I will never understand this part of being worried/angry about a celebrity dating. Otherwise, we're still behind the times when it comes to worrying about other people's sexuality.
@greyscalesx2 жыл бұрын
Because of their culture. The word idol is already weird to put on a human being. These ppl are being fantasied about, that's what they sell. Most of that public, is straight women. When they find out the idol is gay or not single, it destroys that fantasy about being their crush/love interest. And they are no longer desirable. Some ppl even feel betrayed. But it happens too if the image they sell publicly, for example being cutesy, gets exposed to be fake. Ppl feel tricked. Here in western culture a singer is admired about their music. ppl rather act betrayed if they change said music calling them sell outs. Same with acting, ppl feel betrayed if a actor who has roles where they are often hero's and heartthrobs turn out to be grumpy or have completely different image of what they portrayed. If you work in entertainment, you are a product and thus objectified and not seen as a person anymore. Ppl in the entertainment industry gain alot of money but the expectations are astronomical.

@greyscalesx2 жыл бұрын
@@finnrogue9435 Westerners calling other ppl's culture not advanced is downright condescending and racist. Their culture is different. Nothing to do with being advanced or not. It's because of how relationships are seen. But you can look that up yourself. Also ppl here in western culture also get mad over celebrities beefs and love lives too. It's just being mad for different reasons. Reality tv, gossip rags, social media, paparazzi, litteraly still exist bc they have high demand/watch rates. Every society has it's merits and demerits and is made of how it historically evolved. It's hypocritical at best to look down on how other society evolved when western society made advancements mainly by colonialism and coasting by and building countries on stolen resources and technological inventions of others.

I've read a lot that international fans perceptions of how popular any idol or group might be in Korea doesn't usually match up with reality. From what I've heard, Koreans tend to lean towards solo ballad singers, they're not really that into pop music and Kpop is kind of brushed off to be for young kids and middle school kids. They also tend to really not know much about what goes on with the Kpop scene unless it's an artist under a Big 3 company and even then they might only know the group name or have heard a song or two and not know more.
@andtipidee2 жыл бұрын
Understand that Korean is a conservative country. Many are unsupportive of the community (of course, not the individuals in this video). So Holland and other LGBTQ+ people from the K-Pop community are often hindered. It is hard to gain fame and support. Being the “first” doesn’t mean you’ll gain fame easily.

@Solip_i2 жыл бұрын
You have the answer in your comment actually. They re not only fans of their music.. they re obsessed with these idols. They re possessive bc idols are « created » for them unfortunately. They way idols, dress, looks, act, everything is made up by their agency, it’s a persona. This is really unhealthy.

Ever heard of Selena Perez? A fan invaded her privacy and eventually killed her.
@andtipidee2 жыл бұрын
Fans invade their idols’ privacy because they want to feel a “closer connection” with them (like an obsessive stalker). The more they know about them, the more they feel “special” or “important” to their favorite idol. And when they date, they feel an inferiority complex. It’s also sad to realize agencies know this. They want idols to form a closer bond with their fans to gain money and fame more easily. That’s why they encourage building up a fanbase and leaking their privacy. It’s all dirty business.

I don't really care at all if an idol it's gay or if she has a girlfriend or she's married, the only things I worry about idols it's that they stay healthy (mentally and physically), their appearances in TV shows and YT series/videos and being able to create amazing music, that's all I need from them.
@crazyowlgirlcncowner2 жыл бұрын
Which is how it should be, in my opinion. Actually i think a lot of idols would benefit from being in relationships because they can have someone to support and understand them. And it's sad that they have to give up their dreams of forming a family in order to be an artist.
@johnnyj2d32 жыл бұрын
@@crazyowlgirlcncowner exactly! @Joziahwasright2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I mean we should all just be here for they're music and talents. Fans need to stop acting as if the idol is gonna marry or date because there's a really low (and I mean really low) chances of that happening. Just pay attention to your own life and appreciate their work as an artist 🤷♂️ You shouldn't care about their sexuality(because that's for them to know unless they want to announce/come out) and whatever just focus on the music they produce
@dandm27182 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed. Idols is not a possession or real boy friend.
@johnnyj2d32 жыл бұрын
@@Joziahwasright exactly. Of course you're gonna like some idols physically and also their personality, that is not the problem, we all are human and can feel attracted to anyone by his/her looks and personality (myself, for example, I can say that I completely love how Yunjin from Le Sserafim and Yuqi from (G)I-DLE are and of course I find them attractive), the problem starts when you become obsessed by them and become a jerk with them when they are dating someone... My point is: fall in love with whoever you want, that's something human and that can happen but please, if you really want them to be happy (as you always claim by being a fan), then show them your support and love when they marry someone or when they are dating someone, they chose that person for a reason and we have to support them and feel happy for them! 💪🏻✨ Same goes for when they say they are lesbian or gay, support them and feel proud of them by being able to say it out loud because we know how things still are in Korea about that subject.

@@elenasantoro2404 I mean, yeah that’s better in a way, cause it breaks some taboo’s, but let’s be honest, a lot of people also watch same sex relationship dramas cause they fetishize them, not exactly because they support the community. Like men with lesbians, or fans with gay shipping. A sickening amount of BL is about fetishizing and sexualizing gay relationships over actually representing them. I’m queer and I used to read/watch (mostly webtoons/ff) a lot of BL at first (cause it didn’t have misogyny), but like 90% are beyond toxic and so clearly sexualized/fetishized. I had to stop, it made me so mad. Pretty much the more abusive and unhealthy relationship was, the more popular story got (from my experience). So I just hope those shows will have a good representation, rather than another thing for audience to fantasize about (didn’t watch that many lately, so maybe they are good :))

several Kpop singers are gay and in huge famous groups. Many are depressed, suffer from loneliness and anxiety due to it. Sadly some have killed themselves. Due to SK's stance on gay rights they keep hidden. So sad and I hope one day SK will join the rest of the world on equality. As a fan your job is to listen to their music, watch their shows, buy their music and merch, stream. NOT dictate who they date and when. Not be up in their personal life. Only in Kpop do you see such and extreme interest in the personal lives of artist. In America when a singer dates we are happy for them and support them and if they break up we get mad at their ex with them lol

He stands out there every single day being a magnet for hate and disdain and judgment (even more so than every other idol, because lbr, it's an innately toxic environment) while just trying to live his life being true to himself and making art. All while essentially on his own, without fellow queer idols standing alongside him to provide support or strength in numbers or a united front or even just a cushion against the hateful spotlight. Someday queer idols and other artists will be safe to be out, and I hope when that time finally comes, people will remember that Holland laid some of the very first pavers on that path. He takes the hits rn so later down the line, others won't have to. He shouldn't have to either, but the world can really suck sometimes.

Yes That's right like still worry about sexuality and coming out in Korea although some are wide open but not too much and that's his goal is to know him more as what he is, either her or him is the fact that I'm glad that it's courageous enough as Korean society is somehow like disclosed like it pinpoints from this video. Holland is slaving every moment. Pretty and handsome.

When you rlly think about it their are probably other men in boy groups that are gay but just don't admit it or come out about it. Holland is brave for doing so LITERALLY, especially in korea!!!

LOVE him!!!! I will never understand why these labels have the UNREALISTIC ban on idols dating. They're humans, many of them being so young, that STILL have a ways to mature. To experience the stages in human development that we all must go through. Sexuality being a major one. Hell, many people still don't come to the realization of their sexuality until later in life, so with that being said, it DOES NOT MATTER to me what an idol's sexuality is because that is not a measure of their worth!! 💖🏳️🌈💖

It sadens me that not only are homosexuals still treated this way in Korea, what sadens me the most is, that the culture they live in teach them from youth that treating them like that is ok. This guy had a lot of curage to come out before debut and i admire him deeply. I wish more people would do this in a quest to normalize LGBT, because Korea must feel like prison for them in a way. I realy hope one day Korea join the club and realize that different sexuality is not a disease or political statement, but completely normal natural thing and people who hapen to be this way deserve the same amount of respect as anyone else. Human beings should never be judged by sexuality. I dont even understand how this is not self evident truth everywhere... I like so many things about Korea, but these social dogmas alone infuriateme. Its sad to see at times idols from Korea, who are obviously gay, to pretend something else all the time, wearing a mask of lies in a fear, that their true self image would end their career entirely.

to people wondering why we should care about an idol's sexuality: in a perfect world, it shouldn't matter! it shouldn't matter that holland is gay, it shouldn't be novel or special. however, we DO NOT live in a perfect world and queerness is still frowned upon, discriminated against, and criminalized in most of the world. having pop culture figures be openly queer is huge in terms of representation and visibility for both gay kids like me and the international queer community as a whole. it reminds the general public and law makers that We Are Here! and We Have A Voice! and We Matter! Listen To Us. it also is so deeply meaningful and inspiring to be able to look at my favorite genres of music and media and see people like me working to bring themselves and their community into the spotlight. ignoring or overlooking holland being gay is doing a disservice to him and his experiences as well as the experiences of queer people everywhere. you can't separate someone's identity from them- this is doubly true in his industry! as an artist, his work is inseparable from who he is- we all create through the lens of our own person. you will not be able to truly appreciate him or his music without acknowledging his identity and contextualizing what it means for him to be an openly gay kpop idol. love you, holland!! harling will support you always
