Going more in-depth into the whole "forced upgrade" mentality this time.
Is it a new thing? Of course not.
Do you have to re-buy everything all over again? Of course not.
Is it TRULY a forced upgrade? YES! How else would it work? Maybe if they asked nicely? Said pretty please will you please buy our shiny new HD stuff? Yeah. THAT would work.
Don't blame the studios and electronics makers for providing us with a better product. Blame everyone who's BUYING it and making it a SUCCESS.
Shame on the world for wanting something better, and shame on the companies giving it to us!
Whatever. IT'S RANT TIME! But first...I need a bite to eat.

Laserdisc meaning enthusiast format. Today though one could rant that Amazon isn't doing a good enough job with Prime Video with the constant holding back of the streaming technology when I can watch some rando stream 1080p60 with their phone but Amazon only features the DVD quality version of a Prime Video that has a Blu Ray release. Blu-Ray is the ultimate format that got lucky.

@@MultimediaJay If you are talking enthusiast format, then that is most definitely going to be 4K UHD discs. Blu-ray is extremely mainstream with shops, at least where I'm from, having more Blu-ray than DVD these days. 4K, on the other hand, is targeted at enthusiasts - normal everyday people aren't going to be buying 4Ks while they are likely to buy BDs.

My dad still says the same shit, "I can't really see the difference between regular DVD and bluray"....LOL. DVDs look NOTHING like blu rays (and 4Ks look pretty different from standard blu rays as well), I think at this point it's just plain denial. Ok, if you can't see the difference then why do you have HD cable instead of standard definition cable (it still exists) if you can't tell the difference? It very contradicting. He refuses to even take a blu ray with a DVD copy inside when I give it away for free, it's like some weird biasness against blu ray.

I always wanted a Laser Disc player. I was only a kid when that format existed and I begged my parents to get one but they wouldn't budge. They barely used the VCR (most of the time we would have to tape movies off the TV as my parents were cheap on buying them). By the time I was old enough to start working and buying my own, DVD was out and popular with Laser Discs dying out so there went the laser disc player.

SECAM is France only....but that only applies to the VHS era as they are now PAL standard Region 2. Also to avoid confusion when shopping for Japanese DVDs, Japan is Region 2 as well, however they are "NTSC Region 2" which specifically adds a blocker to any of their cd based games or dvds from working in North America (and obviously Europe)

When I finally got my MacBook Pro I tested out a 1080p trailer and was astonished at the sharpness. On upscaling, when I saw Mamma Mia on DVD (and yes it was even more disgusting than I imagined - like a female Transformers) the HDTV produced a very sharp image. And anyone wanting a good test of the difference between 480, 720 and 1080, look at the scene from Up in the Air where Clooney is in front of an airport departures board - the tiny text goes from illegible to really very sharp indeed.

@Zaranyzerak Like you said, both physical and downloadable media will continue to co-exist but as we move forward, I wouldn't be surprised if physical formats became niche... like CDs. Yes there still around, but I haven't purchased any in a LONG time, and either have any of my friends and family members. CD sales have dropped and will continue, just like DVDs and Blu Rays will. And from what I remember, Blu Ray sales haven't been living up to expectations as companies had hoped for.

Honestly I do't see DVD going away anytime soon, especially at the price most new copies of older films go for. Blu Ray is nice to look at, the audio is richer, the color for the most part has been corrected and enhanced, there's obviously a lot to like, but I just feel trapped with my Blu Rays. I'm in the military, so I do a lot of moving and run things mostly off my laptop. Even though my laptop has a Blu Ray drive, decoding the discs is often a nightmare, it mostly relies on pricey 3rd party software. it is definitely a home body format, pop it in your player or game system and enjoy. My DVDs are way more convenient. I can rip them as .ISO images, fit almost my entire collection on an external drive at full quality, tons of free software out there to support .ISO dvd playback, and I can keep my physical copies neatly tucked away at home waiting for me. Blu Ray just feels so limited by playback, all that encryption to prevent piracy has failed, and only made it difficult for those who shelled out the cash to buy them to enjoy them conveniently. The quality is there, but for the price and convenience DVD still wins out in my opinion. Sure, if you get decent software at a top price, you can decode and rip Blu Ray to ISO, but a majority of free media software can't play Blu Ray .ISO files, Even if you want to lug around your physical discs, patches that are buggy at best for VLC player and other media players still rely on third party software to decode the discs, most of which require internet access. There's just too many parts to that equation.

And lastly, you have to take into account people's budgets: Say you have Sherlock Holmes on Blu ray and DVD. There is roughly, a £10/$10 price difference (I mean fresh in store, not used). When Joe Monday comes in, what is he going to get? The cheaper DVD that may lack features he probably is not going to care much for, or the more expensive format that has feautres, but requires a less-financially and more limited medium to play it on, plus things such as HD TVs to really get the full deal?

I have quite a few people in my store that don't understand why they can't get a VHS player and why new movies arn't coming out in VHS 2. Widescreen is here to stay. I've got a small group of customers that won't shop at my store anymore because we don't have pan and scan dvds. I've tried to explain to them and they think they just need to wait and P&S will come back.

Agreed about the forced upgrades... nowadays it seems like if you want to buy a dvd, it comes bundled with a blu-ray anyhow. a lot of early blu-rays had the problem with the waxing skin effect from overuse of drm, digital grain scrubbing/filtering, etc. I just read a review of upgrading to 4k where it was admitted early "4k" movies were actually just upscaled 2k. even if you wanted to convert your whole film library to 4k, there's going to be a bunch of movies that won't even be anything more than upscaled 2k because no higher resolution masters exist...

Why do you assume I haven't? I waited a while because of lack of funds. I couldn't afford to get a new TV, new player and pay a premium on new titles. I've barely bought anything the past couple of years, so I went mainly with Blu-ray because it was cheaper and was what I could afford. It's been a rough few years, I'm not made of money. Now things are better, I have a PS5, a 4K TV and if a title is on 4K,. I get the 4K. Because NOW I can afford it. So not missing out on anything anymore. And honestly unless you've got a MASSIVE screen or projector I'm not seeing that big a difference on my 55" screen. I'm mainly buying them for the day when I DO get a massive screen and/or projector. VHS to DVD and DVD to Blu-ray were massive leaps forward in quality. 4K, not so much. But it is quite nice, I like the black cases, and look forward to the day I have a screen massive enough to truly appreciate the difference. Which should be in the next few months.

@@zaranyzerak I didn’t assume anything. I always watched your channel before and that’s what I used to know. It’s been a while I’ve been checking out your channel, I guess that’s why I didn’t know you upgraded and I’m glad you did. And yes, the bigger screens do make a difference in picture quality. But a 55 inch screen does have better traits compared to larger screens. It keeps the pixels more dense and gives you a sharper picture. But, with a larger screen in my opinion, shows off the HDR better.

@Zaranyzerak I see your point. It's like taking the 1997 release of Quake II and running it in 1080p. The low textures etc would pale next to something truly next gen like Killzone 2. Plus on some games, the framerate would take a hit on the Xbox since it's only a modified Pentium 3 PC at heart. Now, if the Wii had of been able to output 720p it would have no doubt have trashed the original Xbox when you look at games like Metroid Prime 3 and The Conduit. A great shame really.

I guess that not many people know of the Blu-Ray/DVD compatibility and immedeatily think of it as being similar to the VHS issue, in which a new player needs to be brought, just to play that one format. The players are coming down in price, but slowily, much like the old DVD players. But the most expensive piece of kit is the HD TV's themselves, during this so called 'finacial crisis' people won't want to immedeatily change to a more expensive format right away.

An easy way to know that DVD is all but dead: I saw a commercial the other night for a romantic comedy coming out and they only advertised it being on blu-ray. This is not only for people buying big tentpole action/sci-fi movies anymore. I do kind of live in a bad area to gauge how much it's really taking over though as this is an extremely poor part of the US and DVD has a larger presence than blu-ray in most stores and the Best Buy in town unfortunately closed it's doors here.

no doubt, i've been wanting to buy a nice new fancy tv, or Projector. I just haven't had the funds to plop down a 1000.00+ on something that I know i'll find a better one for cheaper the next day.

This is the 1st I've ever heard of DVD being intended as a transition format, and I used to sell electronics when DVD players & HDTV's first came out. I also paid close attention to things during the HD format war. DVI jacks in HDTV's only lasted one year (pretty sure) before HDMI replaced them. I never heard it was a transition before it was replaced. Where did you learn DVD was always intended as a transition?

I'm not questioning the HD change, because it was going to happen as anyone with half a brain knows, but the fact is, the jump from VHS to DVD and now, from DVD to blu-ray are not the same (the former was a jump from two completely different types of media, as well as practicality and performance, whereas now, despite some little differences, it's just from one disc to another. The lack of multi-platform support strikes again).

Speaking of conspiracy theories: I'll say this as many times as it takes for you to finally get this: Digital broadcasting standards are just as split as the old analog ones. ATSC is in US, Canada, Mexico DVB-T is in Europe, Russia, Australia, and some Graphics. ISDB-T is a standard in South America and Japan. DMB-T/H is the system in China. There are some countries trying more than 1 of these out that haven't decided what they're going with yet too. :-P

But moving on, personally I'm beginning to get used to the format and it's advantages over DVD, but I'm still buying DVD anyway for various reasons. Oh The Transformers: The Movie Blu-Ray edition, at the moment it's out of print, however, Metrodome have just re-released the TV seasons on DVD with new pakaging, so if I know Metrodome that well, they'll re-release it, Perhaps around the same time Revenge of the Fallen comes out, but that's just a guess. But you can still find copies here and there

It saddens me that they are doing way less with blu-ray then they could be doing. . . They could have whole seasons of some things one one disk. . . It has a projected storage cap of a maximum of 50 Gigs. . . thats a lot of room to just have one movie on it...

Actually blu-ray is already doing better than DVD did its first 3 years.

I think your point that the "situation now is the same as the situation then" is a bit skewed. I'm no Blu-Ray sceptic or anything (and will get into it once my finances allow it :D!), but to change from VHS to DVD felt pretty cool (at least for a casual consumer like me) as you were changing from a boxy black tape to a sleek, shiny CD. Now, it's from CD to better CD. Though I don't doubt Blu-Ray has better quality than DVD, the same techno-fetishist mystery and appeal just isn't *quite* there.

Well if DVD ends and there is only Blu Ray I'll be mad :/ But hopefully that wont happen for a while. I love how technology evolves. It amazes me how only 50 or 40 years ago there was no home video and then BAM we get all that stuff. I'm looking forward to Hi Def, just not right now.

hi zarany, i disagree with you on one point,a friend of mine had a blu ray rip of the new hulk movie and asked me to do it on dvd for him,i have the original (as in not pirate) movie on dvd, and even though i clearly lowered the resolution and lost quality it was still better then my dvd, i though it was just a crap transfer. but then just out of curiosity i got some of his rips that i own on dvd and did the same thing, and not all of them were better, but many of them did.

I know this video is a few years old, but I just wish to say my piece: Format upgrades are nothign new, and technology moves on. I agree with you there fully. But, there are other factors that differ the DVD affair from blu-ray: 1) Media Support. Compare how most laptops come with DVD players, not to mention the CRUCIAL role of the PS2 and Xbox in popularising the medium. (Why did those other disc-medias flop? No multi-platform support, as well as high price tags).

The PS3 and 360 are HD ready consoles, since most games only output 720p (sometimes even lower than that!)

Most Blu-rays are multi-region (essentially "region free" to use the old DVD term). You'll see A B C icons on them. Still, some aren't, which can be annoying if you import stuff because some country has a better transfer than your local market version (there's quite a few things released in France and Germany that get way better transfers than the UK or US edition for example).

Me and you are exactly the same. I want all the stuff in my collection the best available. I am slowly starting to rebuy some of my favorites on blu ray. It is not a forced upgrade on my part at all and it really should not be. Blu ray players are far cheaper now than before. When they first came out it was like $1,000 to get one. Now you can buy one for a $100.

14:27 not sure i get your point on this subject... people are complaining that they dont want repurchase releases and then your counterpoint is that you personally have bought the same movie releases from vhs to blue-ray...???? how is that a counterpoint.. its just an opinion of preference. im not really getting the anger. people are gonna think what they think.

Basically Sony have overhyped the PS3 to be a Blu-ray player. If Sony have any hopes of surviving in the console world, they need to get their act together. Basically I was dissapointed this new console wasen't backwards compatible with exsisting PS1 and PS2 games. It's a very likely excues to try and get people to sign up (spend money) on their PSN. I can go on about the falls of the 360 bit age but i won't.
Blu-ray is so expensive! It should be JUST as cheap as DVD!!!
