So we do this pithru paksha kadami. Even we may forgot the celebrating the festival same time .but this is vary important. Particularly the Amavasay is vary important. Why do Christians go to the cemetery and place flowers on the tomb during the death anniversaries? The rituals in any religion are for purification of our minds. Ancestors do not ask or demand anything from us. We offer as a gratitude. It is a custom here in TN that when we go to see an elderly person, we take some fruits with us. It is all in our mind that we do something or not.

After death, soul has two destination either moksha or reincarnation, based on their karma. To attain either of this two destination, soul has to travel thru different higher planes, sometimes it gets trapped in earth plane, or finds difficult to travel (this happens usually to people with untimely death or people with unfulfilled desires). Soul cannot do anything to escape from lower plane, so, it's our responsibility to pray for them and help them travel and attain their destination. If they have attained their destination, our rituals will not have any effect on them, but, still it will help some other pithru. That's why, Rituals are done for last 12 generation only, as older generation is estimated to reach their destination already.
