I prefer the alternate ending. The theatrical ending is kind of the expected action movie ending where he goes out in sacrifice. The alternate ending turns the whole story on its head. Instead of being the savior of mankind, it turns out that humanity has evolved into the Darkseekers, and Neville's legend is that of a serial killer to them, hunting them by day when they're at their most vulnerable. Abducting and experimenting on them. Even keeping a wall collage of all of his victims. It drastically changes the tone from him being a brave survivor, to him being an absolute monster in their world.

Doesn’t exactly sound like a step in _evolution,_ though, if it leaves us inevitably _vulnerable_ for several hours a day, every single day.

That was actually the first ending and was closer to the book of the same name. However it performed poorly among test audiences, so the studio demanded that other more generic ending be created and used instead.

@@pmpowalisz Yeah, that part was disappointing. I remember seeing it in the theatre with my wife, and we walked out and I asked how she liked the movie. She kinda paused for a minute and was like "I dont know about the ending..." which immediately affirmed my feeling that what they had been leading up to didnt feel right for the story. We went online soon as we got home and found that there was indeed an alternate ending, and found that twist to be far more satisfying. But we're probably weirdos, what the hell do I know :)

On the original dvd there was a storyboard and commentary explaining that those who are infected don’t know it. They think normal people are infected. That’s why they copied Neville and set up traps etc. It is a weird turn of events because as infected you see other infected as normal people and normal people you see as infected. I’m wondering if that’s what they are focusing on for the sequel.

I’ve been reading my way through the novel. It was first published in ’54. Its ending is _very_ different. There’s the _typical_ brand of hemocytes that Neville deals with for about three years, then a whole _new_ variety comes along that wipes out the originals.

I prefer the alternate ending because it shows how Neville's isolation led to his misinterpretation of the creature's behavior as animalistic and lacking any traces of humanity, when all along the male was simply aggressive because Neville took away his mate. Had Neville not been alone so long, he might've recognized it for what it was, but him lacking real human contact did such a number on him that he missed what was staring him in the face. The alternate ending also makes it clear that the creature set the trap for Neville and was indeed still intelligent enough to do so. Him using his hand to draw the butterfly on the glass to tell Neville what he wanted helps show us that. And you still see that the cure was slowly working. They are allegedly using this ending for the sequel with Michael B. Jordan.

Another horror film, "The Divide" (2011) starring Michael Biehn (Reese from Terminator). Its about survivors of a nuclear attack on NYC. The film never explains the attack, but based on the Hazmat suits seen later in the film, a deadly virus got loose and the only way to contain it was to bomb the entire city. The survivors flee to a fallout shelter equipped Apartment building basement.

I think you both got your wish. Magy said she wanted the movie to be more action and Laura said she wanted the movie to be more horror. Well, this movie had both genres pushed hard and delivered to you both. Magy, there is a great all-lady cast in a nice British horror (very scary) movie titled "The Descent" (2005) starring Natalie Mendoza and Shauna Macdonald (the English actress, not the Canadian actress) and the plot is about a group of young, adventurous, ladies that go caving in the Appalachian mountains in Tennessee (I live very close to that location) and, well, I'll just say their fun adventure does not gto as planned. The Descent is absolutely one of my, and my mother's, favorite (horror) movies. We both highly recommend. Magy, do not watch The Descent alone. In fact, you probably will have Laura spend the night with you. Not making fun, but I seen you react to The Conjuring and you said you are easily scared; so if you watch The Descent, be ready... ...And "The Descent 2" is just as good and scary as the first. Hint Hint.

Quite the unique "horror" movie - a few jumpscares that make you jump in your seat - but a lot of subtle things that make for a much more disturbing element than the horror scenes: 1. The "miracle cancer treatment" gave everyone super rabies - Robert running numbers by Anna - is a terrifying scene, explaining how most of Earth's population died and then most of the survivors turned into monsters, hunting the rest down. 2. Robert can very well be seen as the "villain" of the story from the infected people's perspective - this concept is explored much better in the director's cut ending, seeing all the pics of the dead infected that Robert experimented on. 3. The loneliness factor - being alone for 3 years clearly messed with Robert - "This is ground 0" , "I can fix this" , "I can cure everyone" and other lines which reveal just how mentally broken he is by all the time spent alone, or rather in the company of his dog which obviously doesn't fullfill him socially as another human being could. The scene with Fred the mannequin is so heartbreaking and the "please say hello to me" scene after he lost Sam can make anyone bawl their eyes out. 4. The little implied signs of "the divine" - Anna's story and belief in God, the butterfly recurring theme and symbols we see especially in the alternate ending - this all shocks Robert, a scientist, to his core. Robert's relationship with Sam, all the little interactions and his dialogue with the dog, it just builds our attachment to Sam and when the inevitable scene comes along - it crushes our hearts. Watching Robert look for supplies, his attempts at hunting, all the insanely beautiful shots with a New York overrun by nature - it all is highly entertaining and a pleasure to watch. On the other hand, we slowly see the flashbacks of Robert's past life, how hard he fought to get his family to safety, how they died in front of his eyes and to twist the emotional knife in our hearts - a little puppy Sam, given to Robert by his own daughter. The 2 endings are pretty divisive - you're right, Magy, the theatrical cut one has much more emotional impact - Robert fullfills his purpose, finally discovers a cure and makes sure Anna and the kid have the best chance of escaping with the cure, potentially saving mankind in the process. The alternate ending is much more in tune with "we can milk a sequel out of this bad boy" but it also carries a much darker implication - Robert has to live with the knowledge that he is a "monster" himself, even if it's out of neccessity - despite him mentioning earlier in the movie how the infected lost all elements that made them human, in the end we see how they raided Robert's home so the leader could save his companion, the latest of Robert's test subjects. In this alternate ending there's no indication that Robert discovered the cure and for all intents and purposes he lost all the work when his home was destroyed. Thank you for the beautiful reaction, commentary and discussion, you did a fantastic job ❤

For clarity, the second ending you saw was the original ending. Test audiences didn't care for it so they made a new ending (where he creates the cure). However, as you noted the movie makes a lot more sense with the original ending, though you did seem to prefer the theatrical ending. All the foreshadowing pointed to the original ending though, and when I first saw it, I saw the theatrical release version and was very confused and it felt empty to me. I really like the reveal that the hero of the movie was in fact a villain without realizing it.

I love Laura, and it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, the death of the dog was such a shock to me at the time that the rest of the story was irrelevant to me. Pets have a problem surviving in the wild because they have been modified by us humans through selective breeding. That's why we are responsible for our "smaller brothers" as Grey Owl (real name Archibald Stansfeld Belaney) said. Maybe it's not human but I can ignore the death of a human more than an innocent being that's why I don't like this movie.

Fact: The movie is based on the book with the same name. And although it is quite faithful in almost everything, they changed the ending completely and sadly this destroys the meaning of the story and the name it bears. In the original story, Will Smith's character really is the last human on Earth and there is no one left like him. When he finds a girl, who seems to be like him, in reality they are tricking him so that she infiltrates and can destroy his defenses from the inside and thus the new race will kill him. When he is cornered, these beings are infinitely more intelligent in the book and as if they can speak, they tell him that for them, he is the monster and that their children are afraid of him and that when he dies they will continue telling the story of the nightmare that It was for them and when they tell him to say his last words before killing him, the protagonist realizes that he has transformed into something that goes beyond, that his story would be told for generations as if he were a species of COCO or Baba Yaga, so he sees them directly before they untie him and tells them: "I am legend"

1. Where did he go to get that?. 3. This film is mostly a remake of "The Last Man On Earth" and "The Omega Man" staring Charlton Heston. 4. The wild animals escaped from the Manhattan Zoo. 5. He was saving the bacon for Samantha. 6. There's speculation that he's the bad guy because he's the hunter now. 7. I absolutely fell in love/LUST with Alice Braga after I saw this movie. 8. The female was the leader's squeeze. 9. I prefer the ending where he sacrifices himself.
