@@Supercon57 They drastically changed between 2001 and 2009, not between 2009 and 2017. Upgrade the graphics card from 9800 GTX+ to 1050 Ti and you can play anything. Motherboard, power supply, CPU, RAM - they are not slowing down games that much, only graphic cards changed considerably since that time.

not only would the 5970 be the ultimate from 2009, but that card (and the 5000-series) also still gets driver updates. nvidia have already kicked out the 700-series so no wonder the 9800GTX+/GTS250 is missing support in modern games (same card, just bios)

I am not even sure what to think about this kid referring to 2010 hardware as "classic" and "retro gaming" one thing to consider...how much have the specs really advanced in the past 8-9 years? Moore's law doesn't really apply any longer

Quantum computing... the Google AI "learned" chess for 4 hours, after that they put it on the lowest quantum rig and played 100 games against the best conventional chess program... won 28 times and tied 72. Moore's laws apply in quantum computing, with a giant leap

Unless a cheap and compact way for getting near-absolute zero temperatures arise, quantum computing will never leave the data-center. Moore's law applies to transistor counts, anyway. Quantum computers do not double that fast.

It's definitely not like how computer advancement use to be where everytime the new thing came out the old one was obsolete but still comparing the performance of each part to a typical performance system of modern times is still pretty drastic Those older systems with sata2/3, usb3.0 was barely coming out so not all systems had them .maybe a single port, ddr2, much lower cpu ipc, much higher power consumption across the board, the GPU shown in the video is gddr3, my old 2008 build required a sound card to not lag on bad company 2..sounds cards are all but not needed these days I have actually been revamping my old 2008 build and comparing it to my 2018 build The transfer speeds and system responsiveness with an OS drive that's IDE vs M.2 nvme is absolutely drastic This may be more of a situational case though, comparing my 2013 build to my 2018 build they are not too far off, but my 2008 build to my 2018 build is wildly different

@@thpaladin What does quantum computing have to do with gaming? I have a 5 year old laptop that runs pubg at 90fps 1080p medium settings. If I were to pull out my old 2009 build which is better than the build shown I could probably still run most games 1080p low res 60fps

Ok, since the 9800 GTX+ was the flagship 9xxx series card (excluding dual GPU) and a generation old in 2009, the most accurate comparison would be the 980 Ti/Titan X (Maxwell). I mean if you are going to nitpick.

Not really, the GTX980Ti is on par with a GTX1070. In 2009, the aging 9800GTX+ was the mid range, budget gaming card, and rebranded as the GTS250. So it would compare more to a GTX1050Ti.

That's not anywhere near close to top of the line for 2009, the LGA1366 platform was well and truly out by then, not to mention the 6 core Phenom II chips. And the 9800GTX+ a Titan XP equivalent? What does that make the GTX295 and the HD5970 then?

I miss when I used to own my business and built these machines by hand. I took great care in making sure that every system was built to the highest standards using high quality components. I built over 50 custom units that had Intel Core 2 and AMD Phenom processors. My first build used an Nvidia GeForce 7950 GX2 which had an unprecedented (at the time) 1GB of RAM and one of the first graphics cards to use two GPU processors with separate RAM (which is now commonplace on even low end cards today). The card itself sold for $1100. The processor was the fastest Core 2 Duo you could buy, the E6700 and featured 4 GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and DVD burner, running Windows XP 64-bit edition.

Perfect candidate for something like a GTX 1050 Ti, something able to run newer titles but at the same time not wasting money on something that just wouldn't be used. It's a nice system and I have some experience with something close lol sitting on a shelf behind me is my system from that era and I too used top shelf parts 8GB's of Kingston Hyper X ;) a Core 2 Duo X-Fi Fatal1ty edition sound card. Asus Mobo and a 4870 (I think I upgraded from a 3870 at some point) anyway I put a GTX 980 in it and was surprised at how well it worked. Then I went and built a Skylake system lol My case I was using was a Antec Lanboy (2002 ish..) Really nice case and it had 2 front USB ports :P lol Now I have a nice HAF 912 but its a real dust magnet :( lol If I could go back in time, I would have told myself to hold out a bit longer for Ryzen lol

yeah mine is the original too with no window on the side lol Near mint condition because the desk I use is one of those with the door. I would honestly still be using it but I use my PC as a media server and a gaming machine... so I needed way more hard drives and the GTX 980 would only fit in it if I removed the hard drive cage and left it just laying on the bottom :(

+Krispy +vince Van der Perre You're both wrong, the processor won't bottleneck any GPU that is equivalent to a GTX 1060 or lower in any game because it is more than enough of the required processor speed to keep up with the GPU (which is core 2 duo e8400). Most games won't even see a difference whenether you have something like this or anything like a i7 7700k. The only game were the CPU will show noticeable differences is a game like GTA V but nevertheless the processor will run at playable frame rates (20-30 fps less than a modern i5 or 40-50 less than a modern i7). This isn't that much of a bottleneck considering the fact that compared to other processors it runs the same or a higher speed as a pentium g4400, i3 6100, athlon series, or first/second generation i5 processors in that game anyway, in other games the GPU will really judge the different frame rate.
@kato4792
@kato4792 7 жыл бұрын
+Computexpert That's only in a game like GTA V and most processors slower than an i7-7000k will experience a bottleneck nevertheless. The fact than an 8 year old athlon x4 955 processor (now $20 today) can perform as well as an i3-6100 in gaming shouldn't be considered a bottleneck. A modern i3 or Pentium are considered good budget gaming processors and they average around the same fps in GTA 5 as this processor. Also remember I said only in GTA 5, the processor is more than capable in keeping up with the GPU and it show no difference compared to an i7 in other games at all within the margin of error (only GTA will show noticable differences since it is more CPU intensive).
@kato4792
@kato4792 7 жыл бұрын
+Computexpert I acknowledge that other games that aren't tripe AAA titles can run more CPU intensive like Cities Skylines or Total War but not all of us go much higher than the $350 dollar price range. For example, I own a $170 computer than runs well within my budget yet still runs at good frame rates. The word that I'm trying to put out is that an old processor like this runs as well as a budget processor relative to g4400s or i3-6100s which most people call a budget CPU, and shouldn't be held or undermined to such a lower expectation for it's age. P.S some people don't see i3s as obsolete, in terms of gaming it is a good CPU for gaming not everyone needs to buy an i7 to get fine frame rates, they run above 30s and 40s in more CPU bound titles CPU's like Haswell/Skylake/Kaby Lake i3s/ Pentiums, older Yorkfield Core 2 Quads, older Phenom AMD x4s. Most games CPU bound or not all share the same thing in common, as long as the processor is not lower than a Core 2 Duo e6600, games will wtill be playable.
@kato4792
@kato4792 7 жыл бұрын
+Computeexpert I'm just stating that the older processors such as the Athlon are well past the playable spectrum for more budget oriented build. I never argued nor recommended a pairing as ludicrous as an Athlon with a 980 or higher. My point is that the Athlon x4 955 can run any graphics cards equal to or lower than a GTX 1060 at efficient settings in most builds if that's what you don't understand.

I cannot remember what type of RAM it is but I think it was EDORAM or something like that. It had 100MB of HDD space and it did not come with sound. So for many years, I played games on it without sound. I eventually got Yamaha OPL3-SA sound Card for it and it was a game changer for me lol. The games I played was Doom 2, Wing commander, Cyberia, Duke Nukem 3D, Solitaire, and Mechwarrior.

I upgraded the graphics once around late 2014-early 2015 and the ssd died at some point so I replaced it with something more stable(early ssd were still new and not totally reliable in 2010). Performance still gets me 50-60 fps in modern games in 1440p resolution in high settings instead of ultra. I'm only finally considering making a new build because I'm curious about vr. I would never sell my rig for 75$ I'll give it to a friend to play multiplayer with or keep it set up in another room for when friends come over.

The case for that computer is worth more than $75. At $75 that computer is a steal. Can stick in an SSD, update video card, and be running modern titles pretty easily still. I still have a bunch of old builds around my house and they are all still decent. I still use my original Lian Li rebadge rocketfish full tower case I picked up in 2007 today in my ryzen machine. My Intel machine has my corsair 780T case. A pair of crossfire 6970s (which I had in my system back then) could still run many popular titles today. I even still use my old Thermaltake 850w tough power 80+ cert PSU from back then today.

I spent about 1400 in 2011 for my gaming rig. Was a boss, now I'm rebuilding it.
