I know folks think of gyms when it comes to showers and understandably so, but another good alternative is truck stops. Truck stop gas stations have showering facilities mainly for truck driver customers, but they are open to anyone willing to pay. They are usually $8 to $15.

I was homeless for a very short period .Thank God it was only a short period. This project your doing has inspired me to donate. And the words Habitat For Humanity clenched it. I am 64 and I have been blessed to be building my own cabin from scratch for the past 6 years. Although I haven't finished building yet, I have everything I need. Habitat Re-store has helped immensely! I always find something I can use there And VERY inexpensive. I have 3 different Re-stores near me and I visit all of them as often as I can. Thanx for posting this.:)🌱

Donated. Thank you for bringing awareness to this desperation. SO many people just look DOWN on the homeless without thinking they are human beings with emotions too. When I was addicted to Opiates in my 20's, I was homeless a few times. It truly opens your eyes to how cruel this world can truly be, not all of them choose to be homeless. A lot of the ones I got to know & befriend were homeless due to nobody willing to hire them because of disabilities or etc, and the Government denies to give them Social Security monthly income for being disabled. "America" is better often described as "The Land Of The Wealthy"

Between the military, and my own homelessness, I learned the value of good, expensive socks. proper wool socks can be worn in 100 degree weather for three days and barely smell. Wool is moisture wicking, so you don't get wet feet and dry feet means no blisters. I pay 25$ a pair now and it's worth every penny.

I just want to bring attention to the fact that while Habitat for Humanity is a fantastic organization, and you should absolutely donate to them, housing the homeless is only half the battle. Many homeless lack ID, work history, and all kinds of documentation that prevent them from ever being reintegrated with society. Without these barriers removed, homeless people will never be able to keep a job and therefore sustain themselves. We need ways to reincorporate homeless people into the workforce effectively, and this can only be done through politics, so please keep up with your local representatives' policies, maybe write them a letter, this is an issue I would really like to see addressed in my life.

And just in case someone reading this needs help. Goodwill always has blankets and such available at a minimum rate. Several churches have food, and all you have to do is ask. Also YMCA will let you shower at their facilities 3 times a year for free. But I always tried to put something in the donation box. And truck stops offer showers at a minimal rate and some rent cots I believe. It could keep you out of the cold. Also some places in Texas (where I live) offer cooling centers in the summer. Any public library will let you come in. AND use their internet. It WAS free some time ago. Also if your near a beach you can usually find a shower there. Some folks even provide a mobile washing machine and dryer to wash your clothes for free. So if you need help just ask ..... :)🌱

I travel the country living out of my car and I know that feeling of feeling “less than” others when out in public. Especially when my doors are open and people walk by and can see inside. Most people probably just assume I am homeless. Fortunately, this is the life I choose and money is not an issue. So I am able to reassure myself that while they have a home, I have freedom. While I love this life of minimalism and self sufficiency, I couldn’t imagine not having the choice to be here. I am grateful that I can be content with such a life, but hopeful I am never in a position where it is my only option
