I Battle CULEX For The First Time EVER! | 100 Jump Challenge |

Super Mario RPG is my favorite game of all time, however, I've never attempted to fight against Culex (The Hardest Boss). Today I finally face Culex and attempt to prove once and for all of my God Gamer Skill!

Fun fact about Culex that I just recently learned. His Japanese dialogue references his character design. With the whole Final Fantasy thing, his design is sprite-based compared to the isometric 3D renders for everyone else. So his JP dialogue says things like "I'm interested in the 3rd dimension" and "I am all powerful, yet can only exist on a flat surface". I'm hoping he will still be a 2D sprite in the remake.

Oh yeah, I saw this in a video too recently. I love that! I wish they would have translated that joke in the English version, that's hilarious. I wonder if the remake will keep Culex 2D. 🤔

Maybe somebody already found the information and shared, but here is from the wiki. Shredder is an attack used by Culex and Smithy in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The attack envelops the player's party with a bright pink light and eliminates all beneficial status effects on the team such as ATTACK UP! or DEFENSE UP!. It will also degrade the boosts of the Troopa Pin, Ghost Medal, and Quartz Charm. Congratulations on beating Culex! You were way over leveled for him, it looks like. Lol Looking forward to seeing you do the 101 jumps. (First jump doesn't count.) Break it into intervals of 20s.

Nice! Culex is awesome. Looking forward to seeing what they do with him in the remake. Shredder is basically like Dispel from Final Fantasy. It takes any defensive or offensive boosts you have (through Bracer, Energizer, Geno Boost, and the like) and gets rid of them. Final Smithy uses it too.

@@Daxle Yeah, Shredder seems like a pretty mundane attack, but it can be brutal if you're really, really unlucky. So yeah, when you had Geno do Geno Boost and Shredder came right after, that cancelled out Geno Boost. Grrr! Another fun fact about Culex. The Chow next door references the fact that Culex is next door ("always talking about a crystal" and so on. After defeating Culex, the Chow mentions that the guy next door isn't there anymore.

Congrats on the endeavor! Hopefully before the remake comes out you’ll be able to do 100 jumps! Also, do you think that if there is a September Nintendo Direct, they’ll announce porting the OG Mario RPG to Switch Online?

Thank you! I switched to practicing on the original cartridge, and I'll let y’all know if I get the 100 jumps. It's possible, I think they might wait to bring smrpg online until after the remake so people won't lose hype by playing the OG right before the remake. But, they could announce it for coming to switch online just after the remake is out.

It's just too hard, man. You need incredibly good hand-eye coordination to execute a nearly frame-perfect input like 80 times in a row. The only time I was able to do this was on an emulator where I could slow it down and use save states.

congrats! the Lazy shell armor completely breaks the entire game really by making it super easy. If you really want a challenge against Culex try without using Lazy Shell armor, I bet it will feel really rewarding

Defeating Culex (I pronounce it: cue-lex) is quite simple. My go-to party once you have all five is strictly: Mario, Bowser, Peach. Bowser in the middle is a must, especially in Nimbus Land where Dodo takes the middle character out of the initial battle for the one-on-one. He has the highest defense, so it works. For Culex, you don't need the super suit at all. The super suit is outstanding with its immense boost to its attack power The Jump boots also would have helped Mario more with the Earth Crystal. If you give Peach the Lazy Shell Armor, she will be taking either 0 or 1 HP damage from the majority of the attacks handed out by anything except for Culex's melee attack and Blast. Giving the Amulet to anyone other than Bowser is not a good idea at all, as it drops their Speed stat by 30. It does not affect Bowser's speed stat at all. How I defeat him is simply spam regular attacks on the crystals until they fall, and just give Peach the Scrooge Ring for the battle and have her focus on Therapy and not Group Hug as it heals higher. Also, with the Lazy Shell, it drops the wearer's offensive power by 75% or so while their defenses rise by the same amount, which is why you had seen Peach's healing only double digits instead of her usual 150+ for group hug. Also noticed you had used items to do what Geno Boost does naturally. Activate that power's critical hit and you raise both attack and defense. Play through the Culex fight several times and you will get better with time. If you use Mallow's Psychopath ability on each of them you will see their current HP, which will give you the knowledge of which crystals to target in the order of their HP: Wind, Ice, Fire, Earth. I also noticed you still had Peach using the War Fan when she could have the Frying Pan. It is the 'metal plate' that the guy in the shop of Moleville sells. You can buy it from him just before entering the volcano, which is also the same point you can get the Fertilizer for the plant to grab the Lazy Shell. In Bowser's Castle, the best outcome you can get at the Puzzle Doors is to go through the two Battle Zones and the two Action Zones. If you enter the Trivia Zones, get the answers wrong to return to the choice of doors and take the next one. In this way you'll get the ultimate weapons for the group. With regard to the Ultra Jump, that ability maxes out at 15 / 16 jumps. It follows the same principal as the Super Jump as far as the timing goes, and there is no difference in the timing of any of the jumps at all for Super Jump. You need only get the rhythm down and, as Star Fox 64 and onward says, "Never Give Up. Trust your instincts." Buying the Scrooge Ring (50 Frog Coins) and giving it to Mario will help with saving your FP's for your Super Jumps, as it cuts the cost of all abilities by half. One technique that I use when playing the game is unfocusing your eyes and just stare at the screen at the spot that you want Mario to be when you hit Y to continue the cycle. I saw that you are doing what I've always done over the decades: when counting the number of successful jumps, you start counting at 5 when the 1-up tones begin to play. At 30 jumps she will award the Attack Scarf, which boosts Mario's attack power but removes the Jump Shoes' ability to damage all enemies. If memory serves, the Super Suit gives Mario BACK the ability to damage the enemies immune to being jumped on. Finally, I believe the Shredder ability removes all stat boosts that you have on your characters, but I could be wrong. I never paid the ability any attention as it didn't seem to do ANYTHING at all. My party for the game after Merrymore along with their final equipment loadout: Mario (Lazy Shell, Work Pants, Attack Scarf / Super Suit), Bowser (Drill Claw, Work Pants, Amulet), Peach (Frying Pan, Lazy Shell, Scrooge Ring), Mallow (Sonic Cymbals, Work Pants, ---), Geno (Shooting Stars, Work Pants, ---). Yes, I have them with the Work Pants over the Legendary gear you buy from Croco. The earliest you can get the 100 jump challenge done is aaaalll the way back when you fight Mack for the first star piece.

Congrats! It's cool to be able to go back to a childhood game and finish something you never thought you'd be able to do. Those Super Jumps are REALLY tough to get. I wonder if they'll alter the timing or anything in the remake

Yeah it was definitely satisfying lol. I hope they keep it the same timing. It would suck to practice getting the 100 jumps on the original, only to have to adjust to the remake.

Just to remind everybody, the 100 jumps are only possible with original hardware on a CRT, because you won't have input lag at all that way. You wont be able to do it legit on a emulator because there are frame variations and slight input lag.

Congrats! If no one said anything, shredder essentially gets rid of any status boosts. So if you used Geno Boost, it would eliminate it
