This song has always made me think of an affair like the protagonist is The other woman. And the dog she's betting on is her love for this man that she can't have because he's in a relationship with another woman. But still she continues cuz she's desperate for his love.

When I think of this song, I think of the protagonist being a part of an affair. Where she bets on “losing dogs” aka couples that are struggling with infidelity and she pays for her place by the ring. Watching the couples fight as the protagonist knows she’s part of the reason that’s why she’s so close to the ring.

But once the protagonist realizes that no one‘s winning in these dog fights ( the protagonist, love interest, and the protagonist love interest, partner) they slowly start to feel bad for the things they’ve done. Then starts to wish worse upon themselves.

Yeah! I also interpreted this line as the protagonist lamenting her tendency to self sabotage, just when things are looking up. It brings another layer of sadness to the song because she seems to feel so powerless.

i feel like, in the lryics “i wana feel it” is negative, because when you get used to (like losing in this case) stuff like victory seem so hopeful and unbelievable,and assuming the protagonist has an addition they dont want to get addicted to false hope,

When I think of this song, I think that Mitski is singing about someone who cheers for people don’t have anyone to cheer for them. She wants to be there for someone who faces life alone. Kind of like a mother.

i feel like how you' be looking in my eyes when i come and someone to watch me die could be a change in scenery for the first verses where the love interest was the one in the dog fight and losing and we know the love interest has another 'baby' so in the end protagonist himself is fighting and they're personally losing and dying while the love interest watches it. idk if that makes sense

I can't help but think in my relationship with my ex-boyfriend while I hear this song, like, I'm always there by his side wanting recognition, I dont really want to be his partner again but I can't help this part of me that knows that no matter how much he wants to be with someone we were just made for the other. And the fact I know I should cut all contact because it makes me sick to think like this, but just a message from him makes me feel happy. It is just like a cycle I don't want to move on from, I repeat and repeat until I can't even know what I am waiting for. And Im not like the jealous type, I would never make him leave his partner. I just keep it to myself. Waiting he will reach out to me again like a spectator while he struggles with his life. I know everything is wrong even if I'm not doing damage directly. Just like the song I guess.

Maybe the part of the ring is the character breaking up the couple. The dogs think she is a good guy for helping so they wont die alone. Meanwhile she was the reason for the fight the whole time (aka she bet on losing the dogs)

I feel like she chose someone in a downward spiral, like a married man who is down and unhappy with his life. And betting on losing dogs is a metaphor for feeling empathy for the emotionally dying people. As an empath, sometimes when I feel triumphant or finally happy, I tend to mess things up just so I dont feel guilty. Dying with the person you love is bittersweet.
