Honestly I think we've been playing as the rival in Sun and Moon and Sword and Shield. think about it. We have the type advantage now and if our rivals are the happy go lucky protag types and we're more normal... doesn't that make us the rivals? Also we straight up battle Hau in the same style as Red v Blue except we're in Blue's position. WE ARE THE RIVAL! (of course that's also how all rivalries work but you know. we're the meaner more competent rival.)

I would have loved it if you became the champion first, Red comes in, and their Pokemon are so ridiculously OP that you have no way to win, showing that that reality must have the rival lose in all universes, even when they are the main character.

the thing is I don't think there's a way to make the pokemon unbeatable. so you'd always have a way to win with great play. Even with super busted stats and moves. Unless they where modded beyond belief.
