I visited this amazing place in the 1960's, well before it became overrun with tourists. There was no entrance fee, in fact the only building was a little kiosk selling drinks and refreshments. The climb to the top was much more difficult, in places it was just ladders strapped to the side of the rock with no supports or protection. You could say it is now like a stroll in the park Ha Ha! From what I can remember the palace on top of the rock was not as visible as it is now. I also remember that there were some enterprising locals who had set up a stall at the wall paintings and were asking for payment if you tried to take a photograph! Certainly a highlight of my visit to Sri Lanka (or Ceylon as I knew it) along with the visit to Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth. Thank you for your video.

Hi Syifa, Great clip! The value of visiting the Sigiriya its a place full of history and science. The ponds around it is connected to the top pond and there is an irrigation system. There are more and more to write. The price tag is there since it is one of the worlds wonders. By the way it is one of the palace and surrounded there is a very advanced city with science and art. You have covered 5 percent of the Sigiriya Experience could be thats why it is just a rock for you personally. For the Elephants there is a tradition in the country and we take care of the elephants. We respect your thoughts and we take care of them. With our traditions and Buddhism background we have our own ways. It is similar to people keep pets in their houses. Kudos to the Taxi driver, he explained your most possible way he could. Further more, its a very natural thing a girl along travel in a different country and people are confused whether you are a tourist or a worker. That could be a reason they ask you questions and try identify you. Basically we travel and we will need to spend little bit money there and of cause country to country the prices tags are different. Hope you will learn more when you travel more destinations. Making a budget to your travel by checking out the price tags prior to visits will help you to have very positive perception and enjoy your journey more. Cheers!

The rock has been overpriced deliberately to reduce number of tourists. Most of the time, only the people who are interested in archeology will find the value of it. Sad to say, you missed the museum and so many places when you're coming down or it was not in the video. Tuk-tuk driver is a nice guy 👌👌👌
@SyifaAdriana5 жыл бұрын
I understand the logic behind this, Yasiru. However, for a $30 fee, there is no flyer or even sign explaining the history of this for visitors so it's difficult for regular visitors to understand this without having to hire local tour guide, which will cost another money. Does it make it sense? As a tourist, we all not always have the knowledge of everything, sometimes even the energy to study every history or the access to guidebook or internet while on the road :-) I didnt have enough time to explore the museum as I was timed by my tuk tuk driver.. Thank you for watching this video!
@SusithaRavindaSenarath5 жыл бұрын
@@SyifaAdriana There is a whole museum ( close to the ticket counter area) about Sigiriya , the history and everything. How did you miss that.
@MaheshKaluarachchi5 жыл бұрын
I agree with Syifa here, for the $30 at least they could have given a booklet or placed more sign boards to guide tourists. Even for locals it's very helpful as many have no idea about the history of specific places of the rock. I have been to Sigiriya with a local guide and what I learnt about the technology used back in the day for the palace was mind blowing. This is something Sri Lankan tourist board can improve more.

@raveenthennakoon29995 жыл бұрын
8:33 You say that it is a beautiful color. It is due to some geography stuff which I’ve learnt at school yet can’t remember now :) Yet it has a nice legend attached to it. In our literature, we have a mythical king named “King Raavana” and Sigiriya rock is considered to be his palace/fortress. That nice, almost vertical shape of that side of the rock was happened due to a slash by the sword of King Raavana. King Raavana story is mentioned in “Raamaayanaya” book.

For us its something precious and a lot of work goes in to maintaining the ruins the art works etc..hence the price.. this was built in the 5th century. A.D. its always a choice to buy a ticket or not. What i simply said was it's not just a rock it has alot of history behind it.

The volume of people is most important than anything else and in this case and I'm sure many people will stay away from it. Any and most of the museums in Manhattan is under $25.00 and you won't be able to finish in one day. World famous central park of Manhattan is free with some daily shows....

Hello Al Demir, thank you for watching! I do agree with Tamara with regards the history is rich but $30 doesn't seem to justify as the stairs seem to be fragile. There is no flyer or anything written about the history for the visitors to understand the contextual of the importance of this place. That's why I think $30 seems a bit too much for foreign visitors considering the economical context in Asian countries. I know locals justify this entrance fee, but until you pay 5000 something rupees yourself for the entrance fee, I think it's difficult to understand the financial strain of having to pay that money, as a foreigner from another Asian country. 🙂
