I Booked The CHEAPEST and SMALLEST Cabin on a Cruise

Күн бұрын

I’ve just disembarked a cruise where I had the cheapest cabin on the entire ship, it was less than half the size of the average hotel room in the US and it was located right in the middle of the ship with no windows or access to daylight at all.
On the ship there were 293 inside cabins which meant that there could be almost 1000 people in inside cabins just on this cruise alone. Inside cabins are a huge part of the cruise market, but cruise lines rarely advertise them. I wanted to find out why.
I did wonder if I’d miss the outside space, especially given that we were cruising to some beautiful places but when I saw the price difference between an inside and a balcony, I knew I had to give it a go. I do get seasick and the seasickness bags did come out during this cruise but I didn’t think too much about that when booking my cabin.
I hoped that the lack of daylight wouldn’t be too much of a problem, I hoped that we wouldn’t feel claustrophobic and that the cabin would be clean with plenty of storage. I knew the ship was built in 2001 but I hoped that the cabins had been refurbished since then.
This image and this plan on the Norwegian website was all that I had to go on and to me, this looked like a TV from 2001. I wondered if this cruise would be like stepping back in time.
On a cruise you can either book a cruise fare that includes picking your cabin location on the ship, or you can just let the cruise line decide and usually this is cheaper. I wanted to take this cruise as cheaply as possible so decided to let the cruise line pick. This type of cabin is called a guaranteed cabin because you’re guaranteed to at least get what you’ve paid for, but these cabins are usually the left over cabins as everybody picks the “better” cabins.
The Norwegian Sun is 13 decks high and 848 ft long which is about 8 planes in a line. She has inside cabins from deck 4 all the way up to deck 10, I could be given a cabin on any deck and from right at the front of the ship, to right at the back.

I could have a cabin with an adjoining door to the cabin next door, I could have one in a ‘noisey’ location, I could even have one which was sideways compared to the rest of the cabins. I had no idea.
I was secretly hoping that I would get a cabin in the middle of the ship so that I didn’t have a long walk to get down to the lower decks for dinner, or up to the higher decks for snacks in the buffet. My cabin was actually further from the buffet than I would have liked, but more about that later.
Apart from that I wasn’t really worried about my location, and it’s a good job I wasn’t because many would say that I was given one of the worst locations on the ship.
A couple of weeks before the cruise I received an email saying that my luggage tags were ready to print out and on these luggage tags was the cabin number 7314.
I went straight to the Norwegian cruise line website and found my cabin right at the front of deck 7. On most cabin decks you’ll find that the whole deck is cabins so I was interested to see that my cabin was between the art gallery and the kids clubs. I had visions of the kids running up and down the corridor but hoped it wouldn’t be like that.
The inside cabin we were staying in was around 13 metres squared which is very similar to the size of a shipping container. It was 9 foot wide which is around the width of a bus but it wasn’t as long as a bus, think of the cabin as a short little bus.
These cabins are made fully formed before they are put onto the cruise ship so I knew that they couldn’t have made too many changes since the ship was launched. Occasionally cruise ships will add extra cabins and sometimes they actually split the cruise ship in half to fit in another section, but once a cabin is in a cruise ship it’s pretty much there forever.

My first apartment had no windows in the bedroom. I happen to like sleeping in a very dark room, so it worked for me. Eight days on a cruise with a windowless cabin would be a piece of cake for me, especially knowing I could always leave the cabin and go see the outside pretty much whenever I liked.

Hey guys (and emma), I am not a cruise ship specialist, but i am a engineer on board of other seagoing vessels. I have one remark on the fresh water tip. The reason it is cold is because it has been standing still inside of the pipes inside of the accomodatation which are cooler than the storage tank. So although it may seem like you are getting 'fresher' water from the tap, it is actually water which has been standing still inside of the pipes. I would recommend letting the tap run so you can be a little more certain that the water you are using has been filtered and cleaned not so long ago. You could allways put it in the fridge in you cabin to let it cool down faster I guess.

All right, Emma, maybe you don't read your comments because you get too many of them, but I just ran across your channel, and I simply have to say that your videos are the absolute best around. Sometimes, it's remarkable the talent and professionalism that you encounter on youtube, and you take the cake. (That's an American expression that means that you are the best.) (You probably already knew that.) I have never been on a cruise and I probably never will--I'm an introvert and I don't like being around a lot of people--plus I get very seasick--but watching your videos is the next best thing. You know what your next project could be? A youtube video on how to make good youtube videos. No kidding. Wow. I'm impressed. You are a talented and charming person indeed! Well done! A+!

We always just get the inside cabin, whatever costs the least and it has always been super comfy. I don't get spending money on the cabin as we are always out and doing things - even if just reading a book. I would maybe understand it more if you are not going somewhere warm, but still. Would rather spend money on extras like restaurants or excursions and such.

We had flurries this morning and they are calling for snow tonight (it will be a dusting). I enjoy the Jan/Feb?March cruises when we have snow that is this deep! Have returned and found the parking lot covered and cars snowed in. Boy Scouts were digging them out for just $20. A real bargin from my side of the snow covered car. And we do get addicted quickly to cruising, so be forewarned.

My cabin on my first cruise was directly underneath the Kids Club. I did hear footsteps running around occasionally, but I was in my cabin at night mostly, so the Club was closed, so not a big deal. Being a solo traveler, I was put where ever there was a free cabin. At least it had a porthole, and it was very close to the outside spas.

Thanks for sharing your experience on the NCL Sun. Here's a tip for traveling and at home. It's perfectly fine to connect a USB cable to the TVs USB ports in the back. This will let you charge your device with only the cable. When the TV swings out from the wall, it's much easier to access the USB ports on the side.

This is so interesting. I have no interest in taking a cruise but can’t help but enjoy the video. I think that’s because you don’t waste any time, you talk about the experience from start to finish and it’s full of information. So many other creators use so much filler content, but you are here giving the people what they come for. Can I ask what camera you use for your action shots such as eating the cookie - or is that just iPhone clarity? Thanks again for making such great videos

In Norway we call such a fruit drink for 'saft' (the squash one)... I guess it can be translated as 'juice'... except 'juice' is the pure stuff like apple or orange juice so if you asked for the latter but wanted the first you'd have to clarify what you actually meant.

As a marine engineer, having a inside cabin actually reduces your seasickness. And if you don't mind the potential noise from the engines, having one on a lower deck will reduce it even more. This is because it reduces the relative motion you experience. Although to be fair, I have heard claims that being able to visually see the terrain going past from the car windows is helpful, since it aligns your inner ear fluids with your eyes. But I suspect this doesn't help much on a ship, since the ocean is flat and featureless.

Good review of the Norwegian Sun. I was on the exact ship one month ago going to South America and the Panama Canal. It was very clean, my inside cabin was actually larger than yours, and a good value. I travel, mostly for the ports and to experience crossing the Panama Canal, and then secondarily the cruise ship itself. So I was very pleased with my adventure. The buffet on this ship was actually significantly smaller than three other NCL smaller ships I was on in 2023.🌹

I have a cruise booked in a 99sq ft studio room on Norwegian. I like small and cozy rooms though. And after my discounts, the cruise is cheaper than a motel 6 room! The room has a virtual window, and a private lounge just for studio room guests. My travel partner snores too loud for me to share a room with them so its a good solution for me. But its definitely not suitable for bigger guests with a lot of luggage.

12:55 - We visited Gibraltar on a Holland America cruise last summer. I have to say that Gibraltar was definitely a highlight. Really great cruise stop.

That sounds like the perfect cabin for me - particularly the aircon. But I am easy, all I need is a bed and access to the ship facilities. I love it proper dark when I sleep, so no windows is important; the aircon blowing on my head is a huge bonus. 😎

I noticed that the lamps and usb socket were above the bed rather than beside it which I would call a minor flaw. As for the corner with the sofa, I suspect as you did that this was a TV corner when the ship was built. So the priority was TV over shower.

We've never done anything other than a balcony room. I would get claustrophobic without being able to see daylight.

A cabin lower down, and further towards the stern, will always be more comfortable than one higher and closer to the bow. So if you had a chance to choose, and comfort was important to you, certainly something to remember.

I did the same in October on the Enchantment. Loved it. Right behind the bar at the centrum. I could feel the pounding bass every night into midnight-ish. That's the only thing that might put off some people. I was 4881, dead center of ship. Easy reach of everything.

I was on that ship I’m 2019, that is a great ship on a balcony cabin and I had a good time on it.

My wife and I do inside cabins all the time. We enjoy our cruises and we’re just fine with these cabins.

This looks like a really decent inside cabin. Totally agree re: the sofa - on my cruise on P&O Azura last week, I realised how much I missed having somewhere to sit other than just the bed!

I've taken to packing a multi-country adapter and using it on the European outlet. That way I get an extra plug, and the adapter has several USB ports. That way I don't even have to check to see if the TV has USB outlets to charge my mobile devices. I swapped from inside to balcony staterooms after my January / February 2020 cruise (where I came within hours of being stranded in China, but that's a long story). I spent a few decades booking guarantee inside ones, but my financial situation has improved considerably since then. I do not knock anybody for deciding that is the right move for their situation. I'm once again considering NCL as it seems shared tables have vanished. The last time I was on an NCL ship I liked most of the features, but they have no idea how to handle single people at dinner. Now it seems that I'm going to dine alone no matter what line I'm on, so I'll once again consider NCL.

I like inside cabins, mostly because I have to have total dark to sleep. However, I will make my choice for location. I prefer the aft of the ship and higher up. I don't get seasick and moderately rough seas don't bother me unless I'm trying to get from point A to Point B. I'm a bit of a klutz! I took a cruise on Princess and requested a kettle. They found me one. I thought that was pretty nice.

My last cruise on Ventura I had the dreaded Aircon breeze descending on my head when in bed. It's one of the things I look out for now when selecting a ship, thankfully as you say the newer ships locate it more centrally in the room but even on land Aircon can be a real pain. I once had a loud rattling Aircon unit in Thailand, switch it off and it's unbearably hot to sleep, hence my trusty earplugs saved the day once again. Tip: never travel without earplugs (Howard Leight industrial ones are best !!! )
