Well... he is the verry model of a bible overanaliser. he knows the Middle eastern languages and also a bit of ancient Turkish. he writes essays without making spelling mistakes. he lists Middle Eastern words based on how they 'mutate' (Look up Arabic Cojegation for more info) he read a lot of biblical philosophy. he promotes the correct interpretations, and cancels anyone who got the wrong idea reading the bible. he write books which are contrivercial amongst left leaning bible students. and disses anything that outlaw Finkelstine wrote. after he's done with that he writes about how the fourth book of Moses makes sence. and explain everey squigly thingy in the meta commentary (?) in short in things related to words he is the verry model of a bible overanaliser he read the stuff some dude called jerome wrote. he also knows by heart all the names of god. (From context it seems) the he can tell you how old every main character in the book of Megadrive is. and tell an OU sound from an emphasis and an 'uh'. he dreams in one Middle Eastern language and finds it's meaning in another. he invented the fan theory that one of the biblical villains had a liver condition. and immediatly knows the difference between a crime, he prayed and he profaned. Profaned, Profaned he says that's a hard one isn't it. and is an ace in the debate club then he can tell when an inscription in Giberish was written. and tell you how the writer dressed based on a medieval illustration.(?) plainly sayed he knows a lot of word stuff for a bible nut. them he can write a shopping list in a really really old Middle Eastern language. (the oldest written, in fact) and tell you where people farmed, or hunted. he also knows when Jews party and when they fast. he can whisper in yet another Middle eastern language, more than that hum a melody in another then he can sing the ABC's of another Middle Eastern tribe's aplhabet. and sepparate the animals in groups of pre-flood and post flood. (read Noah's ark for more) afterwards distinguish between three pieces of Priestly garnment. shawl, shawl, he supposes you cannot bypass it. and do a remake of some Assyrian king's library. his PHD thesis was a poem written in ~you guessed it~ a Middle Eastern language. and sayed that the Philistines where an American group (because they dressed like Utah Indians). shortly: he good with bible 'n words he is the verry model of a bible nut. (No idea what Presto Aggitato means) Refrain: then he can write a shopping list in an ancient dead langage. and tell you where the people hunted or farmed. he knows when Jews party and when they fast. he can sing in not one, but two Middle eastern languages. he knows the ABC's of some ancient alphabet. and categorise the animals into the pre flood and post flood. he knows what Priests wear. and remake some king's library. he wrote his Phd thesis like an ancient poem. and proved that the Philistines where probably Native Americans. in short in word stuff, he is a great bible nut. And finally he dissed the founder of Messianic Judaism.

Clever and fun, but the picture is not of a Biblical Philologist! It is James Murray the editor of the OED in his Oxford Scriptorium. Although he could, like most of his generation, read Greek, Aramaic (including Syriac), and Hebrew he is NOT usually considered a "Biblical philologist" by nature or training. For a great read about him read "The Professor and the Madman" by Winchester. The true story of Murray's correspondence with William Chester Minor, a civil war general who had gone mad and was serving a life sentence for murder at the Broadmore asylum for the criminally insane when he made huge contributions to the OED. Some might argue that those who ARE "Biblical philologists" are by definition insane! I remember having exams in several languages (four I think) and over 3 millennia of History one finals week at UCLA. When I ask Giorgio Buccellati (who was at the time both my history and Akkadian teacher) if I could have an extra week to study my Akkadian sign lists, he said no. I protested that I was taking four language classes as well as history that quarter and would he please give me an extra week. He said no. I begged him, "Is there ANYTHING I can do?" He replied, without missing a step as we walked from Akkadian to History which was in a different building, "Yes." "What?" I gasp. "Study!" He said without any expression. I got an A --and more importantly, lived through the week! Now that's crazy!

OK, but I think there might be something wrong about 1:22. It gives השתחוה as an example of "hishtaphel" (השתפעל) but isn't it really just in התפעל, and the ש is part of the root (with metathesis)? An example of השתפעל would be השתעבד or השתחרר, right? (with all the root letters after the השת־ prefix)
@joshtyra
@joshtyra 10 жыл бұрын
You've hit on a disagreement scholars have had over the triliteral root in this verb form. Some say it is שחה, in which case you are right that it would be a התפעל form. Others, however, claim that the root is חוה, in which case it would be השתפעל. I'm not really sure which root has the better claim (see the discussions under those two roots in HALOT)... in this case I just really wanted to rhyme something with "hishtaphel!"
@markshoulson1188
@markshoulson1188 10 жыл бұрын
Josh Tyra Ah, cool! I'd always heard it was שחה, not that it was embroiled in controversy. Makes sense, I suppose, since other פ״ה verbs don't seem to grow consonantals vavs all over the place. I don't think I know any other השתפעל words besides the two I quoted anyway. And hey, if you can rhyme השתפעל, you're already onto something pretty impressive.

Brilliant and really funny. We spent many long hours parsing polals etc. let alone checking daghesh fortes in Biblical hermeneutics and Hebrew grammar classes at school, but never saw the humor in it till now! And I love G&S.

G-d bless. That was rather fantastic! I too find Finkelstein abrasive and abhorrent as a Minimalist at every possible turn. He destroyed the reputation of Adam Zertal, just to deny that he found Joshua's altar on Mt Ebal.
