but the banter he creates sometimes is just more enjoyable). I honestly wish I had the time in life to watch all you guys live, but due to the suckyness of timezones and uni (which I'm totally not slacking off an assignment due tonight to watch and write this), I rarely can. I've been to a couple of your streams, a couple of Carls, I think one of DGRs, and the banter and community between streamer and chat is so amazing. But alongside that, seeing the failure in levels, the development and learning, it makes the videos much more enjoyable than just "here's a level"

I think Superman 2 is misunderstood a lot. Most people seem to see it as: Superman flies really fast -> Causes the world to spin backwards -> Somehow this causes backwards time travel? But I think this makes much more sense: Superman flies really fast -> Superman travels backwards through time -> We perceive the world to be spinning backwards because we are watching time flow backwards
@jst254 жыл бұрын
It's Superman 1, not two. And he has to restart the rotation of the Earth because the movie makes it abundantly clear that Superman is messing with the Earth's rotation, not that it's his POV. That's just a silly explanation someone came up with 30 years after the movie that people read on the internet and repeat without actually watching it.

Read a couple books recently where the main character, named Miles, actually kills villains using advanced tech. A hero in another city, though, is named The Shadow Knight and is clearly a Batman figure, whose main adversary is called The Maniac. When Miles comes to town & kills a number of villains all at once at a facility similar to Arkham Asylum, The SK loses his mind. He finally admits to himself that he is playing the ultimate "game" with the villains, with an alleged set of "rules" which *must* be followed, and he is so worried about The Maniac's well-being that he finally shrugs off his code, deciding that _Miles_ is the one who needs to die! Would be really interesting to see DC portray Batman under similar conditions, to explore how he would react to someone who has killed multiple villains in a short period of time. Lock-Up and Red Hood are the closest they've gotten to that storyline, to the best of my limited knowledge.

About the superman thing, it's really poorly explained but I think what's being depicted is he's flying back in time, not turning back time. So he's still solving all the problems he solved the first time around, but now he can save Lois too. Admittedly this is really poorly setup, only one line from his dad during the rocketship trip to earth, but it's slightly less stupid than you think.

That's not what happens in Superman 2. What I think is supposed to happen is that Superman travels faster than light, which, if you're a follower of Einstein, means Superman is actually travelling back in time. I mean, it's still impossible, but not for the reasons you thought as a kid. Keep in mind, this was back in the 80s when blockbuster movies didn't hire science consultants, like when Nolan hired Kip Thorne for Interstellar.

Superman didn't fly around the Earth until it spins backwards which somehow reverses time, he flies around the Earth so fast he exceeds the speed of light. This causes him to travel backwards in time, which then makes the Earth appear to spin backwards to him, because he's going backwards through time.
@AlexanderQ6894 жыл бұрын
The take on Superman's time reversal that I like is that he travels fast enough to travel back in time; the fact that he happens to be going around the Earth & it looks like he's physically turning it around is irrelevant but simply the artists way of showing us that he's traveling through time. Whether or not it's possible to go fast enough to travel back in time is debatable, but it's easier to digest that maybe Superman is capable of doing something we only have theories about.
@jst254 жыл бұрын
Then why does Superman have to restart the rotation of the Earth? The movie was clear that he was changing the direction of the Earth's rotation. Thirty years later people who hadn't seen the movie or at least hadn't seen it for a long invented the "the reversed spin is Superman's POV" theory, forgetting half the details from that part of the movie.

Batman doesn't keep the villains alive so he'll have something to do. He refrains from killing them so he can still convince himself he's different than them. Because at the end of the day, he's a psychologically damaged person in a costume breaking the law just like the rest of them. But his moral justification allows him to maintain a sense of righteousness in his "ends justify the means" approach in which he unilaterally appoints himself judge and jury...but not executioner.

The problem with Nolan Batmans is that they got DC on making all their movies in this dark gritty realish world. Which works for Batman to a degree. But sucks the life out of all the other heroes. while it is fun to occasionally see dark and gritty versions of our favorite heroes. Like in watchmen. I can just about guarantee that most people when they go to see a super hero movie they want the fun bright versions we often get in the comics. Which is something Marvel gets and DC animated has known for a long time. But DC live action was very slow to learn.
