Shoot, I'm glad I saw your video. I've been wanting to start a project in black & white. I thought using pencils would work fine. Now I'm not so sure. I think I'm gonna have to go out and buy a few of these charcoal drawing tools.

When it comes to white charcoal, what types can be used? And what about blackboard chalk, can that be used with brushes for light layers?
@GingahSnapsArt8 ай бұрын
So if I understand your layering correctly - you generally apply the soft charcoal, then the medium charcoal, then the hard charcoal?

Hello. I was curious about why you outline with graphite. Can you just use a charcoal pencil?
@MesserCreations Жыл бұрын
Hi, I outline with graphite because the graphite tends to be of a higher quality so my outline is lighter on paper. That way if I need to make any adjustments I can easily erase. Once I have my basic shape solidified I then go in with my charcoal pencils. Its just my personal preference, you can totally draw your outline with charcoal instead of graphite.

So does the hard charcoal one is like for thick shadows? and the soft is for details? its so complicated😅
@MesserCreations Жыл бұрын
No, hard charcoal is used for detail work. Medium charcoal is for building your low values, soft charcoal is for your base layers. I know it seems complex at first but after you have drawn with this method a few times it starts to become easier :)

Actually, charcoals vary with the wood they are made from, especially in tone. Stick charcoal is uncompressed (it is in the woods natural state other than being carbonised) so these are not considered compressed. The term compressed it reserved for charcoal which is compressed from a powder together with binders. I think your use of the word 'compressed' when referring to vine or willow is confusing...
