This is my favorite rendition of this song. Not as fast as George Rose, or as lovingly buffonish as the version in the '85 Stradford Festival, but the fact that I can even understand what the Major General is saying and the humor between him and one of the girls really elevates the performance.

I loved this !! The Major General is amazing. In the 1970’s I was a John Reed fan, and thus guy was every bit a good. John Reed was the principal comedian with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in the 1970’s. I got to spend a whole afternoon with John Reed, at his digs in New Brighton, in 1973. He was a wonderful man.

I've seen it faster, but I've never seen it funnier. He puts so much expression into this performance. The score says to do it as fast as the actor can, but I think it *means* as fast as they can do it well. And this major general raises the bar. (And then he proves what his full speed is, just to quell any doubt that it was an artistic choice up to then. Perfect.)
