It's probably mostly kids. I know I buy cheap controllers for my son; he's good at remembering to wash hands before using it, but he's only 5 so he gets excited, runs back and forth to explain things to me and occasionally drops the controller or sits on it. That's why he gets the 15$ Amazon special while I use the pro controller.

What I find fascinating here is some of these controllers are using different analog modules than the others. Some are using analog modules with orange potentiometers, I believe those are from Polyshine Favor Union. The others are using the ALPS analog modules with the green potentiometers, the kind you find in Xbox controllers. I'm curious if they feel different and have different failure rates. I guess we'll find out.

Hmm read the same article, it states that if you play intensive competitive games that requires sharp turns and what not (like in shooters) and moving the stick all over the place, the life expectancy goes down to 400 hours tops and being honest, its a serious thing. A friend of mine when we talked about it, I told him that I didn't understand how the heck he has gone through 3 DS4 controllers, he simply said: "You don't play shooters" This was before the article and I can attest to his diligence in taking care of his things.

@Tronicsfix I just discovered something interesting about the Dualsense controller touchpad, which I though might be helpful in your repairs. I have four Dualsense controllers, and I completely disassembled two of them to custom paint them black. This included removing the touchpad circuit board from the plastic touch pad. I did so carefully and set them to the side. These circuit boards looked exactly like the one in your teardown video, with the orange ribbon cable that is soldered to the board. When I reassembled them, the touchpads didn't work. They were getting power, as the LED light on the circuit board came on, but it didn't recognize swipes or clicks. So I disassembled ANOTHER dualsense to swap in a known good touchpad, and it worked just fine. I also noticed it was different. The ribbon cable was blue and white, and it wasn't soldered to the board. And the chip was smaller on it. But I know all of these are genuine Dualsense controllers straight from Sony. Thought it was just a different variation. Well, in further testing, I went back to my two "bad" touchpads. Decided to exchange them between the two controllers, and guess what? They worked! Apparently, the touchpad with the orange ribbon cable is married to the main board in that controller. It won't work in any other controller. But the touchpad with the white and blue ribbon cable seems universal. Not sure why the difference, but if you run into an issue with touchpads, it's something to keep in mind. And maybe something to test yourself!!

@@shinjid3705 I can see where you're coming from but even with very light use I've had controllers run into issues. I have a blue raspberry ps4 controller I use for my pc and the sticks drift and the charge port got loose. And I barely use it, more often than not it is just sat on my desk. And I'm not even playing games that force you to use the sticks kinda rough. I think I played fallen order the most with it. So it's not just a user error thing.
@shinjid3705

@@AbbyRawks dirt and environment is also an issue. Corrosion can cause electronics to rust and break inside without u even notiticing. I have seen many guides that solved this problem after cleaning the sticks properly. But not everyone is technically advanced so that he or she can easily tear don a controller and do it without braking it .

Potentiometers were okay during 1980s when we had nothing better. Nowadays controllers could be using hall sensors or optical sensors and are really expensive to boot so it's not like they *couldn't* contain better parts due costs.

I'm really interested to see how you'll be able to diagnose and repair the adaptive triggers. Not the triggers themselves, but the part that creates the adaptive tension since that tester can't pick it up. I'm guessing you tested the adaptive trigger tension for #2 in something like Astro's Playroom? Either way I am interested in seeing such a repair if one ever materializes.

That "film" seems like a terrible design. In the retro community a lot of computers have what's called a membrane keyboard which is basically that. And they go bad ALL the time. It's so common that most of the computers that have them now have modern replacement parts that are compatible. It's still a membrane though so it will still fail again.
@Tronicsfix

It's the same as they used on the DS4 and I'm actually surprised how durable it is. It does go bad sometimes but there are other things that are a lot more common.
@nathanmead140

@@Tronicsfix the broken one was green and the one you replaced it with is blue so I think sony has 2 or 3 companies making parts for the controller and some of those parts aren't as good as the same part from the other companies.
@downesg
@downesg 3 жыл бұрын
The membrane is silver loaded ink printed on a substrate which is very cheap and easy to make. Sony has 3 vendors in their supply base that make these for them. The contacts for the button plungers are carbon finish which rub off if you use IPA on it. The terminating end that interfaces with the circuit card assembly can crack and rub off when cleaned. Flexible circuits are never repaired - it is best to replace them outright and never touch the carbon etch with your fingers.
@awilliams1701
@awilliams1701 3 жыл бұрын
@@downesg yeah that's pretty much what happens on old retro computers. To make it worse most of them are fit into a connector that is a really snug fit. Removing them multiple times breaks them. Also if they are flexed enough (IE removing the cover with the keyboard off the machine) they break even if they aren't removed. The C64 design is so much better because it's just a bunch of pin hearders with a proper connector and actual wires. I've never heard of this going bad.
