It was worth the time spent creating this video, Shimmy. You give a clear and broad look at something as complex as what sells in a design. I found that model mockups are very popular amongst women’s designs, not so much with men’s designs
@ambermcintire9303 ай бұрын
First time I’ve heard someone recommend flat lays instead of human models for mockups - I agree that it looks better on the flat lays but I’ve heard people are more drawn to the human mock ups. Just curious if you saw more successful listings with flat lays or if the flat lays just visually looked better
@shimmymorris13 ай бұрын
wayyyyy more successful designs when using flat lays. The main issue with models is they take away from the main focal point of the mockup which is the design. You don't want to distract a potential buyer, you want to lead them straight to the design so they buy

@shimmymorris13 ай бұрын
@@arkikali5632 what do you mean?
@arkikali56323 ай бұрын
@@shimmymorris1 Well, you cited the focus being on the model as one of the big drawbacks of model mockups. But when you're setting up your listing in Etsy, there's an option to adjust the mockup thumbnail, which is what shows up on the main search page. So common advice / arguably best practices is to zoom in so that the shirt nearly fills the thumbnail canvas, but then when people click into your listing, they see they full-size / uncropped mockup. Hope that makes sense.

great video shimmy, i have a question that migh be off topic, i'm just curious how much profit can be made selling one T-shirt ? what is the range ? less than 10 dollars ? or can you profit more than 10 dollars in one item ? and i want to know when starting a Shopify POD, is the best strategy is to just stick to one niche to better target your audience and customers ? Thank you so much shimmy, you're one of the few that are really awesome and authentic that i ever watched , keep it up !
@shimmymorris13 ай бұрын
It depends on the platform you sell on. Our profit on Shopify for 1 t-shirt is $17-$20. But then you have other costs and ads if you want to go down the ads route. We end up profiting about 30% so around the $8-$11 range

So Shimmy one question, most of POD gurus say follow only one niche for multiple products type or only one product type with various niches. But your design predicts various niches, so market place where selling products won't get confused what i am trying to sell or attract the trageted customers through organic traffic? As i am planning to open etsy pod by using 6 product types with focusing on 3type of niches at the beginning. Kindly suggest whether i am good to go with this thought or follow only the pod gurus .
@shimmymorris13 ай бұрын
It depends on the platform really. I really only recommend T-shirts although other products can work. With Etsy I would suggest multiple niches and organise with etsy categories.

Thank you Shimmy for this very useful overview and for all your tutiruals. Interesting that you suggest not using model mockups as it detracts from the design, whilst many Etsy tutots state the very opposite saying that potential customers want and need to visualise how the design looks in real-time. I guess you can only go by what you've analysed and the data associated with that.

Great video, Shimmy! I have a question, and I'm not sure you've covered it on your channel. How do you handle sales tax through Shopify? Is that handled by Shopify? Or are you responsible for it? And what about sales that are made in the US or other countries? I'm on Etsy now, and they currently handle the sales tax. But at some point, I want to move to Shopify. Thank you so much!

@@shimmymorris1 I’ve been considering joining the community since we last had this exchange. I just have a few questions if you wouldn’t mind helping me out with a few answers. Where do you recommend sourcing graphics for designs? (I’m not afraid of using AI, and honestly kind of prefer to, but am open to what you may recommend using in the community). How long typically before I will have a store up and running? (I have a Shopify store template designed by a web designer, and speed optimized by a coder). When you state Facebook ads section, am I making product videos, or product images into like slideshow ads? How much time per day should I realistically put into this if I’m looking to truly succeed? If you can answer all of these you’ve gained a student. Thank you.

@@shimmymorris1thank you for this, I have been contemplating getting access to the course you offer. I just had a few more questions, how many hours per day on top of working full time do you suggest putting towards the course content and actual creation? Where in the course resources do you recommend getting graphics for tshirts from? I have midjourney and upscaling options available to me. Does your design process work across many platforms (I.e. procreate, affinity suite, little, etc)? I also have an optimized Shopify template I paid for a few years ago, it’s speed optimized as well, will this work for my Shopify store or will I start from scratch? If you can help me with these questions you will have gained a customer and student. Thank you again.

Thanks for a great video! Very informative! On the last point, you say you should never use a mockup on a model as your main thumbnail. On Etsy, 95% of all the thumbnails have a model. In my humble opinion, the ones without look cheap and lazy, and I have lower expectations for it to be a quality product with good customer service. Could you help clarify this point?
@shimmymorris13 ай бұрын
Funnily enough every mockup on Etsy that’s the main image that has a model goes against their T&Cs… so be careful. Also surprisingly it’s not 95%. On first glance it may look like that. But when you dig deeper and start looking at tens of thousands of Etsy listings. You’ll realise the vast majority that are actually performing well don’t include a model in their first mock up
