To make the windows less drafty in winter (and save a lot of money on heating), you can use an old method that is to make additional, removable, inside windows that are just put up in the winter, so you kind of have double glazing but temporarily. I believe you seal them with paper strips that are glued on (like wallpaper glue or just starch basically). Might be something to look in to as an option for winter proofing. 😊

My Norwegian host parents lived in an 18th century farm house that had been renovated according to the original design elements. It looked the part, even at second glance, but it was fully up to modern building codes. Which meant they had these removable windows, but they were draft proof all on their own: the removal was just taking the window off their non-removable frame and storing them in the basement. The seals on the windows kept drafts out. The frames were subtle enough that you just had to hide the hinges with Tactical Curtain Placement if they bothered you. Toasty warm in a -27°C winter, perfectly breezy in a +27°C summer.

I would also suggest velvet drapes. Expensive, I know but maybe you can find some dead stock velvet and make your own. Context: My house is heated by an old floor furnace which is located just past a 40” wide doorway. The front half is full of drafty windows and has no plumbing so we don’t heat it in the winter. I have a double sided velvet curtain on a shower rod that goes into the doorway in the winter and a baby gate at the bottom to make sure it stays away from the furnace grate which is literally only 3” in front of the door. On the coldest winter days the temperature can be more than 40 degrees different from one side of the curtain to the other. That is pretty damn good insulation there! I really understand why velvet drapes were used in drafty Victorian homes.

Painted floors have a ton of historical presence, they may be really authentic to the house and region. Seeing Phil toss you up to work on the ceiling, pro acrobat style - that’s priceless! All in for secret circus content.

I think the term they use in classic cars fits really well here. The term is "resto mod." Meaning you're restoring what you can, and sympathetically modifying parts to bring it to the current century.

Don’t change the floors! The house that I grew up in my parents renovated themselves and was also 125 year old 2 family house. The floors are all that wide floor boarding and painted with a warm brown paint. I believe the wider boards are still rather authentic and kind of more valuable because it’s cheaper to cut smaller pieces of wood. I’m so excited to see what you do with the house. I also think Ariel Basset bought a house sight unseen in Nova Scotia.

In my area, these are called a "double house." The builder/owner lived in the "fancy" side and rented the other side for income and to offset the cost of construction. I totally love your house, and I love you for not replacing the windows! My house is 1908 total rehab, in much much worse shape than yours when we bought it. My dad's Aunt Cora had a double house in Texas. The family lived on one side, and the other side was her commercial laundry business. She had young men dressed in white chef jackets deliver and pick up the customers' laundry on modified bicycles. I believe their mothers were the ones who did the actual washing and ironing.

What an adventure for you!! Back in the mid 80s-the early 90s my Ex and I bought, totally gutted, then remodeled 3 homes. All while living in them during the remodel and raising preschoolers- early grade schoolers. As soon as one was finished we sold it and jumped into the next. So many wonderful memories. TONS of work but so much fun. We stopped when we found our dream house and the kids couldn’t be moved from school to school. I’ve lived through 4 total kitchen renovations, 11 bathrooms, plus all the bedrooms and living space in every house. Each room gutted to the studs. I learned SO MUCH! Hung 100s of rolls of wallpaper, and Sheetrock. Umpteen gallons of paint. And “Held the light” a thousand times. I’m so excited to watch your home adventures. Enjoy every minute of it. The satisfaction lasts a lifetime. I look back at those time with sweet, fond memories and hope the same for you.

My first thought when I saw it was “insulation”. You can buy inner window “storm windows” that connect via magnets to the window frames if you want to keep the originals. This is going to be so fun!

Stunning!! My husband and I lovingly renovated our late 1800s home in Ontario 40 years ago. We found that 90% of the work was on the stuff that you DON'T see--roof, plumbing, electrical, plaster, storm windows, etc. We kept all the original features, including the radiators, hardware, stained glass, fireplaces, and wood mouldings and floors; and discovered that radiant heating was really wonderful! We also noticed that the wood flooring was "fancier" in the 'public' areas of the home, such as front rooms, dining room, and central hall, than in the kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Congratulations!! As someone who has spent the last 4 years fixing up a 1923 Craftsman, I can not wait to see all your work on your new money pit. I love my money pit, but it is, in fact, a money pit. Such a satisfying and frustrating adventure. Yours has really good, beautiful bones. As a potential tip- when we repaired our ceiling, we found that lightweight joint compound worked MUCH better than actual plaster. It set better, it sanded easier, and it was easier to apply. I love what you are doing!! Cannot wait to see more.

We lived in one room for months whilst we renovated. A house and its land gifted by “Lady Henderson” for the Marines and their families. Built on farm land. We replaced much of the wood as it was riddled with woodworm. Discovering many hidden gems! Found a cellar that was full of bricks from when it was built. A row of these houses do, we assumed for every forth house detached in fours, they made callers to use for dumping matériels. So we saved them, sold them so as to use the money in other areas of the house. So I get exactly where you are coming from. A Labour of love. Almost 50 years and still we live in this home and raised seven children within it..💗💗

First - you need a whole series: How Acrobats Renovate a Home. When we knocked down and rebuilt our 1920's house after a fire, we found All Kinds of crazy stuff happening in the walls! Old wood had been recycled to build the walls - one interior wall had a strike plate for a door on it, except there was no framing for the door there, it was just reused! Some of the repurposed wood was coated in matte green paint, so we could easily pick it out through one whole section. Some of it was even used on an exterior wall! There were feed bags used as insulation, and in one small bedroom closet, the shelf above the clothing rod was the side of a crate of some kind. I can't wait to see all the surprises, and treasures your house holds for you, and I am thrilled for this new chapter in your life! Congratulations!

Yea, I can absolutely believe it! So far we haven't found any crazy or obvious repurposing here... no wild framing choices either. Like, the house was surprisingly well-constructed back in the day, but there have definitely been plenty of little treasures we've found in the floors and between joists, so that'll be an entire video one day!

When we decided to repaint the little entryway in our 1830's house I was peeling off th wallpaper and the plaster on the lathe was so crumbly we dicided to replact it all with sheetrock. I began taking out both lath and plaster and found a cavity behind the large fireplace in the kitchen: six feet by two feet wide, a channel for the chimney (s) that simply extended past the second floor to the attic. It stayed like that for a few years because of the pandemic. We decided to removate the kitchen addition, but kept the fireplace. Our mason repaired the fireplace, hearth and chimney and then we got a new mantlepiece around it and there is a liner in the chimney for a woodstove. But still, if this place ever burns (knock on wood) that space will act as a chimney itself.

I did that too. I bought a house in Washington State while living in Kentucky by only seeing photos online. Also never lived anywhere left of the Mississippi. I'm 62 so this is the last major big adventure of my life. I'm sure you'll have many, many more. Enjoy your grand lovely lady!

I have just started watching and I plan to work on some crazy quilt items soon! I am super excited about your new house! I did a travel nursing contract a few years back in Maine. It was on my bucket list to travel to Nova Scotia. Unfortunately it was winter and I couldn't find anyone up for the adventure! So I'm excited to watch you in Nova Scotia! Finally, I'm old enough to be your mom. We bought a house in Indiana in the mid 80s. I worked along side my hubby! Once when I was about 7 months pregnant, I climbed up to 3rd story scaffolding and was painting the intricate detail pieces near the roof. An older neighbor lady came out and yelled at my husband to get me down from there. She wouldn't leave till I came down! Nothing bad happened to me or my now 38 year old daughter😂! Have fun...I spent my early married life renovating houses...I learned so much!

I have some of that in out front door which is why we’ve never replaced it. Instead, I have a lined, velvet curtain over the front door and in the really cold weather, I add a draft dodger. Congratulations on the new (for us) house! When we got our house we didn't change the windows as well, a few year later we did as it was cold and energy costs had gone through the roof. The replacement windows are in looks the same but are a lot more isolating. I really really hope you can keep your windows because they look gorgeous though!

I believe that room downstairs, with the pass through to the kitchen, is called a morning room. It was used for breakfast and to prepare for the day…plan meals, write letters, read the paper and enjoy the sunshine from the windows.❤️🤗🐝

My hubs and I bought a home built in 1886 - our first home. It was a major fixer upper. It had great bones and was gorgeous. we tackled the kitchen, bath & dining room first. We basically lived in those 3 rooms for 5 years while we worked on the rest of the house. We held a housewarming party on the 5th anniversary of buying our house with before photos hung in each room. Greatest experience of our life.

My inlaws brought an abandoned victorian house. The walls and ceilings had been covered with giant daisy wallpaper. Think 69 psychedelic. It took 5 years to renovate, with help from family and friends and them doing most of the work. My husband has plumbing skills, he redid the house's plumbing. A lot of the horsehair plaster was destroyed with the wallpaper removal, so we put up drywall in those areas. My father-in-law is an electrician. He redid the wiring but kept the original 2 button switches. Most the windows had original glass and while they reattached the ropes and weights that helped lift the windows, they left the original windows too. They have so much character. The house was just so beautiful when completed. You're in for a fabulous ride. Have fun... because it IS fun to give an old house new life.

Congratulations! I did some renovations on old homes in Vermont. You will have so much fun. Love the floors, staircase, everything! All you need for the first few years is a kitchen, bath, laundry and place to sleep. The rest will come over the next 5 years.

This is so neat! Your house is so beautiful already with so much character! I'm glad I found you. My husband and I have always had a love for old houses. Old mansions really. We are in our 60's now, but we lived in our 1919 farmhouse for around 40 years and we made improvements on it and our son and his wife live in it now and they're taking the best of care of it! We'll always have a love for older houses!!

My dream house!!! So glad you won't be tearing it down only restoring it like you want too. As a child I dreamed of having a house like this and doing the work to make it our home..Watching yall work on this house will be like watching my dreams come true. My husband and I never got to fulfill our dream. With raising 3 children and all the pressures of jobs,etc. Now we have been married 60 years our children and grandchildren are adults with lives and families of their own our greatgrandchildren are growing up in another era than we. The "bathrooms " mid way up the stairs was probably servent rooms. Close enough to the family to care for children before they woke the owners. Also it kept them from having to heat the servents rooms. Keeping them up higher and most of the time over the kitchen they would stay warmish.. i redone a 200 year old home in 2006. Had a blast learning the history

"Renovating with care" is the perfect description. You're making it into a functioning home, whilst being respectful of the original features and character of the home. You're not doing it up to be a museum. I'm sure it will make a beautiful home.
