I Am Switching HF Radios Due to Low Vision

Due to my low vision in recent times, I needed to make a switch with my HF radio to be able to have something easy and fun for me to use again. This makes ham radio hf radio fun for me again.

Larry, I am glad that you are still making KZbin videos. You were one of the original KZbin influencers who got me into amateur radio. I am sorry to learn that your vision is declining but am happy that the ICOM radio is working easier for you. I think you can plug in a TV or monitor to that 7300 too on HDMI and potentially mount the TV or monitor some there easy to see as well. The speech function is great. I know I memorized the button layout and menu structure on my handheld, ICOM ID52. with the spear function and muscle memory I can operate that radio mostly with my eyes closed. Icom makes it easier. 73 Larry

Great choice Larry! I have the IC 7610 but as you stated its a little more money but the screen is bigger and there is an external monitor option which is nice for my eyes. 73 thanks for the vid!

The 7300 is a great "do it all" radio, dont forget you can hook up a monitor to it. I'm not visually impared, but dont discount an SDR. I run my Hermes lite 2 from my livingroom, and when I go the "shack" which is also my garage...I use a 55 " hi def TV monitor a neighbor threw out. It's only 5 watts, but OTOH it was only $400 delivered. EXCELLENT radio IMO 73 de k2eds

the icom 7300 is a great choice for a hf radio lots of great features and the display is easyer to see i have a problem with my eye sight also its been a great choice for me also i also have the icom 7610 the display on it is also very easy to see ....best wish,s larry im praying for you ,,,thomas in north central missouri ...73

I'm glad you found a radio that works for you! I've had my 7300 for going on 3 years. I originally bought it thinking I'd upgrade to a 7610 after a bit but to be honest I still like the 7300. It's a good radio for the price point.

I have the IC-7300 a wonderful rig. Combine it with Win4ICOM and you can see the display even better.

I have this radio. Put the screen on a computer monitor. I love the 7300 but I just bought a Yaesu FTD-X10. The radio has a jack for a monitor and you can use a mouse and a keyboard as well. It's a good idea to have a few radios. Now you have at least two. One more thing, the icom 7300 is my favorite radio.

I share your frustration. I’ve not been active on the bands for quite a few years, however very recently I brought my Kenwood TS2000X out of storage. Now while the display is easy to read I just couldn’t fathom the buttons out. When I last used it I know I didn’t have this problem and I could navigate the front panel like a concert pianist. But now I have problems seeing the buttons, never mind reading the labels to see what function they perform. Just another reminder of how entropy and decay suddenly creeps up on you and swiftly kicks you in the nads with a healthy dose of reality.

I also have very poor vision but I have been using an ICOM IC-718 for over 20 years and have no problem seeing the Frequency and the large buttons plus it doesn't have many to choose from. Of course I only use CW and have been a CW op for over 68 years now. I don't think you can beat the IC-718 for any CW op. Thanks for your info, Pete, WA2JMG

The audio readout of frequency is smart. Some people might find that annoying but when you are scrolling and spinning around sometimes it is easy to flip where you actually think you are on the bands.

Some nice modern gear there, Larry. Or go back to an old valve radio. Big, chunky and clunky. I have an FT817ND and need a magnifying glass. No problem with my old 1944 Wireless 19 Set, hi, which I made xtal tx on 3.560, 5.262 and 7.030 MHz c.w. qrp frequencies for stability. G4GHB

I'm glad you found a solution that works. But I'm curious... how have you been operating the old Drake? Is it pretty easy, or has the rig been officially retired? I ask because it was your video on the Drake that talked me into getting my own Drake.

It is still functional and easy to operate with the large controls but I don't put it on the air very often, it is mostly retired now.

The IC-7300 is a nice radio (I have one), but I find it is very easily overloaded by (geographically) nearby strong signals. It will display OVF in red on the display when that's happening, and the receiver performance goes in the toilet. I would think a rig with a video out jack would be even more helpful as you can send it to an external monitor of whatever size you like.

They are something I found on Amazon that come with different power lenses you can put in up to 5 power. Not sure what they are called now, had them a while.

I sold that to a buddy. My eyesight is getting much worse and I couldn't see all the buttons and display anymore so I went with the 7300 due to the touch screen and easy navigation with the larger screen, love it for me. Made radio fun again for me.

@@ouijim I've owned one for years, a$$hat. I know exactly what its shortcomings are. It's a piece of crap in a multi-operator contest situation. It is very easy to overload. Heck it's easy to overload if you simply have another ham within a few miles. Now sit there and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. Sure it'll compare to an FT-710. It's in the same cheap class. Neither one is anywhere near "outstanding". You apparently don't have a clue what technical qualities make a radio outstanding.
