Same thing happened to my DSM. I was driving it along and the engine just died. Didn't sound bad, but sheared the teeth off the timing belt. The failure was caused by the inner CV boot being torn and throwing its grease up into the timing cover. Took out all 8 exhaust valves and guides. Valve seats and pistons were ok and the piston tops polished up.
