It can be caused by the same thing, but one group views it with negative connotations, and the other sees it as comfort from family members.

I actually just did a research paper on hearing voices and interestingly a lot of it depends on your culture. in the west, people tend to associate hearing voices with mental illness so take the voices to have a negative meaning. whereas in some cultures hearing voices is associated with being closer to a higher power (god, the universe, etc) so the voices are seen as beneficial and constructive

Fun fact for the hearing voices, it can actually be cultural on whether or not the voice are bad. There had been cases in the past where hearing voices was seen as communicating with god(s) or the universe by their culture so the voices they were hearing were helpful and acted as more of an angel on the shoulder rather than the devil on the shoulder they act as in cultures where its seen as such. (Source: My Abnormal Psych teacher last year)
