That's what "I Am Legend" means. From the perspective of the infected, he is the terror in (their) night, he comes when they're asleep, and kidnaps their loved ones.

But who's consciousness the dark seekers have? Is it the same person's mind before the infection but deciding to want to live as a dark seeker, or did the virus hijack the mind/create a new consciousness separate from the host's? Because if it's the latter, Neville is definitely in the right to want to cure and restore the original person's mind and body. Even if it's still the host's mind, the virus would definitely be affecting it by a lot and try to preserve itself. I would be more sympathetic to the seekers if they were born like that, but they weren't and the mind was forcefully overtaken.

For what the movie had established up to the alternate ending the original ending made more sense. In my humble opinion. I just never thought humans would hand the planet over to vampires. We humans would fight to the end for our planet. In this case to find a cure.

I like how he becomes the new monster for a new species, but I was always confused by how the 'living' vampires in the novel. I get that there are two different versions of vampires: one is truly undead and the other is living. But wouldn't the ones who are living have memories of their time as regular humans? And why hadn't Neville run across them if they could stand sunlight for a short amount of time before? They can communicate and act more human, as the woman Ruth was able to. This is why I prefer the explanation given in the alternate ending of the movie. The new society of vampires are truly new and clearly don't remember their time as humans, and they cannot go into sunlight. In fact, Neville discovering that they have regained human intelligence is hinting that it's only happened recently, which means this is the very first encounter.

Also the least like the book. It's a zombie movie that they slapped the title on. In the book it's a new society of intelligent vampires (though there are mindless vampires who were not alive when they became vampires which the intelligent vampires also hunt). It asks the question, if everyone on the planet is a vampire and the last human spends his days killing them while they sleep, then who is the real monster of the story? Is he now to vampires what vampires once were to humans? At least the alternate ending hints at that. But the movie just takes too many liberties for my taste. I miss the actual dialogue with the infected that is present in the previous versions. After two versions, I was hoping we'd get the definitive version. Instead, we got the version that most disregards the book. The 1964 version starring Vincent Price, The Last Man on Earth, is the closest to the novel. Though Price is miscast as Neville. Even The Omega Man is closer to the book than the Will Smith version.

If I'm not mistaken, there were undead (zombie) vampires and, um, not undead (intelligent) vampires. At the end of the book the intelligent vampires were wiping out the undead ones that would surround Robert's house every night... I wish this movie had included the experiments Robert was doing on the undead ones he was capturing. My favorite was that most of them had an aversion to seeing the crucifix, just like traditional vampire folklore, but his neighbor didn't. Then he remembered his neighbor was Jewish before he turned, got out a Star of David and it reacted as if it was seeing a crucifix. Really cool idea making a traditional vampire weakness essentially a psychosomatic remnant of the original personality/faith.

I'd say this alternate ending is closer to the novel than the theatrical ending, but even it is quite different from the book. The title "I Am Legend" refers to Robert Neville and his relation to the creatures, and the role reversal that occurs when creatures of myth such as vampires have taken over the world and have become the norm. To us, vampires are beings of legend. But in this juxtaposed world, Neville has become the legend to this race of vampiric beings. The novel was really one of those trailblazing works that attempted to deconstruct creatures of fiction and fantasy in an analytical and even scientific way, as Nevile spends much of the book trying to determine if this vampiric state is caused by a biological pathogen like bacteria or a virus, and devise explanations for things like why vampires avoid sunlight and crosses and why a stake through the heart kills them.

Basically does the original person choosing to stay and live as a dark seeker, or the virus created separate consciousness and forcing the person to be a dark seeker? Because if the dark seeker's consciousness is a completely separate one from the normal person, I would definitely agree with Neville trying to apply a cure and restore the mind of the person since the virus is literally hijacking someone else's mind and body and people didn't choose that, it's not like they were born like this.

It doesn't work because the movie didn't adapt the story properly. By setting the infected up as the clear monsters, the alternate ending (thematically more aligned with the actual ending of the book) doesn't make sense. That's why they changed it to the theatrical ending. Had they stuck closer to the source material the real (alternate) ending not only makes more sense but is better. The infected were evolving and had begun to create their own society. Robert Neville was their legend. The monster that could walk in the sun and hunted and killed them. They had grown to fear him and they couldn't communicate with him either. Him taking the Alpha's mate was the straw that broke the camel's back. It's only at the end when he realizes that he became their boogeyman that he sees the truth in them. That they're evolving and that their attacks on him are justified because those are the same feelings any normal human would have. I enjoy the alternate ending with the context of the actual story in the background. Good movie but fails to capture the essence of the actual book.

So interesting fun facts that I pulled from different sources that had the same information: While initially released as book-accurate... the "alternate ending" was removed from the theatrical cut due to negative response from initial test screening audiences. Ironically, there is a plans for a sequel for this movie that would consider the "alternative" ending to be the canonical one. The creators also wanted to create a prequel to the movie and depict what led up to this movie; but that prequel, so far, has not been green lit. The sequel has been green lit but no word on when it'll be made (let alone a release date).

Watching the theatrical release when it came out was a totally different experience. I still think it made for a good movie, but definitely agree with this as the preferred one!

so, IDK if you guys are gonna talk about this or know it, but this is a remake of a movie that was already remade in the 1970s. The first one came out in black and white in the 1960's with the main character being played by the infamously awesome guy Vincent Price (Last Man on Earth) then the second remake (The Omega Man) also starred an awesome actor by the name of Charlton Heston.

I love the original novel, and it even has some dry, dark humor in it. (Neville thinking "Have a drink, men, this one's really on me" when being attacked by vampires trying to suck him dry probably being my favorite line.)

I can relate to the mannequin's being set up so it feels like you're having interactions with other people. The first 3 months of COVID, i was 1 of about 6 people that was deemed "essential" and had clearance to be inside a 32 floor building Monday thru Friday. I contemplated going to the looted clothing store around the corner and setting up some mannequin's throughout the parts of the building i frequented. It's amazing the mental impact that isolation can have on a person!

7:34 I haven't read Richard Matheson's original book (I Am Legend) yet, but I know this story has been adapted into movies 3 different times. The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971), and I Am Legend (2007). In the first adaptation, they referred to them as vampires. Even though their behavior was clearly closer to zombies. But from the vampire thing they also got a sensitivity to sunlight, which is why they are only out at night.

Novel by Richard Matheson. Who also wrote What Dreams May Come, The Incredible Shrinking Man, A Stir of Echoes, and Duel (all made into movies), as well as scripting many classic Twilight Zone episodes. He also wrote Hell House which was made into the 1973 film, The Legend of Hell House. In the 60s, he teamed with Roger Corman to adapt several Edgar Allen Poe stores. Many starring Vincent Price.

@@clh35 - It's not less sad when a male dog dies, and it's not a big reveal, but a passing and notable one. It was intentional of the writers that he calls the dog Sam, and only before her death does he say Samantha. Sam on its own is moreso a male name, and just the circumstances of a dog he's out hunting with and the like, a lot of folks would just assume the dog was male. And, as I said, the dog ending up being female ties in further to the emotions of losing his wife and daughter. If we knew she was a girl all along it wouldn't matter the same, but the way they did it added something.

@@clh35 it is more meaningful because he lost his wife, who is a female, and his daughter, who is a female. making the dog female hold more significance for him because it is a closer reminder of who he has lost, and who he couldn't protect. whether you like it or not there are differences between the sexes. the entire plot of the movie is about connection, the male zombie as in their own way bonded with the female zombie. try to keep up, its only the entire plot of the movie.

The movie missed the entire point of the comic book. It’s the slow realization, that he (the character played by Will Smith in the movie) Is no longer the majority species, and that to the vampires, he is the bogeyman. He is the legend. He is the thing that goes bump in the night that they tell their children’s stories about.

So a little tidbit for you. So all react channels actually in a crazy way owe their ancestry to the Book that this film was based on. So, Charlton Heston read the book on a plane and pitched to have it adapted into a movie. The movie would become The Omega Man. In the film, there is a scene where Heston's character is watching a movie about Woodstock and is commenting as he watches. This scene inspired Joel Hodgson to create the tv series Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Where he and a bunch of puppet robots would watch a movie while adding reactive commentary. This would become what we see now as modern react channels such as you guys. 😁 Sorry for the essay lol, but I thought being a react channel you would enjoy this little bit of info.

It's apparently based on the book The Omega Man. There was a movie from the 70s based on the book by the same name as the book. ie watched it but not red the book, so i don't know which is closer to the book. There some details similar between the movies i noticed like the device he uses to activates the lights looks identical, but the story plays out differently, but similar beats.

12:25 - I *THINK* most diseases aren't zoonotic (able to be transmitted between humans and animals). It can be difficult for some pathogens to cross species barriers depending on the other species' immune system, methods of infection, cellular structure, etc. And even if it _does,_ there's no guarantee that *other* animals would be fair game (pun unintended) for infection, or even that those it infects will get sick enough to transmit the virus to others.
