If you're in the DMV, there's a really dope Indonesian spot in Kensington, MD called Artha Rini. Small family owned place and they cater events at the Indonesian embassy. Definitely worth checking out! Their shaved ice desserts are especially good. As a Filipino, it reminds me of halo halo.

The Indonesian noodles, definitely need soup in it! The original one is not that dry unless you order it dry, it goes with the soup, the sambal, the chili sauce, fried shallot, and Pangsit crackers. The key ingredients are galangal, Indonesian Sweet Soy Sauce, Lemon grass, Indonesian Bailey leaves, Kafeer lime leaves, garlic, sesame oil, chicken stock, mushroom, and other spices on the chef's taste. Indonesian here anyway.

Thanks so much for the insights. I can definitely see how a side of soup, some sambal, chili sauce, fried shallots, and Pangsit crackers would have livened things up. It's good to get the perspective of an actual Indonesian. Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate it so much.

Technically, we have 2 different types of Mie Ayam, dry one called Yamien and one that comes with the broth which called as Mie Ayam. Rendang can be called as one type of curry if you don't mind bc it has complexity that similar to it. While Malay's rendang might be juicier than Indonesian's, ours has a jerky like consistency and lot more intensified flavor thanks to it's long preparation time, which can take about 8h to prepare. Basically what you get there isn't just a gravy but a version of spiced coconut cream that seperated from it's oil with a bit of it's own oil to make it into that thick gravy consistency. Basically you name several ingredients bright like galangal, lemongrass, coconut milk, cumin, pepper, salt, and many more... I wouldn't even remember all of it. I can only say I'm glad that you enjoy it. Thanks for trying out our soul food!😊

Definitely not the best sample of Indoneian food, but it have its essence correct, sate is not peanutty enough I agree. Hate to say but I think those are Indonesian food that has been "westernized".

Bro, your mie ayam sux.. it's too dry. Hope you can come to Indonesia to experience the authentic one. It's supposed to have chicken broth aside. Or, in some cities in Indonesia they pour the braised chicken over the noodles so it's not dry.

All these dishes should be eaten while still hot or warm (or for rice dishes, at least the rice should be hot or warm). Yes, your mie ayam is too dry. it should come with some broth or maybe some chili sauce/sambal with a level of spiciness you can adjust as you like. For the vegetable curry sauce, I like it more garlicky, with a little kick of galangal, ginger, and lemongrass so the curry doesn't have an overpowering taste.
@Vablonsky6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insights. I think having a broth or some sambal would have been nice with the mie ayam. And, notes of garlic, galangal, ginger, and/or lemongrass in that curry sauce that I had would have hit the spot too. I need to eat more Indonesian food whenever I can find it to gain more knowledge about it.

Mie, Ayam impressed with this video! Thanks for sharing such delicious and rare Indonesian food! I too don't know much about Indonesian food but there's a lady at my work that occasionally brings in some sticky rice with pork or chicken in the middle of it wrapped in banana leaf. Her neighbor makes it and is from Indonesia. Sounds like that piece of "bbq" chicken was a little disappointing. May be a peanut sauce would help? Overall another good review, Vablonsky! Thanks again.

Yeah...I think a lot of us are not very familiar with Indonesian food. People who've traveled to Indonesia might be. There's places in California, here in the US, that has some Indonesian presence. With restaurants. But, yeah, the Indonesian diaspora is much smaller in scale it seems than the Chinese, for example.

That food you described sounds like the sticky rice wrapped parcels that are part of Chinese/Cantonese tradition too. Maybe, there is a Chinese influence. I don't know.

Using our Toishanese detective skills we can assume Mee = noodles and Ayam = chicken yielding an oddly plain-jane Chicken Noodles. No sauce is unusual since even Malaysian Char Kway Teow has a little sauce. Also not a huge fan of pakoras. Similar flaky pastry/fritter at dim sum would be the roast pork triangle pastry. Breaks apart in your hands and too dry. Keep chasing V.
@Vablonsky7 ай бұрын
Yeah. The dryness of the mie ayam was surprising. Char kway teow does have a residual moisture about it. Like you said.
@Vablonsky7 ай бұрын
I do like the cha siu so (roast pork pastry). When done right, the flaky pastry has a good bodily integrity and holds up well. The crumbly kind that is soft is no good.
