I was one of the contestants on MasterChef, one of the early seasons, and I have to say, Gordon Ramsay is really nice. He is one of the sweetest, kindest men I’ve ever met… when the cameras are off. When the cameras go on he switches personality. And if he goes too far, he reminds us once the cameras are off that it’s just a character he plays. It’s one thing to enjoy the character, just remember the man himself is really nowhere near as cruel as he is shown on TV

Gordon is actually a nice guy. He will talk to fans for a long time, and is genuinely approachable. Anyone who has ever been on MasterChef or any of his shows also confirm he’s a sweetheart. He only screams and yells because in America that persona got more views. So the networks had him lean fully into it and used editing to make him look explosive. One of my favorite stories is that he was once visiting a jail to see how inmates use the kitchen. This one inmate actually impressed him so he promised him that if he got his act together - he would sponsor him once he got out jail. Years later he completed his jail sentence and Gordon put him through chef school. He also personally trained him and then had the inmate work in his restaurants. The inmate is now the head chef in one of Gordon’s 5 star restaurants and his life has completely changed.

He's a big fan of fostering talent. There were two MasterChef contestants that he personally paid tuition for so that they could go to culinary school. Another big reason why he yells is because he is frustrated at these people who claim to have talent and then show that they don't have the skills to back up the ego
@chappellgroan

This isn’t completely true. Gordon confirmed in an AMA that the guy you’re talking about reoffended a few days after his release and went back to prison. Gordon offered a couple other prisoners jobs but they’ve never become the head chef at one of his restaurants.

This is confirmed if you ever watch the British versions of his reality TV shows like Kitchen Nightmares. He's SOOOO toned down compared to the American equivalent. Like, he'll dole out some harsh words if things get really bad but he almost never yells and he always backs those words up with positive reaffirmation of what they're doing right. It's a far more genuine experience and I'll always have a hard time watching the American versions because it FEELS like an act for the sake of bombastic American television.

I think part of it is the psychology of your mother's cooking, theres just nothing like it. The other thing is, Ramsey did a video with his son once and at one poiny he made scrambles eggs, and in the video you see Ramsey adding all this stuff and being just a generally amazing cook...and his son was like "I mean yeah this is good, but its a lot. Like sometimes you just want a regular scrambled egg" 🤣🤣🤣 So i think he can be a bit over complicated sometimes based off that @sadnessofwildgoats

What I love about Gordon is that he ONLY yells at chefs, not those who are learning. Let me explain On the shows he’s working with chefs/restaurant owners, and those who are looking to win a stint in one of his restaurants, he has HIGH expectations of them, and he holds them to those standards (they also know what they’re signing up for, and some of it IS done up for the production of it all) However, on his kid shows, or shows with home cooks/regular people who aren’t chefs, he’s kind, he’s patient, and he’s willing to slow down, show them what they need to do, or ask how he can help. He has a lot of empathy, and he does show it!

MasterChef Jr abruptly became the best cooking tv show and probably the best reality tv show being broadcast, specifically because it had to be less mean and cutthroat and "drama on purpose" because these were kids and Gordon wouldn't let the producers or anyone get away with abusing or manipulating them like is done to many reality tv show guests. even the original MasterChef is no exception to that rule, but Jr is so damn wholesome and sweet

So just some clarification from a Brit here: fish & chips - you would usually put malt vinegar & salt on the chips, and often tartar sauce with fish (it’s a sort of mayo-y sauce with capers). A lot of fish & chip shops exist all over the UK and is like the ideal Friday night takeaway for people to get! There’s always a lot of battered foods and fluffy chips and they’re SO good.

He suggested we get all the kids together, and after he gave his final remarks for the episode, we “chased him out of town” by running with him down the street away from the camera. It's good television! If you can't be arsed to watch full episodes, at least look up the compilations of his best moments while trying to revive dying restaurants and judging their food. The clips of him actually liking the food are more rare and far between, but that just makes them all the more special. The clip of him eating the food at "Momma Cherri's Soul Food Shack" is still as magical as it was the first time I saw it, I'm still sad they closed down soon after he visited. He's basically always very nice to the service staff and reserves his ire for people who mostly genuinly deserve it and also heavily plays it up for the camera. If you're interested in what I mean, there's a genuinly fantastic series he did, where he taught a bunch of prison inmates how to cook and established a bakery where inmates could earn money while still in prison and have future career prospects after they were released. At the time I watched it several years ago the prison bakery had been successfully running for several years at that point. Though no idea if it's still going on.

The location / building maintenance may cost more, the restaurant may be less frequented (hells kitchen makes sense to have the most visitors daily), and other items on the menu may be more expensive to buy and produce! 😀 it also might not sell as well, but it takes a lot of time to produce, which ups the price.

I've always loved Gordon I think because my introduction to him was on the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares. He was only getting mad at people not following his advice or being legitimately unsafe in the kitchen. It really does seem to be a character he plays. His travel show, Uncharted is delightful because he's often humbled as he cooks for chefs in their own element. He has such respect for food and the art of cooking which can get overwhelmed admittedly, by watching the vein pulse in his forehead and the copious amounts of bleeping. Thank you so much for this review! As a Gordon fan and someone who gets to go to Vegas every few years, this and the other Vegas videos are legitimately very helpful when choosing where to splurge.

So, fun fact- all burgers *need* to be well done. A steak can be pretty much raw, because all the bacteria sits on the outside of the meat. You give it a quick scorch on each side, kill anything on its surface, and it's good to go. Burgers are ground, which means that the bacteria is spread all throughout the meat and it needs to be cooked all the way through. "Medium rare" burgers just put you at risk of salmonella and e. coli.

I agree with saf, well done burgers are good. If the meat is freshly ground you can cook it medium rare because steak before it's ground, bacteria can't penetrate the skin, but after you grind it, it breaks that barrier and invites bacteria and becomes a breeding ground. That being said, i have never cooked frozen burgers anything less than well done and they have been good. Well done doesn't mean burnt or dry, it really all depends on how you cook it. I sear my burgers and then baste it like a steak with butter/bbq sauce to cook it through. Never dry, never burned.

Lots of Brit input already but here’s mine: Fish and chips is classically served covered in salt and vinegar (or imitation vinegar), with mushy peas, curry sauce or maybe gravy on the side - or tipped straight over the top. I prefer lemon to vinegar and most people think I’m weird. Battered sausage is not a ‘banger’. On paper that should make sense but it just doesn’t. Pigs in blankets are bacon wrapped, not pastry wrapped, I’ve never seen that before. Sausage meat wrapped in pastry is a sausage roll. British soups do not have the French onion soup cheese thing going on, but Stilton and broccoli soup is a fairly common menu item. Chicken tikka masala was designed for the 1960s British pallet, so it’s not spicy, especially when compared to most curries. STP is excellent but should be served with custard. Scotch egg is usually made with a chicken egg, so it’s bigger and more satisfying. Served hot or cold. That said, I’m impressed with the research and knowledge and the commitment to trying the classics, it seems British food gets an unfair shake.

American pigs in a blanket are pastry wrapped so the ones they tried are more like the american version using British sausage. Most Americans will have had them made of hot dogs wrapped in premade croissant dough that comes in a cardboard tube.

“Banger in the mouth” is a reference to a tv show called Arrested Development where a character goes “undercover” as a Mrs Doubtfire, but he does it poorly. He’s known to talk in accidental innuendoes that make him sound gay when he says he’s straight. All the other characters in the show know he’s wrong but don’t mention it for reasons. Thanks for explaining all of this, love the insight! 😊

The fish and chips is definitely closer to the American version too. Re the no gravy or peas. But yes like the other person said pigs in blankets are pastry wrapped in the USA. I’m not sure how someone would react to getting a sausage wrapped in bacon when they ordered pigs in blankets, but they would definitely be confused bc it wouldn’t be what they thought they ordered. Gordon just subbed out the typical type of sausage in the middle for a British type of sausage.

There are areas, where you don't eat it medium well or well done apparently. Learned that the "hard" way as a 13-year-old somewhere on the road during a family vaccation in France. Back then I ordered a ground beef steak (it was like a burger patty) and even though I asked them to make it well done (because we've heard before that they prefer it rather bloody in this area), it was still pink to even reddish inside. Still ate it, but left the red parts out😅 Also just googled a bit, eating ground beef well done (esp. with bought ground meat and burger patties) is often done for food safety reasons. Yet in a restaurant like Gordon's, where they probably ground the beef themselves, you can eat your burger medium rare or rare as well. Maybe it's common in finer dining, but I don't know about that😅
@Eventide215
@Eventide215 4 ай бұрын
@@ellianaellrow The difference there is "ground beef" vs "ground beef steak". Ground beef bought at a store is usually like leftover meats ground down into a mix. So you cook it well done since certain cuts of meat aren't good to eat less than that. If you're ordering "ground beef steak" burgers then it's fine because that's essentially a steak ground up and made into a patty. So you can eat it less than well done. Either way, a lot of people still prefer the burgers well done because of texture.

Fish and chips used to be considered a working class treat back in the 70s/80s, cos there weren't many takeaway options and it was cheap. Now, it's kinda pricey. My local chippy charges £14.79 for fish, chips, and mushy peas or a sauce, which is about $19. Oh, and back in the day, fish and chips used to be served/wrapped in pages from unsold newspapers, which is why there were newspapers as part of the decor at Ramsay's place. Kinda gross really, but that was outlawed years ago.

HI! Pastry Chef here! Ive been in the industry almost 10 years and every single chef i know that has worked with chef Gordon has said he his literally the nicest person on the planet. Ive worked in a few hotels and i have some chef friends that worked in Michellin star restaurants and they all say Gordon is super respectful, very open, listens to others, patient, always make sure that the chefs eat! You can hear is actual angry voice during an episode of Hells Kitchen where one of the girls got burned due to the negligence of another chef. His actual angry voice is terrifying Edit: I don't remember the episode but here's the clip kzbin.infogK3GIdOW-VQ?si=zjl0DCq47UuJDqpU
