The book is definitely better. The ending of the book explains the title of the story. The book is titled "I am legend". The movie should have been called "I am hero". Will Smith's character wasn't a legend, he was a hero to humanity. Where in the book, he was the terror of the vampires. The book is why I love books. They can have interesting, depressing, or thought provoking endings. Hollywood can't make big budget movies that have high caliber stars and have an ending like the book because the focus group will complain about it. Well unless you have the Coen brothers writing and directing.

You're definitely right that the book and movie of I Am Legend are a good example of what can happen in books, but not really in movies. Books can be way more experimental and take bigger risks, while movies with huge budgets are very rarely able to do those kinds of things. Still I felt like the directing and cinemetography of I Am Legend's movie took a lot of risks - the sequence where Will Smith is looking for his dog in a dark building after it chases a deer into the zombie's nest is an example of a really creative sequence. to me they just excel at different things, but if I *had* to only pick one, im with you, the book wins
