Not sure about CA, but in USA if someone brakes and you hit them, you're at fault for keeping an unsafe distance. You're expected to keep two car-lengths between you and the car in front of you (although most people rarely do so) and there is a reason. If someone steps out in front of the person in front of you and they need to slam their brakes to avoid hitting them and you rear-end them you're at fault for manslaughter if the pedestrian is struck and killed. You will not be punished for breaking quickly unless you're "break checking" which is breaking with the intention of disrupting the driver behind you, although that's incredibly difficult to prove in court. Hope this clears up any confusion and is informative for anyone curious.

Speed in the us is alot different than Canada apparently. In the us you can go at least 5 miles over before cops will most likely pull you over. Or at least where i am you can.

"Imagine getting a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot when you're actually handicapped." This happened to me while i was in one of my collage classes. From the classroom, I was able to see my car (pretty far away) and I saw the ticket on my windshield. Asked the teacher if I could check it out. Yup. Got a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot because... and you'll never guess why... My handicapped plaque (idk how to spell it) was on my rearview mirror an it happened to fall off, onto the drivers seat. The cop obviously didn't even look in my car or else they'd see it. Missed most of class to get it resolved. At first, they asked for a photo of the handicapped plaque. I did. Then they said it wasn't enough. I needed the actual thing, in hand. But, how am I supposed to park in a handicapped parking spot and not have my plaque showing? I had to walk so much (something I can't do) just to resolve this and had to park so extremely far away.

Yes you pay once a year. In some states you pay your vehicle tax and the registration fee yearly and in other states you pay all of your vehicle tax up front and then only need to pay the registration fee yearly. My state is the latter, so I pay $20 per vehicle per year. I have 3 registered in my name, so $60 a year for registration in addition to insurance costs for them. It's all a giant money racket

Here we also have to pay a yearly fee (though it depends on the car and can be so expensive we divide it in three parts for paying along the year), but we swap a paper document that stays in the vehicle and not the license plate. You would hand it over to the police officer when prompted, but nowadays they can check it in the system through the license plate number. Some speed traps can check it as well and issue a fine automatically. The license plate is only issued when the car is bought for the first time or when the plate is redesigned (like now that we have a South America design similar to the EU plate idea), then who buys your car next, will have to replace it for the new design.

@@DarthGTB Well the plate doesn't change yearly, but in the corner of the plate is w little sticker that comes on that piece of paper that stays in the vehicle. We have to put the new sticker on the plate so it can be identified easily as paid for expired and the the paper stays inside. Not that they really even need it all today when you consider that their computer will tell them all about you when they run your tag number. Still have to have it though
