You probably aren't familiar with Monster Rancher 2 for the PS1, there, you can feed your monsters Magic Bananas, its effect is random, but the best possible result is that it can increase your monster's lifespan for one or two weeks, if I remember correctly. Still, an item that fits your description of what's more important in them is the magic.

Your feelings about Atari era games reflect mine exactly. I am always indecisive about getting the Atari Flashback collection on the Switch because I really have no interest in anything prior to NES and Sega Matster System games; but I respect their historical significance. That being said; I think the Atari Flashback collection would be the best way to get all those games in one purchase and it has alot of extras that make it a good museum piece.

1) how much time do you spend making a video on average? 2) what percentage of your game collection have you played? 3) which are your most played consoles? Edit: extra questios: 4) since you love bananas so much, what do you think of donkey kong games? (Specifically the ones that aren't Country or the 80s arcade games) 5) how often do you play games with your kids? (If you have any)

1. I spend about 40 hours total on the channel each week (if you count planning, creating, brainstorming, KZbin comments etc.) 2. I've played 95% of my games. Still haven't beaten a lot of them though. Lot of games I'd like to replay as well. 3. Most played consoles are Super Nintendo and Genesis. 4. I haven't really played much of the Donkey Kong games outside the big ones. 5. No kids but I've played games like Smash Bros with my friend's kids.

One Xmas my wife got me an Atari Flashback. I was super happy, but the games did not age well. Frogger was really the only one that held it's ground. I then gave it away for Free to one of my son's friends who has a dad who hates spending money, but the kid told me it wasn't for him either, but his dad loves it. (probably because it was free!) I decided I wanted to play Frogger again & got the Atari Flashback Portable, but it was cheaply made & broke right away. That will probably be my last time revisiting Atari. Might not be the last time I revisit Frogger though.

Excited for this! 1) I find that the Sega Saturn has an intangible synergy that makes it my favorite console far and away. Do you agree that there’s a certain “magic” to this console once discovered or do think people just find “their console” and when you do you know. I didn’t grow up or ever play a Saturn until my 30’s but I caught the bug a few years ago and there is no turning back… 2) do you freeze bananas for ultimate milkshake-like smoothies.
@RetroBirdGaming
@RetroBirdGaming 2 жыл бұрын
1) The Saturn definitely just has a certain magic to it. It's unlike any other console. From it's bizarre past, treasure trove of great 2D games with equally great controller, to the weird more experimental games that never could've been commercially viable (but kick some serious butt for those willing to give them an honest chance). 2) That's the main thing my bananas get used for! Frozen bananas + Almond Milk is all you need. Basically healthy milkshakes that I can pound down with reckless abandon.

Four questions I can think of right off: 1.How come when I actually have the opportunity to ask you anything, I can’t really think of anything, but other times I could? 😂 2. For someone who has never owned a Sega Genesis, would you recommend just buying the system and then continually buying games or would you recommend the Sega Mini(money isn’t an issue here- it’s not like I would buy a hundred games at ONCE- haha.) 3.What’s the best strategy for getting through Earthbound quickly (at least leveling up) AND 4.Will you ever do a personal top 10, 20, 50, or 100 video games of all time list? Thanks for your consideration 😊

The biggest change to arcade games is not having to put money in them. For some games - Gauntlet is a notable example - setting to free play makes it completely risk-free and boring. The best thing you can do to restore some sense of peril to arcade games and enjoy them the way they were intended is to not credit-feed them.

As much as I love the Atari 2600, I understand your side. Personally, the Atari 2600 was of interest but never a huge priority. That is until I purchased an atari flashback 9 gold with the plan of adding roms. Well it didn't work out. My friend, and fellow collector, urged me to get the atari 2600 jr. console. I obliged and wow was I amazed! 70 some games later, it is in decent rotation during gaming sessions. H.E.R.O, Pitfall 2 (with manual), Miner 2049er, & Tapper were the hardest to track down but thankfully my all time favorite Yars' Revenge wasn't lol. Anyone looking for a cheaper system to collect for, look no further. So many great games under $10. Just avoid Pac-Man lol. Also, E.T. is not as bad as it's reputation. It sure has Pac-Man beat.

I 100% agree with you on that gaming is the best now & moving fwd. You simply have a lot more options to game & access to a lot more video games now. Also you have a lot more options of how to buy a game as well. Playing with friends you have more of an option & also playing anyone online who are strangers, you can do that as well. Also you have a lot more resources to search KZbin & anywhere on the internet to research video games before you buy them. I'll break it down each decade. 80's: You had either the Atari, Nes or The Sega Master System. Very limited resources of buying & researching a game to see if they were good or bad. You had to pay a game a full $80 & hope the game you bought was very good. Relying on Friends, little mom & pop shops that rented a handful of games was not good. Because of all this you maybe had 5 -10 games max. 90's: More Video game systems available like The Sega Genesis, Sega Cd, 32 X, Saturn, Snes, PS 1, N64, Turbo Graphx 16 & Dreamcast. People gamed on these systems more Genesis, Snes, Ps 1 & N64. Blockbuster video & other huge video stores were available. Local arcades with tons of games. Gaming Magazines. Huge Stores like Walmart & Toys R Us. Options were a lot better but resources stayed were better. You still had about 5-10 games max because games were $80- 100 now in those days. 2000's... Pretty much the same as the 90's but now you had emulation for retro games. Present day & future: You have way more games to access too. Via Emulation for retro games. Options to buy games are there whether you want to shop in stores or shop online. You can purchase digital titles via your console's store. Access to 1000's of games now. Also games go on sale for as little as $10 and like $4 on some of the digital games. Game pass to try out games, you can research anything you want via You tube or other websites on the internet. Gaming on your phone for free & they sell arcade Cabinets that you can put emulation of arcade games for that.

@RetroBirdGaming
@RetroBirdGaming 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer Analogue's FPGA consoles. I don't see how virtual reality would really enhance many retro games. I suppose a clever way to do it could be possible though.

I felt the same about pre-NES systems as you did, until my son really got into watching videos of those games on KZbin when he was around 5 and asked for a 2600 for Christmas. I then learned to appreciate them for what they were, and it was easy to get into collecting them given that it’s a rare corner of retro game collecting where the bulk of the games are still very cheap.

At a lower point in my life probably 5 years ago I sold a stack of 10 GBA games for $100. One of those games was Aria of Sorrow. You said that and I checked the internet and sure enough, that one cart is now worth nearly twice as much as I sold all ten for. Gah!

I feel the same about versus multiplayer games, it's why I don't like playing board games like trouble where you're forced to ruin your opponents. I was thinking yesterday about which N64 games I'd like to play with others, and I realized that a lot of them are versus only. The only co-op N64 game I could think of is Duke Nukem 64, which I played with a friend back then. Other than that I didn't really do a lot of multiplayer on N64 back then like mario kart 64 and golden eye 007. But yeah I'm always interested in co-op games.

I need you to answer some questions about bananas. Is there a way to ruin a banana? (A recipe or by putting something weird on it) How many bananas do you think you eat in a week? Were bananas better when we were kids? How do you get someone into bananas? Should you eat retro bananas? How to get into collecting bananas? Love the channel and look forward to your videos every week. :)
@RetroBirdGaming
@RetroBirdGaming 2 жыл бұрын
Only way to ruin a banana is by throwing it out. I go through about 17 bananas a week. Bananas are just as good now as when we were kids. People can't choose to like bananas. Bananas choose you. Retro bananas are tricky. I'd suggest only baking with them or freezing them. Grocery store will do the trick for collecting.

1. What do you think about the music in retro gaming? What appeals and awes you about it? 2. Do you think the Sega Saturn would have been popular if the Japanese games were being released in USA as well? 3. Do you think the cultural differences had played a role on the status of the consoles? Like PC-Engine and Sega Saturn were popular in Japan but not in USA. 4. What do you think about MAME, the arcade emulator? What is your favorite emulator? 5. Which console that flopped when it was released is now successful from the retro gaming community perspective? Which console deserves an apology letter? 6. If you were a game developer in the 90s, which company would you have worked for and what game would you have planned? Include the genre or a mix of it that you will include. Also just a suggestion: Talk more about arcades as well since it was part of retro gaming as well and us retro gamers have fond memories of it :)

The outro music reminds me of SEGA Genesis music. The lyrics add to it! 😄 It sucks that 1st and 2nd generation gaming is often overlooked. Collections like Atari Vault and Intellivision Lives are helpful because I don't have the right setup for consoles like Atari and Intellivision.

Turbo buttons? Useful or just a nice bonus to have? Controller gimmicks from the past versus now (light guns, motion controls (I know many don't have the Hotseat but other options like that. I know the Roll n rocker isn't the same but I guess that can count as a gimmick controller of the time), that sort of thing). Did the analogue stick feel weird with 3D gaming when it was new? That or CDs with the Sega CD, Turbo CD, Jaguar CD compared to Cartridges? Heavy or Floaty controls whether for characters or driving/racing games retro and modern. It's a thing I question a lot with the games I collect for retro and modern consoles so was curious of your take on it. How long do your scripts take? Inspired things or people you come up with like the bananas, get on my lawn and other details. Otherwise I'd have to look at the questions from one of the community posts when you asked about suggestions for topics if it's still there. They are, check some from 3 months ago and I assume myself and other commenters have a bunch of questions still unanswered or still worthy topics. Other than that I may be up a 6:00am my region the reminder says but I'm still interested to see what others questions are. Awaiting 5 days from now.

Kind of indifferent about them. Better to have them than not though :) Analog sticks never felt unusual to me. My Tuesday videos are unscripted. I just go off a list of bullet points I brainstorm the day before. My Friday videos require a script that takes an entire day. Mostly because it's really hard for me to focus on something like writing with my ADD (Actual ADD. Not the commonly misdiagnosed ADD).

Get another DUO. The lenses rarely ever go bad and if they do, replacement lenses are fairly inexpensive. It's the capacitors that one has to have changed to have a reliable DUO. Also, white duos(R) or (RX) Don't suffer from faulty caps. I refurbish DUOs and can sell you a recapped unit for less than it would cost to buy a used one and then have someone like myself change the capacitors.

what was your experience with computers when you were growing up (especially in regards to gaming)? In any case, will we see any Retro Bird vids on retro PC gaming? Also- do you have any interest in branching out away from specifically retro gaming and game collecting and toward other retro topics/ formats like flipping through magazines or catalogs [Erin Plays goes through old department store catalogs sometimes and those are really fun]? Talking retro TV and film would be cool, too- any interest in that?

Loved this video!! Hope you can bring this concept to 2022! Maybe one Q&A video per month? Maybe you can start 2022 with a video about "the best retro deals you've made in 2021" and let us viewers comment? I feel that my best retro deal was the new Zelda Game & Watch. These 3 classic great games also in japanese versions for 50 us dollar. The best thing in my opinion is for us that never ever played Link's Awakening 1993 to have a great chance to play it in handheld mode with an experience as close as the original (Gameboy) as possible without the need to hunt for a Gameboy and the game for an okay deal and in good condition. My number 2 for best retro deals in 2021 that I've made: Mega Man Wily Wars for Genesis, the physical re-release. I don't have a Genesis so I cannot use this cartridge. But this will work as a great collectors' edition. I also have the game on Genesis Mini from 2019 so I can play it. A third deal that I'm also happy about is Castlevania Anniversary Collection for Switch. The physical release. 8 classic games. I already had 3 of these 8 games thanks to the Mini consoles. Looking forward to 2022: I hope Sonic Origins will get released before summer. That's the compilation of the 5 first classic Sonic games. Maybe this will become my best retro deal next year. Other viewers might have other best retro deals for 2021. Maybe a NES Top Loader console? Who knows? Would be amazing to read many strories about 2021 :)
