I Believe Planned Protests Will Be Hijacked, 2012 Protest Different from Endsars Protest - Ejiofor

The underlying goal of the 2012 protest and the planned August 1 Protest might be similar but the circumstances have changed, people are hungrier and desperate and these protests might degenerate into a riot. The colliding interests of people in support of this current administration and those against might compound the security challenges the nation is already facing, protesters should shelve this idea and settle for dialogue

When Tinubu and Buhari led street protests against Goodluck Jonathan's government, the activity was seen as constitutional, democratic and part of the human rights of the people. What makes this one different in the perception of those calling for it to be shelved or cancelled? Tinubu should not be accorded any sympathy since his propaganda machinery has resorted to using ethnic and religious labels to discredit the protest. The danger of stifling the planned protest is more destructive because people are hungry, starving and dying. Anger that is bottled up for too long could lead to suicidal bombing of public places or armed resistance against the security agencies of the state and, ultimately, the removal of the government of the day to restore peace and order, even though there will be increased fatalities and bloody consequences on both sides of the conflicts. How are Nigerians assured that if they shelve the protest, the government will not later go after the organisers? Will the citizens also be assured that the economic indices which are currently asphyxiating will be eased and drastically mitigated by the taxation-prone Tinubu government which only understands the economics of tightening the noose on the necks of the masses to send people to their early graves?

The problem is not with the prostesters but the government and law enforcement agents. The law enforcement agents always go after the juggler of the perceived enemies of state based on ethnici , religious, and political considerations. An example is the 2023 election, whereby ballot boxes were snatched under the watch of the security agents who looked the other way depending on thier preferred political party. The planned protest has not yet started, but it has already been given ethnic, religious and political tag. How then can you expect it to succeed?. If the government is sincere, we should restructure Nigeria to defuse ethnic, political and religious tension and stop playing the Ostrich or pusuing rat while the house is on fire. It is only truth that will set us free.
