I Am Otto Octavius | Superior Spider-Man Comic Dub

Superior Spider-Man was a good idea on paper, but in my humble opinion missed the mark by a wide margin thanks to the bumbling incompetence of one Dan Slott.
The brief Christos Gage run on Superior, however, took the very few good things from Slott's run and molded them into quite possibly one of the most enjoyable and consistent stories in Spider-Man history, at least until Marvel editorial shoved Mephisto into it and bungled the ending.
Here, however, I've decided to voice one of my favorite moments between Otto and Peter, where our titular webslinger gives his old nemesis some much needed hero advice.

@@kofmmbs I think the point is that there's a balance between the greater good and looking after yourself, and that it's a balance that Spider-Man rarely knows how to strike well. For instance, Otto would leave SOME bad guys to the cops, SOME fires to the firefighters, and SOME villains to the other Superheroes. Being responsible doesn't mean taking on ALL of the responsibility. Otto was mainly selfish and had to learn how to do good, but his tendencies towards being efficient as possible made it much easier for him to overcome certain life-work balancing issues than it ever was for Peter. It's a good Aesop with a morally questionable foundation of snatching someone else's body. Responsibility in general is NOT an either-or situation where you're either selfish or selfless.

This. This is how I saw Superior Spider-Man. Not some jerk trying to ruin Peter's life by taking it over, not a egomaniac trying to prove he's better than his old foe, but a former supervillian, one of the most dangerous ones alive, trying to redeem himself, and is constantly worried that he isn't doing enough, that he could've done more to help people. This, is the Otto Octavious I wanted to see, the one I fell in love with and wanted to follow his story. This had the potential to be a incredible redemption arc, putting Otto on the path of heroism, or at least making him a Venom level Anti-Hero. But Mephisto(and the writers desire to adhere to a status queue) ruined it. I don't know if they're willing to have Doctor Octopus be a heroic character, I am unable to keep up with every modern comic, but I hope they at least try to write him as such. Not some half hearted attempt that they can cop out on and go back to 'world domination' or 'Sinister Six' but an actual long term effort to keep the momentum of his redemption going. If not, then every part of Superior Spider-Man would've been pointless.

Coming in freshly reading the one shot starting off the new run of superior spiderman coming due November 15th I can briskly say.....seems like their giving him his shot. Present day Oc still can barely remmember his time as Superior, but the fragments of his success, the good he's done, and the people who echo his past life's highs ache on him like post trauma while his present self tries desperately to be the "old" Oc. He hasn't awakened to the heroism yet, but come November it's likely he will fall back into it following taking up the mantle again. (Most of the October 11th one-shot took place in the past. Only starting and ending in the present, so while Oc is not Superior spiderman again just yet, he's making his way back to that life narratively.)

Writing like this really makes me wish that it wasn't the nature of comics that everything goes back to the status quo. Keeping Otto as a more morally ambiguous version of spider-man and seeing where that goes with a good writer on board would be interesting in the long run. Marvel just had to bring Mephisto into the mix again to pull a "one more day" and reset Otto back into a villain in his original body.

The flipping of the webbing on the mask to be uspide down is also a nice touch. Four webs on the top and three on the bttom instead of the clasic three on the top and four on the bottom. The lighter fleshy shade of red also gives it a Clayton Craine carnage vibe. So yeah they should definitely bring back that version somewhere at some point.

Second off every Spider-Man has to deal with mephisto honestly feels like he’s more of a villain to the spiders than ghost rider, and lastly why did we have to get rid of superior Spider-Man he was one of my favorite spider characters the man struggled so much and could of just started off as a villain in peter’s body at the beginning but instead he wanted to prove that he could be a better super hero than Peter and by the end of it he was humbled. I am so dissatisfied of the ending with his story but at the same time we have so many characters in the spider group that are nice as well Peter, Miguel, Jessica, miles, Gwen, Ben, Kane to name a few

Gosh. If there was ever a Spider-Man character that REALLY earned their webs besides Ben Riley, it really was Otto. Otto has morals, discipline, control, vision, it was all blinded by his need for recognition, for greed. This guy actually impressed Aunt May, remember she nearly married him and she's always been a woman attracted to a good centered, moral man. Aunt May's approval is a sign of how Otto was more than just his metallic tentacles. I honestly wish he was kept around, because Spider-Man may be amazing, could even be spectacular, but he'll never again be Superior.

Miles goes through his shit too my guy. He isn't spared from dealing with craziness, depression or other things. It's just he's not getting his character dragged through the mud and kicked while he's down like everyone else (Kaine excluded because he's been.. absent from comics since Spider-Verse 203) thankfully. Like currently in his new run, he's dealing with being very depressed and he's ghosting the people close to him because of it. He's slipping up in being in control of himself and his emotions as Miles Morales and as Spider-Man and he's experiencing some negative consequences because of it and the people around him are also suffering too. Just because Miles isn't suffering from The Marvel Editorial's stupid, idiotic and dumb decisions, doesn't mean that life is going good for him in the comics. He's going through it too, but differently from Peter and Ben. Also, Ben should've stayed dead if CHASM was going to be the current result of him being alive again (Clone of a Clone but still)

Peter is written REALLY WEIRDLY I can't even lie. Great Power...MUST come with GREAT RESPONSIBILITY....so WHY is he not living up to it. He has SO MUCH POTENTIAL. I’m confused. I haven’t been following the spider man comics for a while but I thought Otto took over Peter’s body, but eventually Peter got it back. How are they both spider man simultaneously? Is one from a multi-verse rather than the original continuity?

As much as this scene feels impactful, I can not attest to the quality of the 2nd run of Superior Spider-man. For starters, being relegated to being 'San Francisco's Spider-man' means he's been side-lined in the Marvel universe. Sure he participates in events, but he no longer has the status of the ''main spider-man'' for better and for worse. The quality of the art dropped significantly since it's supposed to be a side-book. His new love interest is rather forgettable. The new plots are less imaginative and creative. Most memorable aspect is his relationship with that kid. As far as Otto's character development is concerned, I'm iffy about it. The book's entire purpose was to remedy a key ''flaw'' of the original run, which was that the 'redemption' was rushed due to the incoming TASM sequel. Was it successful? Yes, certainly people much prefer this mellowed-out Otto who appears more sensible and compassionate. But it kind of defeats the entire point of the premise. He just becomes yet another Kaine, whilst I'm aware I know Kaine outright denied pre-tenses to being a hero, he did seek redemption in his own way albeit being the reluctant hero. The thing about the original Superior Spider-man run was that Otto did not seek redemption, he did not think he could change or that he wanted to, he was perfect as is. He was a hero to feed his ego and every point of redemption that occurred wasn't intentional, it just showed that mimicking a hero in his own way was starting to affect him. If the run did not waste time with the 2099 sub-plots and Superior Venom, more slow changes could have been shown in Superior before the abrupt revolution in character during Goblin Nation. Then with Otto's sacrifice he should have never returned back. Should have been the end to his character the way Kraven's Last Hunt was written to be the end of Kraven's
