I work mostly in charcoal and I make my own. I only use Hazel wood and I'm able to create form in my work, but I'm not trying to photo replica artwork. So would imagine that having a variety of tools would help in that respect

Interesting easel. Looks like a large sheet of plywood with something (smooth?) mounted on it and the paper mounted over that. Has me thinking that a wall has potential too.

Thank you for once again for making a really helpful video on painting 😉. You recommended using a smooth paper for drawing or painting charcoal because this makes it easier to manipulate or handle it. Can you please explain me, why when using charcoal it is so much easier using a smooth surface while when using pastels it is so important so use a rough one. For me these mediums are quite similar so I thought for charcoal would be a rougher paper better as with pastels... thanks a lot in advance and best regards!

If you want to get the blacks then you need a hard charcoal, if the tooth is too much then the hardness of the charcoal prevents it from getting into the hollows of the paper and you basically have to stand there pushing it in with a blending stump, also if you want to do something realistic then you want to be able to remove and apply at will, if you're traveling over the mountains and having to get into the valleys you're going to have a very bad time trying to get what you want to happen.

Yah I agree and there are actually quite a few hyperrealism artist the swear against it. "Straedtler mars lumograph black" is just as dark as charcoal and you don't have the issues of charcoal. Stays sharp doesn't smudge as much or make a mess. And honestly when done right I think graphite realism, is alot more realistic. Doesn't look as painted and muddy.

Im having trouble lifting the vine charcoal even if applied lightly and smoothed. On Hahnemuhle Drawing and Sketching paper, 140gm for pencil, charcoal, pen and ink the vine charcoal seems to stain the paper. It is pretty impossible to lift and create highlights. It isn't that textured either as I found the smoother the paper the easier it seems to lift the vine charcoal with a kneaded eraser. I have some Arches hot pressed water colour cotton paper 300 gsm which I will try. The cold pressed was too textured and the charcoal again was difficult to lift. The charcoal is english coates artist quality so I don't think that would be the issue. Any guidance please?

My biggest grip with charcoal is sharpening the charcoal pencils. They keep breaking before I can get them sharp and therefore don’t attempt drawing with charcoal. I love the look and feel but frustrated with sharpening them. Is there a special sharpener, or technique?

Aha ! I get the title of the video now… No drawing! :-) We paint with charcoal :-) I think it boils down to a series of stages… 90% of the “painting“ is done with blocking in values and shapes… I think the drawing part comes at the end, with the point of the charcoal, whether it be a pencil or a stick, carving in small details along with the fine eraser carving in little highlights. That’s the drawing part. I even do this at the end of a painting with paintbrush, yes, you can draw with the paintbrush! Lol.

So, having spent 7.5 minutes not answering the question, are you saying you should sketch/draw first with a light graphite pencil, then apply the charcoal to the sketch?
@StudioWildlife
@StudioWildlife Жыл бұрын
Not at all, the purpose of the video is changing the way I think about using charcoal, it can’t be used the same way as graphite pencils. Using charcoal is more like painting with a dry medium not like drawing. You could apply a light graphite sketch first or you could jump straight into using charcoal. But the thing that I had to get over was the idea that the best way to use charcoal is by not ‘drawing’ with it, and think of it as a way of applying the medium to the surface, it’s then what you do after it’s on the surface that’s more important.

@@StudioWildlife For a different perspective on graphite, you might want to check out Jono Dry's channel. His methods have evolved over the years. Switching to graphite powder made a big difference. Then using makeup brushes became a "game changer" (his words). He treats graphite as a "moveable medium" (again, his words). As you are painting with charcoal, he is painting with graphite.

Hello, first, thank you very much for your very nice video. You did post a short before with the title "Huge Realistic Lion Drawing in Charcoal" Because you are confused yourself, you are making people confused let me remind you the difference between, drawing and painting. You are using a drawing technique to.....make painting, like other gluing different stuff on canvas, instead of different stuff you are using charcoal. The term "drawing with charcoal" is commonly used rather than "painting with charcoal." Charcoal is primarily associated with drawing, where it is used to create expressive lines, shadows, textures, and values by applying charcoal directly to the drawing surface, typically paper or cardboard. Artists use charcoal in drawing by making expressive marks, blending, and employing various techniques to create artistic pieces. In contrast, the term "painting" is usually reserved for the use of liquid or semi-liquid mediums such as oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, etc., which require applying pigments mixed with a liquid binder onto a surface to create an image. Painting involves a different technique where artists use brushes or other tools to apply the paint to canvas, paper, or any other artistic support. So, in summary, charcoal is used for drawing, while liquid painting mediums are used for painting.( Translation of my French original chat )
